Now, I know it's possible for a fleetless captain to get fleet stuff with a healthy degree of groveling, but I'm hazy on the details. Do I need a standard version of a ship for that? Will I be able to get fleet credits with dilithium, and if so, what would be the ratio? And is such a transaction as beneficial to both parties as it seems to be in my head? I don't want to be a freeloader. Would the dilithium exchanged for fleet credits be payment enough for this favor?
Also, before T6 ships there used to be options that could rival the fleet variants (the Vesta line comes to mind). I take it, I shouldn't count on something like that with tier 6 vessels?
you have to actually join the fleet for ships. you can get the *other* gear without doing that, but not the ships. To get the other gear you still need to be in A fleet so you have access to provisions.
Because of the provision costs to the fleet that is helping you, you may be asked to donate to the cause in some form.
You do not need to buy the standard ship first.
If you buy the standard ship first, you do not need as many fleet modules (from zen store or bought off exchange) AND you can claim the basic ship on multiple characters.
So for example if you want a fleet karfi on 2 characters, you buy the c-store karfi and 2 ship modules. Both can now claim the upgraded karfi for 1 module + fleet credits and provisons. If you bought both characters the ship from the fleet directly, it would cost much more zen unless you just have a billionty EC and bought that many modules off exchange and wrote it off as no big deal.
The bottom line is you have to join a fleet at least long enough to claim the item. Whatever deal you make to get it from there is between you and them. Before you go in, be ready to purchase ... look it up, get the items, earn the fleet credits, etc.
I do not know what you mean by options that rival fleet. A few c-store ships are on par with fleet ships, scimitar for example. The latest lockbox ship is t6, and is on par with the c-store t6 ships (but we have not yet seen the fleet variety of THOSE !!). I don't understand your comment but if you just want a t6 ship the boxed assault cruiser is a fine ship... or wait to see what comes in next box, etc. The old box ships are still as good as old fleet ships. Better: they upgrade for free.
First off, to earn Fleet Credits, you need to be in a fleet and donate to Fleet Projects. If you donate your refined Dilithium, you will earn 1 Fleet Credit for every piece of refined Dilithium you donate.
You will earn more Fleet Credits by donating things like Common level duty officers, Fleet Marks, and some of the higher-end Commodities. They have better Fleet Credit payouts than dilithium does.
Most items you buy from Fleet Starbases, Mines, etc. have a Fleet Credit cost, as well as a Dilithium cost (in most cases). In addition, most items also require Fleet Provisioning in order to purchase them. This is in addition to the actual cost of the item(s) desired. There are many fleets who are more than happy to accept donations from those who are not a member of their fleet.
If you are not in a fleet but need to earn fleet credits, just go into the NOP Public Service (for example) chat channel and offer to donate to a fleet project. Just make sure to state what faction you are.

Ah, that explains why people would want to get a standard T6 despite the fleet ones hiding around the corner. Anyhow, I'm as altless as I am fleetless, so I'd better just wait and see.

What I meant was, when T5 fleet ships were the ultimate endgame ships, you could still get an out-of-fleet Vesta and be more than competitive. Or, at least, that's the impression that stowiki gave me. So I wonder if something like that can happen when T6 fleet ships arrive - a C-store vessel that you don't have to be in a fleet to get and yet is on a par with the T6 fleet ones.

It works the same way as the reputation projects, I take it? Fill the bar, wait a bit, collect the goodies?

But most fleets would rather I used dilithium, what with the current need for it everywhere, right?
And thanks, guys. Now I have a much a better idea of what to beg for when the time comes.
When you donate to a fleet project, you will immediately get the Fleet Credits in return for your donation. No waiting time
And yes, most fleets are in need of dilithium as it is "usually" one of the last parts of a fleet project that get filled. Since dilithium is also used for purchasing fleet -grade gear, it can take a long time for people in a fleet to donate it to fleet projects.

there are other ways to get fleet credit. I think you still need to be in a fleet but you can CHOOSE fleet marks as a reward from several STFs and you can grind the "new and improved" starbase defense etc. You will want to donate; many fleets prevent use of services until you donate X or more in stuff. But you can get the actual marks in small amounts from content to supplement your currency.
there is already one t6 ship in the exchange from lockboxes. I think there is a lobi t6 ship as well. In a week or so there will be a free one from the winter games. These may not be the "ultimate endgame ships" but what does that even mean? Scimitar-T5U is as good as or better than most, if not all, of the current t6 ships.
Point being you can get a t6 endgame ship without a fleet or spending big money. Just be patient and there will be more ships, and more ships, and even more ships...
I highly recommend against buying fleet ships right now. Instead, consider joining a fleet and working your way up in it so you have access to the stores and gear and shipyard, hopefully in time for the fleet t6 ships.
When you donate to a fleet project, you will immediately get the Fleet Credits in return for your donation.
Immediate gratification in STO? Color me surprised
Just be patient and there will be more ships, and more ships, and even more ships...
Roger that, I'm nothing if not patient. Moreover, I lucked out on bonus dilithium from three whole reputations simultaneously, so these days I basically refine, doff, and take it easy. Wouldn't want to burn out, it's been known to happen.
Don't get a fleet ship right now unless you're really in love with that ship-type.
I admit, I kinda like the Olympic class. Love's a she-canine
westmetals, the cost is not a problem. After all, I'm in a much better position than those with multiple characters. Still, how long till I get voodoodolled for bringing a mere T5U into STFs?
