Been a lifetime sub here since the day it was introduced, and will use that sub until the day the servers go cold and dark; but at the end of the day STO has only satisfied my desire for casual space combat, as it falls short on everything else a space MMO should be...... Eve on the other hand hit the mark on pretty much everything else. it's a rough life having to play two games to get everything, but it is what it is.
Eve released a new trailer today, showcasing the thing that makes it such a good game - players, playing the game.

I liked EVE and would probably still play it if I had a better PC/graphics card and a desire for PVP
EDIT - the RnK videos are some of the best to watch and 'pipebombing' is a brilliant idea.
After dying five times and having to start over each time... I gave up.
Obviously, not my cup-of-tea, but it looks fantastic.

Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
there was a thread earlier in the year about 2 fleets going to war with everything on eve, apparently a lot of money and time went into those virtual ships. i think it was a russian guild winning control over some station, cant remember what it was exactly, but ccp were the only winners in that fight :P.

It has many features I really like in a game. The sandbox, the community, the rich universe. I even like the fact that death actually has a penalty, and that thinking for yourself is rewarded. The combat looks...OK, very rock, paper scissors but from what I understand manual flight control is in the works.
That trailer though, it is fantastic. A great representation of what EVE actually is. It really makes me want to play myself. I know Bombers Bar doesn't exist anymore but damn, I'd have loved to be part of that!
Their next expansion is suposed to bring many QoL improvements like better UI and manual control of your starships in order to start bringing the game on a level to compete with the new space sci-fi MMOs that are comming soon and I'm eager to see if these improvements can "capture" me again.
the antics of the bombers bar isn't anything different then what our alliances bomber fleets do on normal days (but then we get to also join up in 1,000+ player battles for control of our systems), they just stayed a part of npc corps so they couldn't get set to low standings and always appeared neutral.
the stealth bomber was the first ship i trained for and was flying in those big battles and scoring kills in my first month..I know our alliance will give you a training schedule for your skills, and hold classes on how to fly with the group; several others do as well - After that I was able to train up the P.I., manufacturing, and gas harvesting skills that now pay for my ships and stuff.

While a wonderfully beautiful trailer, it is a trap that doesn't showcase the sociopathic and sadomasochistic attitude of it's community and developers that one would be required to adopt in order to survive and thrive in the game.
You have to be at least Charles Manson levels of crazy just to reach the endgame.

Not only are the speakers calm and collected (although heavy potty-mouths), it also shows what high-end combat can be like. "Action" doesn't happen until after the 10 minute mark though ...
And reading of Eve Dramas is also a kind of guilty pleasure. If you manage to pretend best friend for X years to somebody in Eve just to drive a virtual dagger in his back & steal all his fleets virtual assets you are a hero in the community.
Playing it actually was a boring experience. Either very repetitive PvE in high-med sec or constant avoiding to get ganked by the PvP heads. Also the bigger the ships gets the more PvP specialized they are. From time to time I get the urge to take my Hyperion out of the garage and for a spin around the base... but then again... naaaa; not dropping bucks into it for that.
Please elaborate?
Yeah that makes sense.
I guess the selling point for me was that crazy FC really getting into it. I did a little reading up on BB and watched an interview with that Jonnypew YT'er. I like that they accepted pilots from all backgrounds, just group up and go blow something up.
Alliance fights mean sov warfare. I know enough to avoid sov warfare :P
I have to ask now though, which alliance are you a part of?

I think it had something to do with a guy from one of the biggest fleets forgetting to "pay the rent" for his fleets region meaning the region was suddenly up for grabs to be attacked by everyone meaning a whole ****storm of a PVP space war happened, the fleets lost tons of the most expensive and time consuming ships to get. or im remembering a different fight.

You live there and log back into Real life every here and then...
Some guys there are just crazy. I remember some guys doing a roadtrip to some enemy alliance members to cut their internetconnection so they werent able to show up on the fight.
Some serious **** is going on in this game.

Things that I didn't like were the missions. no matter where you went the missions were all the same everywhere, varying in maybe the type of enemy. They only have a fixed set of missions.
I also didn't like the fact you couldn't "fly" the ship like you do in STO. someone mentioned that there are reports that might change sometime, but don't know.
It was difficult to figure out how to do things too... but maybe I'm just dense. lol.
getting into the big Sov warfare fights have been some of my best times in any game. it's a great feeling to be a part of such a huge (unscripted) operation when they go right, and I had alot of help getting there. I'll be the first to say I know little about most of how fittings work, but they had a doctrine for me to train into to get into the bomber wings of these big battles quickly and at min cost.
My main is in a Provi block alliance. We are NRDS (not red don't shoot), and have several fleets patrolling for known pirates with an active intel network, so we're very neut friendly and in some senses a safer area then most of high sec. You may have heard of us, we've made a few headlines recently. http://www.themittani.com/features/hero-vs-provibloc-retrospective?page=0%2C0
I was part of several bombing fleets during the war starting at the battle of ZQ..... but I mainly fly Prospects into hostile territory and harvest gas to use in booster drug manufacturing back home. I also do planetary interaction, mining, and ice harvesting; for my manufacturing repair paste, ammo, combat boosters, and other stuff which brings in about 150 mil isk/week - enough to keep all my alts funded.
. I also have an alt in a once a week faction warfare corp for just fun frig fights, and just recently moved my third alt into a class 4 worm hole with a couple of my FW buddies... once we're fully set up in there, we calculate from our tests that we'll be pulling in about 200 mil per 15 min extraction.
pretty sure you're thinking of B-R5RB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodbath_of_B-R5RB
yeah, that's why I play both. STO doesn't go deep very well, and eve doesn't go casual very well. my time splits depending on my mood, each has a place in my heart.

Not sure if this includes losing any real money you put into it but I believe that is indeed the case.
Now combine that with the ePeen squad of PvPers here - no thanks!
that's only a problem if you try to bling out your ship like people do here, if you fly what you can afford you don't mind the losses, because the wins make up for it.

Solo in EVE is a very long, reasonable treacherous and slow moving progress. Joining a corp makes it all smoother ... Depending on the corp.
