Galaxy map polishing pass

Hi everyone,

Our current Galaxy map just got a facelift with Delta Rising. It does look a lot better, however it still has some 'clunky' features on it. Most notably the Defara and Borg sectors. Game-wise, the travel to these could be smoothed over and made less confusing by doing the following:

By moving the Defara sector down and physically connecting the Borg sector to the rest of the map, travel to them becomes much easier for all factions. In addition, lore-wise this new layout also makes more sense (the Defara sector is close to the Borg area now, which is why they are being attacked by them. Also Captain Kirk didn't have a Transwarp gate to get to Cestus or the Mutara Nebula, so how did he get there in STO terms? :P)

You'll also note that I changed the border colors on a number of sectors to better represent the faction in control of that area (many blocks are half controlled by two factions - like the Eta Eradani sector or the Alpha Centauri sector).

One of the best things about 'correcting' the map as above, is that it allows easy expansion into the Gamma Quadrant from Deep Space Nine, when that content is made available. :)

The reason you can't move the Defara sectors to there is that that isn't where they are in the Galaxy.

The reason you have to use a gateway is because of the distance required and you have to access the Transwarp network. Otherwise they would have to map a huge chunk of the Federation.

It actually was that far for Kirk, they just used Warp Speed Plot

I concur with this. Using a transwarp gate to access a place they were visiting in TOS doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

that star trek map does not meet canon... the one that's slightly interactive.

defera would be above deep space 9, due to the breen border.

The reason I linked the map, was because it is I believe a collection of cannon references and has a calculator for distance on it.

Yes the Federation split in two seems odd, but when you consider the Federation as a Political Entity it makes sense. The Federation has never been about conquering territories, its about planets choosing to join, It's a sprawling entity, to quote memory alpha:
the Federation's territory was spread across 8,000 light years, with a membership of over 150 worlds. (DS9: "Battle Lines"; VOY: "Innocence"; Star Trek: First Contact)

As to the Kirk thing, you are trying to apply logic to the TV show. Yes at TNG warp 8 it would take Kirk around 100 days to get from Earth to the Mutara Nebula but that would be really boring on screen.

If STO were to add the actual distance there would be a lot of empty sector space maps. Though it would be awesome if they made all of it. I think rather than moving things around I would rather they fill in the gaps, add areas like Trill, Betazed etc
