I remember reading somewhere that the Enterprise ship was originally meant to have the saucer section and nacelles BELOW the secondary hull. At some point (I'm not sure how this came about) someone either turned it upside down and decided that it looked better that way, or it was accidentally submitted upside down. In any case, it looks like this is why all the ships named Enterprise share this configuration.
I do know that the USS Reliant sketch was submitted upside down and it was decided that it looked better that way.
What do you all think of this? And ever wonder if the dev team at Cryptic ever turned their ship designs upside down in hopes of lightning striking a third time?

I'm wondering why we've not really had designs where the disc is sideways. It might look a bit silly at first, especially for a full-circle, but use a "disc" more pointed like Prometheus-class, and you'll have something looking like the point of a spear. The nacelles would need to be up, below, or back far enough to "see" one another, though. That is, if we're to keep with original design rules. Maybe an X-wing pattern of 4 nacelles and a spearhead.

I'm afraid I do not quite understand what you're trying to say here.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
Originally the saucer was placed that way to minimize the side profile to limit the attackable surface while broadsiding an oponent. Turning the saucer the way you suggest goes against the established standard and would make a ship more vulnerable.
When Matt Jefferies first presented his design concepts to Roddenberry for the Original Series, they were in a pile mixed together.
Jefferies had designed the ship with the nacelles pointing down, but Roddenberry looked at the drawing upside down and thought it looked better even though Matt had pointed out that the paper was upside down.

The original design of the D'Deridex was vertically oriented so that the nacelles were top and bottom, with the 'hawkhead' as it is now (maybe a bit broader). But it was approved with a note for wings to be horizontal.
On the Miranda Class, with the nacelles up top it does look quite cute, but not as differentiated from the Constitution Class. Pity it didn't make it as a Class of its own though, like when the Enterprise-D was in that timeloop and found out it was Frasier Crane contantly grating against them.

Hmm... and here I thought when the design was submitted, it was accidentally submitted upside down. And the producers liked it that way so much that it made it into the movie that way.
Hmm... *thinks of asking Cryptic to add a Sunfish themed starship to the Risian ship lines for next year...*

As far as I'm aware it was submitted upside-down; that's just a piece of fan art by someone with way too much talent

Read here for a bit of the history of the design concepts...

I guess that means ships like the one in this video would be more vulnerable to damage in combat...
