Hi folks, I rarely feel the need to post here, I read a lot but never post, prefer playing a game and figuring it out myself and making mistakes that can be learned from etc.
I had a look at STO when it was first released and decided that it didn't warrant me paying another subscription fee at the time (was already subscribed to several other games, with a lot invested in them), then I noticed it had gone f2p and decided I would give it a try, been playing for a while now, made several c store purchases including the odyssey pack, character slots, you get the idea, spent a fair amount of money on the game now and you can see my flying around here and there most days.
I readily admit that there is a lot about the game that I still do not know, yet I have been left a bit disillusioned by the new expansion.
First let me explain that this is not an attack on the expansion, free new content is great, a long boring grind to the new level cap, fair enough, I used to play the zx spectrum, waiting an hour and a half for a game to load only to crash after the first level tends to build patience with games and considering I have a level 51 alt who has just finished season 3 then I do agree, leveling was a bit too easy, I can understand peoples frustrations with the sudden grind, but this is not the purpose of my post. I liked being able to do stuff in game with characters and things from voyager even though it's not my favourite rendition of star trek
Likewise, discovering that the x amount of pounds from my own pocket that I have spent on the game is suddenly rendered wasteful due to my "end game" purchases no longer being end game and not even a token "here is one upgrade for finishing the entire new episodes" (I got a new high powered carrier ship (no longer so high powered) for finishing new content within a certain time frame recently for example) I agree with some of the people saying that at least 1 upgrade token to those of us who have spent good money would have been a good idea, letting those of us who want to, experience the upgraded ships to then see if it was worth while buying more, or going for a t6 ship.
But again, this is not the purpose of my post, neither is it to "whine" or "moar phr33 stoof plox" or to complain about any of the other numerous complaints (both justified and not) I play the game, pay my way when it's required and know just what sort of work goes into an expansion so I am not here to have a go at this or that. So hopefully some of the TLDR people are now furiously hammering their keys claiming that I am somehow crying because I want something free because I have taken the time to state what I am not asking about so more fool you if you do post such a reply.
My question is what is the reward for the time I have just spent going through the new content? I was given the same reward choices for every mission and comparing the rewards the only real choices were the purple phaser beam arrays mk xii which my only option was I could send to an alt because my main character either had better or identical, the other reward choices never even came into consideration, due to rep or quest sets, then the final mission gives me a ground weapon that has been obsolete for me since level 40.
I have heard people say that the rewards should be mk xiii yet for me they were not, so is this a bug or do I need to go through the new content with a toon already level 60 in order to get the mk xii equipment? Surely a weeks worth of grinding should be better rewarded?
I can handle the grind, I can handle not having the best ship for a week or two until wages go into the bank and I can consider purchasing a new one (that is if I can be bothered playing any more after what I've just experienced) yet I have just went through the new content, levelled up, bugs and all, I got really fed up with the grind, not because of the grind but because there was no real rewards for the time I have just spent playing, the level 59 mission is a total anti climax with possibly the worst reward out of them all and after going through the entire thing expecting something to happen I am left disappointed.
Which makes me wonder if I have missed something, are the rewards better on a higher difficulty? considering the amount of time it has taken to go through what seemed like endless patrol missions for little reward then it seems to me as if I have just wasted a weeks worth of my time expecting something that never arrived only to be left frustrated at the end and playing it all again at a higher difficulty for the same rubbish seems an effort in futility.
This is not why I or most folk play games, I understand that there is the upgrade options and r&d etc yet for me, the entire episode rewards have been ridiculous compared to the effort and time put into getting those rewards especially the end reward, unless something happens now? not looking for spoilers but surely that cannot be all there is too it? a thankless unrewarding grind just to get to the stage where I need to grind in order to get anything that I never had before I started? The same choice of a blue engine, a purple phaser or what ever the other rubbish was is all I have seen for hours and hours of patrol missions and instances which simply take longer to finish rather than give any more challenge.
I love playing a game that takes a while to complete and going through the new content in 6 days certainly isn't a heavy grind but I have nothing to show for it, nothing that I did not have before I started, am I missing something or have I just been treated like a rat in a cage, pushing buttons in hope of a reward that never comes just to see if I would?
What am I missing? What is the point? where is the motivation to reply the new content on my other characters? The next guy won't need the phasers and pretty soon none of my toons will because they will all have more than they know what to do with.
Is that it? Time in should at least attempt to equal reward out and if it's not xp then it should be decent game rewards or SOMETHING NEW rather than phasers which only purpose has been to reduce the extortionate price on the exchange for them and flood the game with them. Now it seems my only rewards will be the ones I now have to go and grind for to be able to manufacture/upgrade.
Motivation : There are still 50 Specialization points to spend ... so rinse & repeat "50 Levels" after Level 60 ... lots of fun Patrols & PVE to repeat, till your eyes bleed ...
Other characters : Nope sorry ... they're worthless from now on ... except you'd happen to be immortal & really bored ...
Reward : Your Reward within this expansion, is to gamble tons of Dil on MK XIII / XIV Gear (rightclick "Upgrade") ... everything you'll earn "the old way", is pretty much worthless sorry ...
... even new Reputation will only reward Mk XII (which requires playing on Elite btw), otherwise you wouldn't gamble Dil. on Upgrades ...
Conclusion : Nope that's the deal, you're not missing anything
Advice : Wait a few months until they realize, they made a horrible mistake ... if not never look back
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.

