STO isn't canon, and neither are any of the books.

variant37's stance is just about spot-on to mine, for both his practical reasons for going KDF, and his in-game justification of it.

I've got to tell you guys, I've got a real Betty/Veronica thing going on trying to decide on a ship. I've got what feel to me like reasonable builds of both a Fleet Mogai (linked above) and the Fleet Ar'kif. They're both good-looking ships, slight edge to the Valdore. But then the Ar'kif wins those points right back by virtue of its hangar bay. I might not have been kidding earlier when I said I would decide this with a coin toss...

So the character got created last night and played up to level 22 or 23. I got him into his Dhaelan, and it turns out I like that one more than I thought I would (i hadn't realized prior to this that the ship has costume options that remove the "pointed arch" wings). When I hit 30, I'll rock the Valdore. :)

    Later on,
    Generator

P.S. Anyone got an answer to my question from earlier, about what (if any) factors boost the damage of plasma's DOT ticks?

EDIT: I'm coming around to the Ar'kif as my endgame ship, because I realized I will also have access to the vet ship, and I perceive that to have greater similarity to the Mogai than the Ar'kif.

The hangar bay sealed it for me for the akrif, it just adds a little bit more fun to your game. The ship is very fun, moves well and looks great, it can put out a lot f damage and between the singularity powers and the hangar pets it has lots of flexibility for when you just want to make things less min/max and more interactive.

Kdf is good cause you can throw slavers on it as well. I have the Mogai, the vet ship and the scimitar and of the three I like the Ar'kif the most. I run in guns plazing nuke something and then singularity jump, and behind me is a mini wave of fighters to add insult to injury

It's been a while since I've played the Romulan story arc, but isn't there at least one mission where you're fighting against the Tal Shiar and the Klingons show up to fight right next to you, while Starfleet sits on the sidelines and tells you they can't get involved? And then at the end of the arc Ambassador Jiro basically says, "Well sorry we couldn't help you, because morals, but join us anyway!" *picardfacepalm*

I'll admit that I'm biased. I favor the KDF in this game for a couple of reasons. First, their playerbase is much smaller than the Fed, and I'll always pull for an underdog (the Roms are underdogs too, we should all be on the same side!). Second, the combat-heavy, "shoot first" nature of STO lends itself much more to the KDF philosophy than it does to Federation ideals. Starfleet comes across as faintly hypocritical when most of the time what you're doing is blowing up whatever's in sight.

Regardless, like I said before, the main reasons I chose KDF for my Reman was for practical reasons, access to the leech and marauding, not because of any particularly strong RP feelings. If anyone chooses to ally with the Fed on their Romulan, I'll only hold it a little bit against you.

    Ah. ;) Fair enough.

I admit I do tend to roleplay quite a bit so sometimes I'll ignore that's strictly practical to go with what my character would go with. Mine likes the idea of freedom, of a free society ruled by a group of people over a single Emperor. Though that being said she doesn't really like the idea of reunification. In her eyes both Romulans and Vulcans need to change a bit to make that possible. AKA: The Vulcans have to learn a balanced approach toward emotions.

Between her natural tendancies and the knowledge of what the Klingons did after Hobus, she allies with Starfleet though make no mistake her first loyalty is to the Romulan people.

As for me, in truth I play a Starfleet Sci and Eng, a Klingon Tac, and a Romulan Tac equally. All building up reputation and working on endgame. I have three unique perspectives to play with.
