I have been away for a while, but now Delta Rising is coming, I am thinking of returning to the game.
I used to play as a Fed Sci. Not fully developed, but I have spent a few quite good hours developing this Sci toon (Omega and Romulan reputations are completed).
My question is, if I am coming back to the game, is it possible to get high DPS with Sci captain?
Or would it be better to create a new Tact captain to get high DPS?
I mostly do PvE, but since STO is so DPS oriented, I want to get a decent DPS if possible.
My KDF sci uses a Karfi torp build that rolls around 11k dps. My feddie Sci/Vesta beamboat pushes about 9k and is way short of the gear my KDF has.
They're not pure sci builds, they still rely on weapon/spike damage somewhat, but push the envelope on GW3/Tyken/TBR etc.
If you really want to specialize in Sci, I'd point you to PvP players, who tend to get the most out of that profession/ship class as opposed to a PvE slappy like me.
High DPS? Yes, undoubtedly. The highest DPS? Nope.
Sadly, a Tac captain can boost even sci skills damage potential so the sci loses here a bit as well.
But... and it's a big but... a Sci captain in any ship can be deadly. The right gear for your playstyle and the right ship, combined with the right BOFF skills and DOFFs boosting those skills, can be awesome fun.
I have a KDF sci in a Vo'quv carrier. My pets do almost all my DPS whilst I sit there and spam sci stuff at the enemies. Confuse them, placate them, strip their shields and make them sit still whilst your pets (or another player) pound them into dust. Lovely.
My wife runs a fed sci in a dyson science destroyer (free event ship) and uses high Aux power, mines and torpedos to great effect. She has run this particular toon in almost every free sci ship/mirror sci ship available at endgame without buying a fleet ship or Vesta and loves the fun of not just bringing the cannons to bare.
I run a fed sci in a Chel Grett destroyer with tetryon DHCs and turrets and a torp (romulan plasma/dyson gravimetric photon for preference) and I run him like any other escort/raptor pilot but I have sci skills instead of a huge DPS boost. He's got first in Crystalline Catastrophe and other pve queues and was the first toon I ever rolled. He's not the most efficient (and running tetryons gets me laughed at a lot) but when I melt the shields off an enemy and blow them away they stay just as dead as any other kill by any other pilot.

Sci R&D level 15 trait, new part gens ship trait coming in Dauntless (I think), conservation of energy, insp leader, part gens at exactly 400, TBR, FBP, and GW. Then fire away while spamming those sci skills. I've heard a torp boat with TBR on a Wells in DR causes heavy damage.
TBH, my most successful PVP char is a sci.. Wells temporal completed with the temporal warfare set and the console from the mirror temporal vessel.. the amount of control (grav wells plus time effects and photonic call in plus a tractor beam) is insane, always behind the enemy.. Havent had this one parsed but win often..

For PvE in Delta Rising, a modest drain build combined with modest DPS can do pretty well. Modest drain meaning 275 flow caps since that is easy to achieve with epic gear.
DPS requirements in DR ASTFs/ESTFs are around 15k to 30k per player - build to that and you will be ok.
Bear in mind with current power creep and DR power leap, Sci skill buffs are stacking to well massive skill point boosts, so now is not a bad time to go Sci/Sci or Tac/Sci captain/ship.
In fact, Sci has probably never been this potent as it is now.
My sci torpattrox usually rates between 12-15k, my sci captained vesta pugs with 18-23k. I consider this high dps, though you wont be able to do much more than 30k (sci captained scimitar), maybe 35k might be the limit (scimi^^). But I think everything over 20k can be considered high dps.
You will not get as much raw damage output from a science captain as you would a Tactical, and you will not get as much weapon damage from a science ship as you would a tac or engineering ship since you only have 6 hardpoints, but you can certainly excell at your role and with a bit of study you can certainly be competitive in sto dealing damage with a sci, at least among the average players who make up the most of sto.
I must tell you: Its not really your job to do 'dps' - Without going too deep into how the whole idea of 'dps' is ridiculous and shallow in ANY video game, or how measuring, comparing, and boasting dps is as equally shallow.. the role of damage dealer (the only place dps would be relevant) is directly dependant on the role of buff/debuff/healer.
No sci I have will compete with some of my friends who fly tac ships, no matter how tight my run is, but I Promise you that my presence in the match increased their damage output by a signifigant margin whether it was from them staying alive in a compromising position so they could unload their damage or it was through enemy debuffs and friendly buffs - as a Sci captain, I am the reason the total combined damage output of the team gets as high as it gets.
What does the tac do for the team? Not as much as I do in a sci.
My sci doesent get the big yellow numbers, and wont be on the top of the self gratifying dps meter posts in team chat, there will be no physical viewable proof of the fact that the credit to the teams damage output is just as equally mine as it is the player with the highest damage, even if he unloaded twice the damage I did.
How do you want to derive your satisfaction? From being the top damage dealer with your efforts focused on how you will look better then your teamates, or would you like to derive your satisfaction from knowing theat the success of the entire team and each individual's sense of satisfaction has been thanks to your efforts in the 'dps background'.
DPS always has been and allways will be a means from an individual to validate themselves in front of others. At the point that you do Not need this validation and gratification you will be ready to play a science captain. until then, just stick to making things blow up, because being a Science General is advanced business.
Well, one of the ships with more probabilities to maximize the dps is the Vesta. With the auxiliary phasers build, you can just maximize your auxiliary power to output all the damage to auxiliary cannons and science abilities at the same time, its really amazing , pup a gravity well / maximized particle and graviton generators skill / plus some particle generators boosts, and you will be have a really awesome scie ship plus a great weapons output damage. You still will have to fit the afterwards with phaser turrets. Personally, the most damage will output from the forward auxiliary phaser banks, and maybe you should load the afterwards with other special weapons, like the dyson gravimetric torpedo, the breen trans cluster and other special torpedo.
Other science ships, i dont have a clue, i only have the Karfi in my kdf toon with an antiproton build, and it performs amazingly well, i really love it, but still the Vesta is by far the best science ship so far.
It seems like I will be able to get a decent DPS from Sci toon indeed
Started to create a new Tac toon, but I realized it will take a very long time to develop the new toon to the same point where my Sci toon is (reputation etc).
Now that I know Sci can do well, I will focus on developing this toon further. Plus, with Delta Rising, I can upgrade items to maximize damages

Yup, but it depends on the ship as well.. a sci toon can do decent damage but not in all science ships... for general rule, a normal science ship will not output enough damage to be even compared with the Vesta , the Karfi and other science ships more oriented to tactical purposes.
Hello OP. just a friendly heads up that a very similar discussion about science ships and dps is being had in the Builds, Powers, and Game Mechanics forum. Also there are a few builds posted in DSiD ship build thread for sci torp boats that offer pretty strong dps Rck01's provides a pretty good step by step as well.
