I am a very causal player and am having fun playing the various missions. I do fine by myself and even have completed some pve ques on normal with no problem.
My question is should I go ahead and attempt the mirror event and other pve ques or do they frown upon those that do not have the latest and greatest gear in normal mode?
On normal its fine, though a group from a channel like PublicEliteSTF makes it far less of a chore than pugs. Just remember that closing rifts is the priority, while powering up the base defenses are more of a bonus (too many people think the base defenses will win for them).
You should -- it is free dil if you complete it along with a toy. Also, you can't do any worse than the 20% or so of players who just sit there and do not play. You might die but so what? You might also have fun.
Normal's very doable. If you try it and have trouble killing enemies, post your build and I'm sure you'll get some good advice (but if someone suggests rep/fleet gear, ignore them, you don't need it yet, don't make the mistake of thinking better gear will fix everything).
That shotgun should be very fun for ground STFs, but the choice of rep marks is worth the time investment alone for a new player.
Better gear does not always mean a better player. It is not a requirement, despite what some posts and threads around here would have one believe. What better gear does is this: it allows you to do something really stupid once and get away with it. It also makes the game a little more enjoyable to play. One of the reasons we play STO is we get to be the hero. And the hero always has something a little more special than the regular guys. Who doesn't like that?
You have made it to 50, Congratz! More than good enough to Pug the Mirror Event. However, the Mirror Event and all the rest of the STFs are much more fun when played with friends. Join a Fleet if you haven't already or team up with people you know who play the game. Makes a good time more fun. Nothing at all wrong with playing alone. As long as you don't do it all of the time.
Last piece of advice I can give: If you are having a good time playing STO and look forward to having a good time the next time you play, you are playing the game correctly for the correct result.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
It's all but unfailable, and even if the team is bad you will still end up with some marks and the daily rewards.
You should place priority on closing rifts. If someone is fighting a group near a rift, close the rift before you fight the ships that are there if possible. If you end up getting aggro then you may have to fight, but try closing those rifts.
After that, repair the relays and get the station defenses up.
Fighting the mirror ships is all well and good, but it isn't the objective. You gain more marks by closing rifts and upgrading station defense than you lose if the station health drops, and blowing up ships is worth no marks at all, just random drops, few of which will be better than green.
So rifts, relays, ships, in that order.
After the dreadnght appears, focus on closing rifts and destroying the non-dreadnought ships. Save the dreadnought until all of the rifts are closed, or it will end up just warping out and respawning through an open rift, making it harder to get the time bonus marks. You'll see when you get there.
That being said, don't expect the rest of your team to follow through on that. If they do, great, but it seems that too many people think that they need to blow up every ship before closing rifts, or that they can come by and activate the relay while you are fighting a rift group, but don't give a thought to closing the rift and just fly off to the next relay leaving you high and dry.
But hey, if you blow up just respawn and get back in there.
Thank you all very much for taking the time to reply. This thread reminds me of the first days of STO and how helpful you all were and still are.
I am going to try the event and do not laugh too hard if you come across me and I accidentally set off my fireworks when I am supposed to be closing a rift.

Good stuff! Please let us know how you got on.:) Honestly, I've read the horror stories (which I'm sure are true) but I've pugged it on Normal every day but one, and sometimes several times in a day just for fun; and only had one one bad run out of all of 'em.
[Four dudes in top end ships decided that all that closing rifts and switching generators on malarkey wasn't for them, so camped by the station... problem being that their combined firepower didn't seem to be able to take out Mirandas.... I always keep Chat off, but they were no doubt going, 'Tsssk, look at that newb there doing it wrong, zipping about all over the place like a blue-arsed fly!.. you always get one....']
It seems to be balanced such that a single good build/captain can keep half the map clear on his/her own; so all you really need is two such goodly folks, on opposite sides of the map, and everything else is just a bonus (similar to FFA). IME there's nearly always at least two such good folks [me being one of 'em:D], so it's all good.
So, it seems appropriate to hijack this thread a bit to ask which space based PvE que would be best to replace the Mirror Invasion once it's gone? I'm a hateful misanthrope who wants to run a que that's almost as foolproof as Mirror Invasion while I hunt down people I know.

Ideally (but it seldom actually works out this way) running around blowing up all the ships works because you leave unguarded rifts behind you for the science guy. If there is one, and if he is closing rifts.

I'm partial to the Crystaline Entity for PUGging. Unlike other queues that require teamwork to maximize the rewards this is all about pew-pewing one main objective. Probably the most grief or sabotage proof queued mission there is. Not that griefing is all that rampant in STO, but it's not as rare as I would like it to be.

Yes (and no).

It might distract and aggro your team mates.:)
