Since the update ST.42.20140720a.7, The mechanics of Beam Overload has changed. Beam Overload attacks are now always a Critical Hit. No longer drains Weapon Power.

but the damage multiplier from BO was reduced. Since every shot crits, there is no longer any real edge cases where its to powerful, of pretty much didn't do anything.

The answer is yes its easier to get vaped... and no it has nothing at all to do with overload.
