"Tides of Ice" a perfect example of Cryptic's coding...

cannydogcannydog Member Posts: 148 Arc User
Ok, for those of you who don't know what "Tides of Ice" is... Its the New Event in this year's Winter Wonderland. And to compel players to participate in this abomination they (Cryptic) have made it so that you have to "complete" it 5-10 times to get the most valued items from the store. Otherwise all you are doing is items that might not even work once the Winter Event is over.

But there's a catch... (Isn't there always one with Cryptic?) Completing this event means "a character must participate from start to finish in all 10 waves of fighting to receive completion credit" but as many of us know by now its NOT that simple!! Personally I've repeatedly shown up early, fought the entire event, helped kill the SNORG Queen, and got no completion credit.

Why? Well it seems that if there are too many players involved it glitches. And you can "Participate", support the team, and all that jazz, but you'll get no credit. However if there are only a few players there... Half the SNORG can escape, you'll spend half the time frozen, you'll experience the pure joy of Cryptic's wonderful tab targeting system , but wonder of wonders you'll get Credit.

And apparently you can just stand near where the SNORG escape and do nothing and you'll get credit. Because that's what lots of players seem to be doing. Which means that bottom line is that this Event is Broken. And the only solution is to transfer to an instance where there are almost no players.

Then you can just go stand around and do nothing. You'll still get the rewards for each wave. You'll still get completion credit. Just don't bother contacting "Support" about this because they are broken too! All you'll get from them is a pat answer...

Those items can be used after Winter event ends.

This will be fixed in tomorrows patch and is already being tested on Tribble: "It is now easier to gain completion credit for participating in “Tide of Ice”."

    Seriously?
with all of the things that are in the game that are NOT fun, you have to complain about something that is fun?
Try using shooter mode if you are having problems with targeting. all you have to do is put your reticule on the target and click.

As damix4 stated, they are fixing it Thursday AND they are making it an Account-wide unlock

Who cares if the leeches want to leech in this? Just change instances. Its not like an STF where the leech actually hurts.

Play it because its fun while it's here. The rewards will come.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys complain about TRIBBLE for the sheer enjoyment of complaining about TRIBBLE.

I joined tides of ice at wave 5 and still appeared to get credit so there may be more needed than just presence. Of course I did run around lots and kill lots of snow-borg-persons.

I say appeared as at the end the rewards box turned up and it said 'completed tide of ice' but never checked if the achievement advanced.

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles

If you watch your accolade for Line in the Snow I think it is, you will see you got no credit. But you will after the patch tomorrow. I don't think they said how far in you can arrive though. But it's better than missing it because you got there at the start of round 2.

If I write a thread or post whining.. er, commenting.. about something I read through the first page in "general issues" first.

If the OP had done this he would have found 2 other threads on the same subject, both containing the information that this issue has been fixed on Tribble and may well be fixed tomorrow (Thursday) in the scheduled maintenance.

He didn't though, so he looks like a child throwing a tantrum.

you dont need to participate from start to finish i have came in late plenty of times and still got credit, as long as i have been there for the end i have got credit but some people see the queen die and leave and then wonder why they did not get gredit but you have to wait for the timer to run down.

there may be a bug that has not effected me but i have played this event over 30 times accross 3 characters and never failed to get credit.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

First time I played I came in midway in the battle, stayed until the status board went off and everyone left (large group = no escapees) and got credit. Second time I played I was there early, played through the whole battle, including the queen, stayed until the status board went off and everyone left (total of 7 players there = 44 escapees) and I got NO credit. This bug apparently is sporadic, hitting on some and not on others (I'm glad for those who missed the bug). As I've heard, tomorrow's patch should fix this. Don't know if I and others will get the lost credit(s) or not, but I would like to hope so. If not, I'm not going to worry about it. The game is fun and enjoyable (though tiring on the fingers).

I've now run Tides exactly 39 credited times, (yes I JUST read they are making the store unlocks account-wide).
I have had several instances where I have not received any rewards, maybe ten in all, meaning 49est. runs.
Frustrating when I get no reward, but the fun we have had there as a fleet(s) has been lacking for a some time, we almost took over an entire instance at one point yesterday. Much fun was had by all.
We didn't get rewards for every run on every thing but for the fun we had I'm not bothered at all.
However I do know that several of my fleetmates will be overjoyed tomorrow when they learn of the acc unlock lol.
The thing with the winter event is the type of area and the type of minigames within them (for me anyway). Somewhere between the time and environmental immersion (ie race just over here for 3 mins, just over here for 3 mins, SNOWBALL FIGHT! kill SNORGS every so often), with a singular focal point has made for so much easy fleet interaction for us.
Whereas (before DR) we used to run PVE/PVP together for a few runs in staggered groups, here we have often run as a fleet in an instance over a whole day. Its been a welcome change and I am very pleased with how its worked out for us as an international community fleet.
Am I sad for the bugs? Yes, but in this instance I know I wouldn't have run this so many times if it were not broken from the beginning, but now I am glad that I did, and I will continue to do so because we have all had so much fun. Fleet group screenshots (forever good memories), teaching new players how to race, and fighting to the (frosty) last in tides has been like a return to a time we've not seen in Delta 1 for a few weeks now.
Sure some see it as a grind, but for me its been very nice. :) A welcome diversion.

The times I've not received credit are the times I wasn't at the tower or a bridge when the event started. So long as I've been there for the start I've gotten credit. I even lost connection and when I came back I still got credit.

I've done Tide of Ice several times and sometimes I was late and didn't start at wave 1, but I got credit anyway when I fought the snorg until the end of wave 10! I saw it at the accolade! ;)
And sometimes I didn't get the credit and nothing showed up at the accolade even though I started from wave 1!

Is there a counter somewhere that lets you know how many times you've been credited? Do I just have to keep track of it? How do I know if I got credit for it? Is it just if I get rewards at the end?

Been kinda fuzzy on it so far.
