Made this to show how i do the race, as i see lots of people complaining that they can't do it/too hard. I've never understood this, as its always been pretty simple to do imo, but whatever!
Thought I'd at-least try and be helpful and i hope this is of use to someone!
EDIT : Turns out i can't paste links. Cheers @js26568
My fleet commander has made a tutorial for the race
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

when something is second hand natural to you after doing it long enough the thought someone else is trying but cant get the hang of it, well you wouldnt understand after knowing how to do it so well. i mean some people have that motor racing speed gene in them to get the job done, naturally it comes with learning, confidence and awareness. learning and awareness people can pick up without much trouble, its confidence in doing something your not used to is the factor, it will always be the factor when it comes to racing of any type. and after that talent comes into play, the person who is willing to look within themselves and their racing style and learn how to adapt to go faster, better and tougher and that breeds experience. basic 101 stuff.
however to those who have trouble, there is only so much one can do by themselves, they have to be guided by someone into the whole thing, i have taught a few people in the real world who to do simulation motorsports, but it was years ago when i was in serious competition before retiring from it seriously. some of these people who i taught were making obvious mistakes that were missed on them for example, driving too fast through turns, not understanding the grip levels, gearing and braking, i mean you cant stand on your brakes heading into a turn, as they would lock up and your going straight into a trainwreck with a barrier and gearing, shifting down too fast can cause the axles to get confused when brakign, your gonna end up getting spun around without traction control to help. there is a lot of things. what i did is sit down with them and have them watch how i do it, then give them the controls and guide them through it.
tutorials on how to do it just dont help, while you can see what others are doing and may get an idea, the only way you will actually figure it is by understanding yourself and learning from it for the most part. going back to racing style, each person has their own points, how they attack a corner, what lines they take and so on, no one person is the same in that way, where you see a tight hairpin turn fo ex. you slow down take it at a steady speed until you feel you can blast out of the turn at speed, others may take a deeper line when braking, do a much more sharper turn and blast out the corner with more speed, it all depends how that person races their lines and style.
i get people want to be helpful with tutorials, but these tutorials dont actually help at all for a person in that point. its like trying to tell a man about something he hasnt experienced with a woman yet from a person who has, in the end you have to find out yourself.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
The video will help some. However just some people isn't good at those types games. Either due to eyesight, speed to work with hands, or eye - hand coordination. Then you have ones working off a not so good computer, or net connections. So that will be a factor as well.
You have to consider all those as well, on how some players just can't do it. Then they feel left out since they can't do it. I understand their view as well. I'm was the one left out seeing the cool story line from my WoW days since I couldn't raid. So I didn't see a lot of the story and get stuff. Just like on this game, I don't do STF. So I'm missing out on lots of fun, gear, and story there as well.

I don't use rolls, and still win. But I also don't sprint all the time, just the straights basically (or at least anything that you can go through with a straight line). Pre-Turning (useful to use the mouse for steering here) works pretty well to get around corners.
Not sure if the roll might be faster- the brief sprint-recover delay makes me worry it's not, but then, you can win with that, so it might be just more that it "feels" slow, but it isn't.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
Sprint, Jump, Let Go*, Land, Turn, Repeat...and why wait for the buzzer?
*When you let go of the controls during the jump, you land without any slide. It forgets your momentum. You go up, you come down, you're not sliding. So you can just turn after landing and start sprinting again. No having to try to roll or anything like that.
I often roll but often its a situation of using the mouse to move the camera so your avatar turns differently. However that being said I can see how there will be people who simply dont have this ability due to any number of circumstances. In this case there is a level of skill and innate ability involved.
That being said I am 50, but I am also female meaning that by sheer genetics my reflexes are going to be faster then a male at 50. It took me about 5 or 6 runs to figure out the "straightest line" and then I added the dodge roll if i found myself going way too wide. (to roll you press the forward key twice in a row quickly). Also use the shift to sprint and use the snowball speed buff just before the race. (the snowballs on the ground in piles give a speed boost but trade a bit of traction however the traction issue is manageable if you use a dodge roll when you go too wide)
anyhow if the photogragh things were tradable friends with extra photographs could help those simply unable to do it but unfortunately they are bind on pickup to the character. IN this case it would be nice if cryptic would let us trade them to others (yes some people will take advantage and sell them for EC but others might stuff them in the fleet bank when they are finished getting the ones they actually need so that others less adept at such things can have a ship too.)

i can do the ship race fairly easily although i do slip up on occasion but then i am fairly old in comparison to most STO players, when i first started i never thought i would get it but luckily you do get infinite repeats so you just need to keep at it.
i only wish there was some way i could help out players who are haveing a hard time or really just cant do it for some reason, i have loads of extra pictures i would gladly give free of charge to help someone out but sadly it is not allowed and would probably be abused if it was.
all i can say is i am 56 years old and my hand eye thingie is not so good and my eye sight is failing a little so i guess if i can do it then 99.9% of other players should be able to do it too if they are determined enough.
differant matter with the pvp race i normally get beaten and end up coming last but providing you finish within 1 minute of 3rd place flag being taken you still get 2 tags so you only need to run 3 times a day to get an epohh to raise plus somtimes im lucky and get a solo or two man race so get extra then, but obviously most players are a lot better then me at it.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Best advice if you find it hard to do the race - practice the track!
It's there in the map 24/7 for you to run on so why not give it a few practice runs.
Once you know exactly where to aim for to line up for straights, what curves can be done full speed, or where to jump/roll to stop it gets a lot easier.
It's easy to do if you use the snow to your advantage. Running over snow slows you down a lot and I use it to my advantage throughout the race. Pair that with occasionally letting off the W key and you can run a fast race without jumping or rolling. It's also very useful to know where you can go off the track - you'll especially notice it at the end of my race.
