Can anyone give me a better understanding of the limitations on the new ship trait system? For example: If I buy the new Raptor, will the trait it comes with work on any ship, of any faction?
Will ship traits be limited by faction?
Will they be limited by ship type, ie: Escort, Science or Cruiser?

if you mean the trait you get for a getting t6 to shpi mastery 5 it has 4 new slots just for these new traits. and they work like every other trait in the game.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

Just to make sure I understand you, if I buy the new KDF Raptor, I can use that new trait on any KDF Character I have that ship on, but not any of my Fed characters?
you slot the trait on your character just like you would a weapon. every characters that claims the raptor can have the trait, because it comes with the raptor.

This is from what I gather:-
T5U ships come with the four basic ship traits that are dependent on their ship class.
T6 ships come with the four basic ship traits AND their special ship trait.
That special ship trait, when unlocked at ship mastery level 5, can be used on any other ship that belongs to that character.
I think you are referring to the mastery traits, these traits are specific to each ship and unlock as you level the ship, not yourself, i.e. xp gained while flying one ship only applies to that ship, not to any of your other ships.

Sort of. Think about it like the traits from reputation. If you have Klingon Bob and Klingon Fred, just because Bob is tier 5 in omega rep does not mean that Fred gets the active trait. Fred still has to rank up his own omega rep. Once Bob has unlocked the reputation traits they work on any ship he flies or on the ground... Provided that he selects them as active in one of his 4 trait slots.
Ship traits work exactly the same.
All 5u and 6 ships unlock up to 4 trait slots that work just like trait slots for your captain, but initially you have no traits to put into those slots.
When you get a tier 6 ship to level 5 (i know the naming is confusing here) it unlocks a trait which you can them put into any slot on any ships that specific captain owns and that has ship trait slots unlocked. Other captains have to level up their copy of the ship to unlock the trait if they want to use it. Since only Klingons can use that ship only Klingons can unlock that trait.
This is important if they add traits to new lockbox and lobi ships. The raptor is account wide, but lockbox ships aren't. So all your Klingons have the opportunity to get the raptor's trait. If one gets and unlocks a trait from a lockbox ship, none of the others can even try for it unless you get extra copies of that ship.

Wrong. 5u and 6 ships can get up to 4 ship trait slots. Only a tier 6 can unlock a trait to put into one of those slots. Once you unlock a trait (they will be available in lock boxes and possibly other sources as well, not just from tier 6 ships) you can use it on any ship with a trait slot unlocked.

Actually I think you misunderstood him so here's a translation.
"Basic Ship Trait" = Buffs you unlock at mastery levels 1-4 (fixed to ship)
"Special Ship Trait" = Ship traits unlocked at ML 5 (slots into the four spots available)

T-5u ships have 4 ship upgrades (depending on the type of ships). These upgrades you get as your ship levels up, and they only effect that ship. They're not traits but ship specific upgrades
T-6 ships have the same 4 ship upgrades (well not the same, they change depending on the type of ship you fly) but they als have a 5th level, a ship trait.
While the 4 ship upgrades are the same per type of ship, the ship trait is ship specific, meaning each ship you level up will unlock a different trait (as of right now).
These traits are character specific, just like the rep and crafting traits are. Once you unlock them you slot them like any other trait, in a new line of traits called "ship traits".
You can have only 4 ship traits active per character.
The ship traits are not account unlocks. So even if I unlock a ship trait on one fed character I can't use it on another fed character unless I unlock it on that character.

Good catch, those slots aren't initially empty I was wrong on that bit. I had to go back and reread the blog. Thanks.
Star Ship Traits are not slotted on ships, they're slotted on your character's Traits tab. You can mix&match any of the Star Ship Mastery Traits Lvl 5.
which goes back to the op's original point: if you buy a raptor then every kdf character can use the raptor, so every kdf gets the trait.
But every character that has the raptor will have to reach mastery level 5 in the raptor. You can't get the mastery level 5 trait from the raptor on one character and then just magically have it on the others.

mastery level 5 unlocks at level 60. mastery levels 1-4 unlock between 51 and 59, and they're all passive buffs. all you need to do to unlock level 5 is get each character to 60. then he has access to 4 master ship traits that you can slot on him.
I'd say a bigger issue is "character" vs "account" restriction in this case, as unless you're limited to one or two ship traits max, and instead have 4 like all the other non-captain traits, then only fed characters will be able to fill their bar.

iirc from the podcast, there's 2 mastery traits that will unlock in the new delta rep. There's also going to be traits in various lockboxes and whatnot; and they'll end up being sold on the exchange. so if you buy a kdf ship and get 2 traits from the delta rep, all you need to do is get a 4th from some other source. if you bought both kdf ships you have 4. plus there's going to be other ships released in the future. and if the lockbox ships are t6 they're all going to have traits you can use too.
This topic was so confusing. Thank you all for the information you have provided. This will help be to decide which T6 ship (if any) I want to buy as right now I only have enough Zen for one ship. So I want to get the most out of it. As my KDF characters don't have access to a fleet ship, I was thinking I'd get the Raptor for them both (one is Tac, the other an Eng) and then my Fed Characters can make do with the fleet ships I have for them for awhile.
