Some Demorecord questions (video recording tool)

So, I am really eager to begin working on some professional STO videos. As in not me playing stuff, but basically anything that would be better if I would not simply follow my character/ship.

After asking a YouTuber how he did his videos, he replied that he makes them using a tool inside the chat called Demorecord.

I went to the wiki and found this page.

So, I recorded my first samplevideo.

However, my questions. They might feel silly, but I totally am a newb at anything that requires any form of computer knowledge really xD.

1) How do I access the files? The wiki says
To playback your recorded files, run the game from the command line in the directory of GameClient.exe:
which for my limited knowledge is not specific enough. Please explain this like you would to a ten year old?

2) Can I name my file anything I want?

3) The Limitations say I cannot record Foundry missions. Is this still accurate, considering that page has not been updated since 27-Jan-2011?

Whoever answers these gets the one and only Rahm Medal of Approval! (No, it does not exist, but hey, you can at least say you earned it xD)

I can help you out here.

    Let's first address your questions:

    1) How do I access the files?
So, in the STO game launcher, you will see on the top right corner of the window the word "Options". Click it Figure 1

Another window will open up. Scroll down to the bottom of this window and you will see "Command Line"
    Figure 2

In this text box, you type " -demoplay filename.demo "

**filename = the name of the file you specify in game when you start the demorecord. So if you run the command in game as " /demorecord station ", in the command line you type " -demoplay station.demo**

    2) Can I name my file anything I want?
Essentially yes. What I do, to keep things straight in my head, is keep the file name simple, and relevant to what I am shooting. So If I am doing a video of the ESD, then the file name will be ESD or Station.

    3) The Limitations say I cannot record Foundry missions. Is this still accurate, considering that page has not been updated since 27-Jan-2011?
This is some true and false, You can run demorecord in foundry, however, any NPC contacts that is created in the map will not be recorded. Space NPC contacts can be recorded, it just seems to be limited to ground.

I also created a turorial on other commands you can run, and a basic look at Demorecord and how to capture some awesome screenshots

Also, takes a look at this link for more info on how to use demorecord and it's camera paths. It is a bit of a learning curve, but If you stick with it, you'll figure it all out.

Does demorecording work with the /renderscale command? For example, let's say I use /renderscale 3 to record, the same as always I do with my screenshots. When I launch the demo file, will it be in 3x resolution, or will it still be in 1920x1080 mode?
I completed a 2-man CSE, ISE, and KASE, Optionals included. And I soloed Winter Invasion.

You can open up the chat bar in demorecord using the ~ key, then you can use /renderscale within demorecord itself. I believe this works for /setregionfov as well.

    ^ Yeah that.

Do your demorecord at normal renderscale for performance and then set your renderscale from the ~ console while you're playing back the file. :) (although you won't need the forward slash in front of your /commands when using the ~ console)

Lots of these commands should work while playing back:

Obviously any of the ones that cause an action like ordering a boff around won't work since all of the actions are pre-recorded.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

There is quite a decent tool available just to simplify and help manage Demorecord files.

It is called STODemoRecordLauncher and is by Rachel Garret. He's done a lot of work with it and has the ability to perform so basic edits, removing notifications, effects but must importantly for in foundry a way to put player character costumes onto customer. Foundry NPC costumes so that they actually become visit let and customisable-

So that STODemoRecordLauncher program can remove ALL visuals. I'm trying to get some publicity photos for a friend's Foundry missions. I played his mission with /demorecord going the entire way through. But it was mostly useless because all of the buffs, expose, shield rings, and other such HUD stuff were all over everything.

I want this to look as much like a movie as possible, so I can pause at the particularly dramatic moments, and not have HUD garbage in the way of the photos.
