I was in the U.S. Navy. Here is who they have on the bridge of ships:
Helmsmen crew by a Boatswnmate he/she stears the ship
Lehelmsmen crewed by the above he/she controls the speed of the ship
Quartermastes guid the ship and make sure they are on course
Officer of the deck (OOD) is a SR officer responsible for the ship while under her watch. this station is a Lt commander to commander a Lt on smaller ships
Jr. Officer of the deck is a ens. to Lt rnk position on the bridge. helper of the OOD
the captain is there is always there if it a carrier during flight ops
the Navigation officer need not be on the bridge all the time just during special manuvers
the xo only on the bridge for special manuvers as well
I hope this help out what RL boff do in the navy, and a lot of the boff are enlisted on the bridge
please excuse my spelling. it not the best in the world
The Nav does need to be on the bridge. On carriers the CO and Nav have chairs on the bridge. When an incident happens two questions are asked...where was the CO and where was the Nav. On carriers the Nav is a senior officer that qualifies OODs and makes the watch schedule.
Your pain runs deep.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.

I was a QM...I was on an aircraft carrier and later on a minesweeper

While a starship may be able to be programmed to follow a predefined course, you would still need a navigator to make sure you're on that course. Over a span of lightyears, it wouldn't take much of a deviation from course to make you miss the entire star system you're headed toward.
Can anyone pull up that Robot Chicken video that featured the Enterprise D's nightshift officers?
*sings* "I like Gammera! He's so neat!!! He is full of turtle meat!!!"
"Hah! You are doomed! You're only armed with that pathetic excuse for a musical instrument!!!" *the Savage Beast moments before Lonnehart the Bard used music to soothe him... then beat him to death with his Fat Lute*
I'm going to post it for the ease of others, but if you can't manage to put 'Enterprise D night crew' into YouTube like I did and click the very first result, you need to reconsider this whole internet thing.
