Having a look at today's maintenance announcement, and release notes, I noticed something that makes me go 'hmmm....'
The release notes thread, as usual, is not open for players to comment upon. Usually that was done in the sceduled maintenance thread. THAT, however, was locked right after posting.
Now, I know that often a lot of the comments were... let's say less than constructive. But I do wonder if this means that Cryptic is going to ban us from discussing the weekly release notes. After all, sometimes comments about bugs are never really acknowledged by the devs. Take the tray issue... I mean, YAY for a fix (here's hoping it's actually going to fix it), but that was never -really- acknowledged. Sure there was a thread asking for more examples, but it was never listed as a known issue, in all the months the bug has been around.
Sometimes things were discussed in the maintenance thread that, though valid, didn't quite fit into any other section or thread. Do we now think that that'll just go away? Or is this just a temporary thing that's part of the forum overhaul Cryptic is planning?
I'd like to get some input from other players, and devs.
I think maybe they would rather have general discussion here vs. in their marketing/Galactic news section of the forums. If it is a bug they would rather have it reported in the appropriate bug thread. As for feedback I think they would rather see that placed in one of the many feedback threads recently created by the devs.
Most comments I ever see on these threads have to do with b*tching about the changes which belong in feedback threads. I also see questions about why xyz bug wasn't addressed or not posted in the known issues and these should be put in the bug forums.

I think they just want the discussion out here, not in their Release Notes thread, or in the other dev-started thread. I don't think they'll mind discussion in here, as long as it doesn't get into the stupid zone.
Quite an odd decision considering those patch notes are actually a pretty strong and very welcomed attempt to fix the mess STO has been the last few weeks.
If I want a bug to get attention the best place to put it would be the bug forums so that Crypticfrost can get it on the list. The developers follow many of the threads in the various sub-forums for the portion of the game they work on. Right now the lead producers have created specific feedback threads for the hot button issues that the big bosses and players are watching.
All I would say is if you want your issue to be taken seriously place it in the right place so the person who actually handles that issue can see it.

Don't be ridicoulus. There's plenty of room for your rants and nagging in this subforum. This has nothing to do with banning discussion on weekly maintenance.
As I understand it the maintenance threads are always locked until the server goes down, and then it becomes unlocked for discussion until the server comes back up.
It seems like someone isn't in the office yet this morning or just forgot to unlock it. I think we shouldn't read too far into this.

Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.

I'm willing to believe that explanation for now.
if it's really censorship, I would not like that. Now, appointing that new guy, to communicate with us some more, THAT was a step in the right direction.

This is right. The announcement thread would not be locked until after the server goes back online. This is the first time I've seen it locked from the beginning.
Now a LTS and loving it.

Let me break this down to you, weekly maintenece thread is composed of:
40% Bacon posts
20% Overlord Ba'al posts
15% Sth. is not fixed, Cryptic suxx0rz posts
10% Bickering between random 2 people
5% Worshiping Trendy
5% Genuine trolling
5% Serious and relevant replies
Now, in the new format at least the people that have something improtant to report as feedback are directed to relevant sections of the forums where their replies will matter more than being interrupted by miscellaneous types of bacon or how cool Ba'al was.
Seriously, if you want to discuss bacon just make a thread in Ten Forward and knock yourselves out, you don't need the weekly maintenence thread for that.
Along that of not being able to comment about the Release Notes I've noticed that...
Joystick and Controller Support still hasn't been either fixed or even acknowledged
only reliable fix is a programmable controller. i have used same one for 3 yers now and its never failed to work. just take the games key map and program the actions you want to the controller how you like and be done with it .
hell i didn't even know they still made or sold controllers these days that were not programmable for the pc.
and thinking about it my son uses the same controller from his PS3 to play this game in space. all he did was remap the keys in the game assigning them to the game controller basically the exact bass ackwards thing i do with my programmable controller.
Trophies for killing FEDS ahh those were the days.

If they do that then it is simple, someone opens a free forum and people can voice their concerns there in open format, and the Devs and GM's can be sent well formed complaints and voiced opinions on a weekly basis by the administrators of that forum.

Indeed...give the masses no place to vent their ire, it gets diffused and so can be ignored