Thanks I figured as much but thought I would ask, just seemed like if someone wanted to put people off then surely this was the way to do it and then I kept thinking to myself "surely they wouldn't do this on purpose with a new expansion" yet I am forgetting the ex amount of other really daft "great ideas" that this and other companies have had over the years and now I am feeling a bit foolish for not knowing in the first place lol thanks again for your reply
they said quest rewards go up to Mk 13 in DR.. that may be if your level 60 thou.
They don't ! (except 1-2 unique Items, but you don't have to be 60 to get those afaik)
-> i.E. Vaudwaar Pulsewave Pistol Mk XIII from "Takedown" (Final Mission : Lvl 59)

Which makes me wonder if I have missed something, are the rewards better on a higher difficulty?....
Laughably not (and yes, I'm probably a TRIBBLE because I DO still run the PvE story content and patrols of 'Delta Rising' at Elite because I was just curious if I could and survive and honestly only 1 patrol has given me multiple deaths; and on anotther VOY voice cast mission I suffered one death.)
At Elite - the MOBs don't have better AI, just a s**t ton of HP, which can prolong a fight by quite a bit. But often the reward is a regular Weapon/Shield/AUX battery. yep 5-10 minutes for the battleships/dreadnaughts to pop and they drop a battery more often than not in my experience so far. Then best it seems to get is a MkXII green item. I've never gotten a Blue of Purple drop from Elite in DR.
And I'm sure if Gekko or one of the other Devs see this, I'm sure they'll say, "Working as Intended". STO's current take on Elite for PvE content is to quell the "STO is just easy mode. Spam y9our spacebar and watch everything pop..." crowd. Now when it comes up they can reply "Not on Elite..." <--- and that 100% true; EXCEPT that when players (like me) said we wanted more 'challenge', we hoped they'd tweak the NPC AI to use their powers better and also have some HP boost. However, Cryptic seems to have taken their approach to Elite out of the 15 year old SOE EverQuest game design book ala "When players ask for challenge; just turn the MOBs into massive HP sacks and players will never complain again."
The sad thing is, even Borticus basically admitted that tuning the NPC game AI is possible/doable; but it's more work then PWE/Cryptic thinks it's worth (based on their ROI analysis.
TLDR: To answer your question simply: No, not even close to worth it, if gear drops are what you're looking for by upping to 'Elite' - and with Elite going up to 110% HP of what it is now; even LESS incentive to bump up to Elite. (IMO)

You realize, of course, that "going up to 110% of what it is now" is an increase of ten percent, not better than doubling...
As for what's fun, some of us have fun differently than you do. If you're not having fun now, I'm not sure you'll have fun in the future - that's on you. Please stop pretending, though, that everyone has the same opinions. I for one have a terrible case of altitis, and actively enjoy creating and leveling new characters, checking out new options as I go.
