JHAS - still any good?

jawnathinjawnathin Member Posts: 64 Arc User
Hi, been out of the game for a little while. Was thinking of hopping back on and decided to read about the recent updates. It's all pretty confusing but I'm sure it'll make sense once I play.

Anyway I've been sitting on a JHAS box from one of the older ship sales that I hadn't used. I remember this used to be desirable but Im not sure if these newer T6 ships changed that.

Is it still any good? What should I do with it? I don't really care about PvP. Thanks.

I would hold on to it for now as it may still be desireable. So far, the T6 ships are hit n miss, so I'd wait a while on those, too. Find yourself a nice T5 and get the upgrade is my suggestion for now.

I would imagine it is one of the better T5-U ships. It doesn't have any of the interesting abilities that other ships have, but it doesn't need them due to how good of an Escort it is. Also, it is the only way to get JHAS pets on the Dreadnought Carrier.

Between the Hazari, Xindi, and Hirogen lockbox escorts, the T6 escorts, and even the Patrol Escort Refit, the JHAS isn't the undisputed king anymore. Its still solid, but there are good arguments to be made for a number of other ships as well. Personally I'd rather have the money and just fly something else.

Thanks for the replies. I've heard of it being an escort for the Dreadnaught, which I'm open to trying if thats the best way of using it. If it is no longer the Escort of choice I just didn't want to waste it doing that.

I am open to selling it too, but what is the best way to go about it? Through the exchange? One thing I never understood about selling via the exchange is that I could only sell for EC, which doesn't buy me ships. Seems like all the good stuff required Zen or Fleet Credit stuff. How would I go about selling this ship through the exchange and getting something else?

I am totally open to selling the ship, getting something that is as good but more common or 95% as good and having remaining money for gear.

BTW, I hate the fact that all the good stuff has to be acquired through fleet efforts. Investing all my work/dilthium into the fleet stuff and not getting anything is what burnt me out of the game. Anything I can do to avoid that would be great.

True, much cool gear comes from fleet these days but not at all the best throughout the bank.

I have 8 toons/builds and do see a similar pattern for casual PvE for what “best for me is concerned”. Think everybody has to find his best suited mix.

    For me:

    1) Fleetgear:

    - Spire Vulnerability Locater consoles in all Tac slots.
    - Romulan Embassy Tac Boffs with Superior Romulan Operative Trait at every tac station.
    - Elite AMP warp core
    - perhaps a elite fleet shield
    - elite pets

That’s pretty much it for me as far as fleet stuff is concerned. Rest is:

    2) Exchange/Crafting/Drops/Lock box
    - Space weapons! Crit D times X for PvE. Perhaps with some Acc mix for PvP.

    4) Reputation system:
    - Think basically all available Reput-consoles are good for every non tac slot on your ship.
    - Parts of a space set. I usually carry 2 piece sets to boost stats of what I do most.
    - 2 Piece weapons sets. There is a good variety available by now for boost of almost every energy type and/or ship stats.

    5) Lobi/Lock Box (exchange)
    - Consoles and/or other set parts, Plasmonic leech.

And for me, I love the jhas. I know it has gotten some worthy competitors but I think ill stick with mine for some time yet.

The 3 simple things you should know about the JHAS:

    1) It is still a good ship
    2) There are better ones
    3) It is not worth the current cost

Thanks Smokey, I already have it, so the cost isn't as important. Though since its still valuable (I checked the exchange, they are over 400M) that is good for me.

Thanks Peter, I know not everything good is fleet but it seemed like the best ships and gear at the time was fleet. And my fleet didn't really have access to alot of that stuff, so even after grinding over and over and contributing for fleet credits, I never got anything back. But I do remember the reputation stuff being pretty good too.

Anyway, I am open to selling the ship for some EC, then using that on still-good cheaper stuff and having left over money to play around with. Would be of better use than having a ship just sit around in my stash depreciating.

I prefer the Xindi Escort, by far. It gives me better bridge officer setups, and 5 DHCs in front means I can carve my way through anything.

The JHAS was once the most sought after iconic escort and broken OP as hell

Currently it is not the most powerful, but still quite up there, especially after upgrading it to t5-u

I think it's more for purists who love DS9 and the Jem'Hadar to keep around

And they are still awesome pets if you have a Jem Dreadnought

I have 8 toons spread amongst the factions , and have had a JHAS for over 2 years as I got lucky on a lock box way back when the JHAS were very rare.
To this day it is still the best all around ship T5U and from what I have seen and played, better than the T6 ships. The T6 ships only has 2 "perks" you can slot a an intel officer, usually stuck at Lt. grade so you can only use 2 intel abilities. And the 1 extra ship trait ability that goes with you when you go back to your fav T5U ship.
Fleet upgraded (you get 11 consoles slots) which is also account wide on that particular ship, I myself would rather have the extra console slot versus the intel boff ability. T6 ships only have 10 console slots.
But back to the JHAS, it still has 1 of the best consoles slot configurations in game, 4 eng, 2sci, 5 tact. The other thing the bug has over other ships is the Boff set-up, the combo of consoles slots and boff abilities is what makes this such an outstanding ship.
Of course the right build helps a lot and don't forget very important the doffs, duty officer's you choose to further enhance the abilities of the ship can make all the difference. There are a few ships out there, that I would say are competitive, (hirogen escort), but my preference will be the JHAS. Open the box and play the ship, you won't be disappointed. As for gear, etc.. you do need a fleet if for no other reason to get that 6th space duty officer slot, and of course Romulan boffs with superior operative trait.
Even better create a toon from the ground up as I did just for the ship. I would suggest, Romulan Alien , Klingon faction aligned, (wish Romulan had been a playable faction when I got the ship). This would give you a toon with all the best features, traits and boffs to fully take advantage of the bug ship's abilities.
    That's my 2 cents ;)

The only reason I want a JHAS is for the JHDC carrier pets. It's ridiculous that you need it for them.

