Well if it went to court they would lose, if you like the mission or not.
For sure.
And I do enjoy the mission actually.
I'm just not the sort of person to watch them produce something that is a BLATANT rip off of someone else's work (fun or not) and not call them out on it. While fun, BUG HUNT is a creatively bankrupt, artless piece of stealing something from another IP and not even trying to go the extra step to make it an homage.
Homage is something like Gasko Blues, an obvious take/snarky send up of the Cloud City Scenes from Empire Strikes Back. But it was done artfully, with a sense of snarkiness, and didn't lift elements and dialog DIRECTLY from the source material.
there are little NPCs and lines all through STO this one is nothing special
and some are so obscure no one get them, like the rom episode where you have to rescue the fed taken captive. she gives her serial as 24601.. a rare reference indeed
It's a case of parody. How funny it is? That's subjective.
But you guys would have a stroke with WoW where they have Scooty, Smiles O'Byron, and Jordy Lapforge running transporter pads, along with engineers Trep and Nogg. A character named Lenny McCoy is running around as a combo reference to Leonard McCoy and Lennie Briscoe and Jack McCoy from Law & Order. And a transporter accident can give you a debuff that says "You have been replaced by your evil twin."
I still think it's funny that they have transporter accidents as a feature in a fantasy game and we have no transporter malfunctions, holodeck malfunctions, etc. here.

I guess it just comes down to, after seeing them do homage and parody the right way more than a couple times, seeing something as blatant and unoriginal as BUG HUNT, fun or not, just rubs me the wrong way.
The bug hunt troopers references was one of the few funny things they have done lately. Why complain about what works. Complain about the terrible actual writing in general.
Star Trak steals alot of stuff, but this was a nice shout out. Kinda fun.
Haven't said, it's not fun. Just saying that compared to the homage and parody that the team at Cryptic have done in the past, this mission is artless, and shameless in it's rip off. I still think it's fun to play.
Of note, I am quite settled and calm, enjoying my tea. Also, my name is not Francis

No.
Gasko Blues was what you call an homage.
Bug Hunt is a blatant and artless rip-off of Starship Troopers.

Just my opinion.

Except the bugs in Starship Troopers were a lot better looking and would be more fun to fight I think. LOL
actually, 24601 is jean Valjean's prisoner number from Victor Hugo's Les Miserables.
(only reason Vetteguy knows it is I got him to take me to see the play)
EDIT. you are also correct. the simpsons used it in an episode where Sideshow Bob was featured. it was HIS prisoner number.
Let's not forget he also served on the USS Buenos Aires.
Don't forget Hicks said it in Aliens, which predates Starship Troopers (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't said in Heinlein's book).
Not that it actually matters; I like to see homages.
Yes it is but unfortunately the only new thing added in that whole new expansion I could imagine playing in the long run.
Its also be the only thing added by DR which I consider fun and not something forced upon me and I have to get used to from now on.
