Why can I not teach subsystem targetting and some other skills?

Hi all

I'm a level 55 Science Captain, Rulan Fed-Aligned. I've switched to a beam boat and want to train my Officers in some Lt. Commander and Commander rank skills that'll help with that (Beam overload, Fire-at-Will and such like). When I go to an Officer trainer, I have some very limited options. For Commander Level, I seem to be only able to train up one skill (attack Pattern Omega) and for Lt. Commander, there's a few attack patterns and some crummy mine-modifying skills. Same goes for Torpedoes; no Commander or Lt Commander Rank trop skill either, even though I have level six for energy weapons and torps and it states I can teach, say 'beam array level 3'. If I go to my inventory to teach skills, I have just two lists of science skills (not subsystem targetting) and that's it.

I don't get why I can't teach sub-system targetting OR higher level beam and torpedo skills. Does anyone have any advice on how to sort this? Thanks.

If you read again, captain-trainable skills are career limited. Sounds like you're a science captain based on what you have available. Other than that, you're limited to bridge officer candidates (Caitian, Aenar, and some other exotoic boffs often have skills normally taught by captains) or finding another captain to train them for you (must be done in face-to-face trade, and you have to remove all their equipment before trading).

Edit: You don't need the lower level skill, each level of a skill is entire separate.

Your not doing anything wrong.. there is a bug effecting romulan captains from training Boffs as well as Xindi boffs not being able to be trained there is a report in the bug forum and Crytic is aware of the issue.. though you may want to go ahead and report it on that thread just to add more voices to the problem.

    @ OP

Do this in game...hit U, at the top of the new window that comes up click on Skills. When you click one of the cells in the Skill Tree a skill details window will pop up.

Ok now left click on Starship Attack Patterns which is in the tier 1/Lieutenant column. Notice how in the skills detail window it says Tactical Captains who learn 6 ranks in this skill will unlock the ability to train Bridge Officers in Attack Pattern Omega III. You obviously arent a Tac Captain so this does not apply to you. Ok now look at tier 5, the admiral skills and you will see Starship Energy Weapon Specialization. Click on that and in the skill details window it says Engineering Captains who learn 6 ranks in this skill can train Bridge Officers in Direct Energy Modulation 3. But again you arent an Engineer Captain so this doesnt apply to you. Lets look at one more...go back to the tier 1/Lieutenant column and scroll down until you see Starship Hull Repair and click on it. In the skill details window it says Science Captains who learn 6 ranks in this skill can train Bridge Officers in Hazard Emitters III. Since you *are* a science captain this does apply to you. There are a few more throughout the skill tree that does apply to you as well, just gotta pay attention and look for the text in the skill details.

Now you specifically asked about training targeting subsystems. This is not a captain trained ability...you go to the boff trainer and they teach your boff. You can also buy boffs from the exchange who may have the ability and you can train your active boffs using a boff candidate purchased from the exchange. And one last thing...science ships have subsystem targeting as a ship feature. If you want to train a boff in it you have to train a tactical boff. Its not a science or engineer boff ability.

Also here is a chart that may help you

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Bridge_officer_abilities

Green means it is trainable by the boff trainer npc and it can also be found on bridge officer candidates. Light Blue means it is trainable by the appropriate career captain that has spent the required amount of ranks in the skill tree. Dark Blue means it is available on certain rare boffs that are available on the exchange or through a quest.

Also you cannot what boff slot an ability goes into. By that i mean the bridge officer ability Beams Fire at Will I will always be in an ensign slot you cannot change that. If you have a ship that has a Commander Tac boff seat it has 4 slots for abilities...ensign, Lt, LCdr, and Cdr. The Cdr slot can only equip 6 tac boff abilities. Attack Pattern Beta/Delta/Omega, Dispersal Pattern Beta, Cannon Rapid Fire and Cannon Scatter Volley. You cannot decide that Beam Fire at Will III goes into the Cdr slot, no it can only go into a LCdr slot.

    two things

    1) which i'm not actually sure of, is that i heard the bug only affected kdf aligned rom not fed aligned rom. But either way this doesnt matter because...

    2) he talks about only seeing 1 tac ability on the boff trainer for Cdr which is normal. He mentions seeing a few attack patterns and some 'crummy mine' patterns in LCdr which is also normal. Then he mentions that it is the same for torpedos no Commander or LCdr torpedo boosting abilities which is also normal when looking at the boff trainer. He talks about having 6 ranks in energy weapons and projectile weapons so he should be able to train bfaw3 and thy3. But hes a science captain...not a tac captain. And as a science captain he mentions going into his inventory i assume he means his list of captain trained skills. He talks about having only two lists of science skills but no subsystem targetting. The boff version of subsystem targetting is trainable only by the boff trainers and boff candidates and only to tac boffs. So of course he isnt going to see it...

I dont think its the bug cause based on all the stuff i just mentioned it sounds more like a lack of understanding of how the system works. Which is ok because its a common mistake.

Well im fed and its effecting me.. so no its not just KDF..

Well could be he is trying to train wrong.. but if he is romulan then he could also have the added issue of bugged boffs.