There's no way I'm dropping 400mil just for the privilege of then spending 200k fleet credits and 90k dilithium for the pets.

They really should remove the requirement of owning the JHAS to be able to buy the pets. It makes no sense. There's no Romulan Drone Ship-Ship that needs to be acquired first in order to get the Drone Ship pets, which are roughly the equivelant of the attack ship pets.

Yes its good. But there alot of other ships now with the same console set ups which are cheaper.

So its really just the skin.

I would sell it for the max on the exchange.... 1 BILLION DOLLARS! (Its not but you know, when were you can... you do).

Thanks all, I really appreciate the replies.

One thing I like about having a JHAS is that I have a pretty good ship without needing my fleet (my fleet has been around for about a year and we're just at shipyard 2 :P).

Sorry for the noob question, but how do I get a decent ship using EC I would get from selling the JHAS? I thought all the good stuff needed Zen or Fleet Marks/Credits/Modules/etc. I've been on a multi-year journey watching all of the series and I'm currently on DS9, so I like the idea of a JHAS or a Defiant-like ship. I think I want to do something with a dual cannon setup.

So with that in mind, I think I would like to try the Fleet Tactical Escort Retrofit. I see it needs Fleet Credits and Marks. I have the credits, but for the marks do I need to join a fleet that can assign them out? Any way to use the EC to help get this ship? Sorry for the basic questions, I never got any ships beyond what they give you for leveling up. I joined a fleet to try to get more ships but I never got anything from it, so I'm a bit lost when it comes to getting newer stuff.

Ok, loaded up the game and tried to figure it out. The Fleet Tactical Escort Retrofit requires a Tier 3 shipyard, our fleet only has Tier 2.

I realize I can buy the Fleet Ship Modules (I mistakenly called them Marks earlier) on the exchange using EC which I can get from selling the JHAS. Each Fleet Ship Module was around 9M, so I can get many of those for what I can sell a JHAS for.

Anyway, I can't get the Fleet Tactical Escort since we don't have the Tier3 shipyard. But I did see that there is a Fleet Patrol Escort Retrofit. It comes with free tail cannon. How is that ship?

I realized my main toon in an Engineer. Maybe he is better off in a cruiser.

To the OP, its pretty easy to sell your attack ship for a suitable replacement on the exchange, though it will only be lockbox or lobi in source (they are unbound and available for trade).
For the 400 mil you could make selling your bugship you could easily buy the Hirogen Hunter Heavy Escort, AND the Xindi Contortrix Escort.
They are both great ships that easily match the bugship in terms of performance.
Just search for them by name on the exchange to buy them with the EC you earn from selling your bugship.
However as others have said, if you ever want to own the bugship pets for the Jem'Hadar dreadnought *drools*, then you will need to keep it to have the option to buy them

Did some research on the Patrol Escort, it seems to have a positive reputation and I can actually get it if I get the Fleet Modules.

    How does this sound?

Sell the JHAS for 400~M. Buy 5 Fleet Modules for 9M each = 45M

Buy the Fleet Patrol Escort Refit and have 350~M left over for some decent gear on the exchange? Probably won't spend all of it, but I'm sure I can get some decent stuff.

Thanks, I will look into the Xindi and Hirogen Hunter ships. The Dreadnought + JHAS escort combo sounds like a really fun play style, but I think in order for me to get there, I have to put in more money and effort that I'm not sure I'm willing to invest...

FWIW, I mostly do the PVE and the Reputation missions.

Sorry for the multiple posts. Just typing up what I research The Xindi ship looks pretty cool and has 5 forward facing weapons. Must be an awesome Dual Heavy Cannon ship!!

Is this a good ship for an engineer or should I get a tactical captain?

The free upgrade to the T5U is another benefit over the Patrol Ship I was discussing earlier.

If you like the hit and run fast paced style of play I would go with that ship, I am after it at the moment myself. I have the Hunter, Kumari, tac escort retrofit, all the BoP's, Fleet Patrol Ship, Phantom, The s'golth, and the Mat'Ha, not an escort but yeah... with the Kumari and Mat'Ha being my current favourites, that Xindi escort would make a nice addition.
You could run it on an engineer if you find it fun of course, however personally I would use a tactical captain and hit like the hammer of Thor :D

Thanks, I looked on the exchange and I couldn't find the Xindi Escort available. Other than using Lobi (which I have to buy with money?) is there another way of getting it?

Tactical Captain would be more powerful for sure. Engineer would help with durability and/or maintaining power?

Ok, another idea. If I keep the JHAS and somehow get the Dreadnought Carrier, I can fly both? I'll have both an Escort and a Carrier...

Was doing the math, not sure how I can get a JHDC. I admit I think that sounds the most fun way to play, I get the best of both worlds, carrier and escort. I also get to play something that matches the show I'm currently watching (DS9) and they all look pretty cool.

But getting one doesn't sound reasonable unless I want to spend money. I really don't want to. Not sure how I'll get the 800 Lobi or 100M required unless I sell the JHAS, then it wouldn't be worth it.

If I sold the JHAS, I found the Xindi escort for 95M. Not cheap either but does come with a free upgrade to T5U.

I think I may be better off buying something pretty good for less, keep the EC, buy some decent gear, and see what happens with the T6s and Fleet T6s. I'll have money to upgrade ships and gear again down the line.

A Fleet Patrol Escort Retrofit will cost me about 45M vs the Xindi Escort for 95M. Is the Xindi worth it? Seems like a better ship but 2x the cost.

Any other ships I should be thinking of?
