Post DR I have barely touched my KDF toon and his Fleet Varanus -- just running it in MI the past few days my ship and its setup are underwhelming. The setup was never really optimized as my KDF guy is relatively new, lacking good DOFFs and all of my space gear would benefit from getting run through the upgrade system. But again I am not feeling the love for it ATM.
So I am tossing an idea out for a cheap sci oriented (meaning CC/exotic damage) build. The goal is to have the ship itself be able to bring decent damage to the table along with doing useful CC stuff (and the exotic dmg that comes with it). The ship will be a Mirror Somraw (assuming they are cheapish) knowing full well it cannot get the T5U treatment -- basically this is a holding pen until something T6 for zen comes out on the KDF side. Again a rough outline below.

The Mirror Somraw is indeed a nice layout. Too bad it doesn't get an upgrade. There are precious few ships that have a tactical leaning but still allow that much sci ability. My KDF sci used it for a while. I still have it and still like it (and beat NWS with it) but I've moved on to a few other things since then. I play around and experiment, so don't take that to mean the Mirror Somraw was undesirable.
I could also suggest the Lvl40 Hegh'Ta or Mirror Ki'Tang (though this has even LESS hull than the Hegh'Ta) or the Breen Plesh Brek Raider for the universal seating setups. You can take any of those LtCDR seats for a sci and run grav well and TBR along with something else (ST, HE, PHP, whatever) still have flexibility to do some damage.
I could also suggest the Mirror Negh'Var (though it is pricey because it's good) for a good battlecruiser.
Ultimately, a Fleet Kamarag is what I'd like but my fleet is not to that level yet.
All in all yah looks like a great aoe killer. Breen Raider is even better by the way. You can use two each torpedo and cannon aoe's, Doff the DCE/Aux2ID/Conn and there's your power boosts and immune to tractors. And of course you get one GW. Splendid ship.
I have a grand old time using my Fleet Varanus doing pretty much the same thing, just with two torpedo spreads only.
Peace.
It strikes me this is essentially a DSD in tactical mode in terms of BOff seating, so that could be an alternative platform if you want to take the build to T5U. I can see it being a loong wait for a T6 KDF Sci.
On that note, I've been wondering if a similar build could work on the T6 Hazari Escort; it is (relatively!) cheap on the exchange at 100M EC. Granted you would be limited to LtC/Ens sci but there are also two Intel slots to play with for added CC / Debuff fun.
I'll def look into the doffs as well.
*IF* you're going to run Gravitorp and Torp Spread, I would say go TS3. Just do it, and enjoy the awesomeness.
That would change your setup more to: TT1 / CSV1 / TS3 / APO3 and an additional TT1 or TS1 for your ensign seat.
I might suggest you swap out your TR for a TBR. If used carefully (and responsibly) it has far more utility and also does decent damage. This is personal choice, really, but I find TR to be anemic and not overly useful, especially if you're already running GW1. Just run a deflector doff and an aftershock doff and whatever you can to minimize cooldown time and maximize uptime.

I put the sci in the commander slot with sci-team, HE2, TR and GW3
I then put the tac in the lt cmdr and lt spot
TT1, CRf1,torp spreed 3
HY1 and CSV
I love the ability to do the sci stuff and still remain cloaked ( yes I just PVE )
I run 3 Dual heavy cannons up front (disruptor flavors) and the enhanced bio torp
I run 2 turrets in back but going to get the heavy turret from the Command rep soon
one of these days will get off my lazy butt and actually post it to the academy
