I was a fool as many and tried to update one shield for testing. I managed to update the shield from level 12 to level 13. After spending a good amount of Dilithium, I discovered: my shield level 13 has exactly the same characteristics of the shield level 12! Exactly the same! No characteristic was improved!
Do not fall for this trick that only has the purpose of reducing the amount of Dilithium in your account!:mad::mad:

Many of the upgrades were at or about 1 point increase for all that dilithium. I didn't see much of anything I would call "significantly better" except maybe the Plasma Repeating Pistol. I don't call 1 point significant but then I am also not a min/max player. Everyone has their own opinions.

Same thing happened to me with my adapted maco shields. Also lost the modifiers on the omega torp and cutting beam =[
Yep. Item upgrading system is NOT finished and the clowns pushed it to Holodeck anyway. Just another example of bugs that were reported that never got fixed.
Maybe Cryptic thought it would be a good laugh because people keep saying things like "it's gonna go live full of bugs" and "it's gonna go live unpolished; it needs more work first". It happens every seasonal update during beta testing.
So they figured "why bother?" and pushed it to Holodeck anyway and gave us exactly what we were expecting: going live full of bugs and unpolished, except they went 1 step further: it isn't even finished yet or anywhere close to being in a final state.
Whatever. At this point I don't think Cryptic gives a **** anymore. Hell they should just release the rest of Delta Rising early and finish it later.
I have been checking what the item will most likely upgrade to by looking at the preview of the item to the right hand side of the upgrade screen. If I'm not impressed, it doesn't get upgraded. When I have all my main gear upgraded I may go back to upgrade some of the other things, but I'm looking to upgrade weapons, shields and core ship parts first, then ground gear.
#1 - Be wary of even previewing special named weapons. I have seen special weapons like "Piercing Tetryon," the old [Borg] space weapon mods, etc. lose their special characteristics/mods just from previewing and not even trying to upgrade.
#2 - Make sure you look at the stats at the Preview panel before you even put in 1 upgrade pack. Some will slot but the difference between Mk XII & Mk XIII is zero.

It's called a bug. You submit a bug report. You should have figured that out on your own.
It's called a bug. You submit a bug report. You should have figured that out on your own.
It's a bug? Really? You don't say!
You are right that it is his fault for believing that the Upgrade System should have some degree of reliability in actually working. He should be ashamed! Demoted! Kicked out of Starfleet!
Of course, what you said also doesn't help him in his lost resources spent on a item that was not upgraded. I mean, it's his fault that he expected the Upgrade System to... Upgrade... his equipment that he spent resources on.
It sucks that you wasted all that Dil for absolutely nothing.
Personally, I'm not going to even touch this system till it's been out for at least a month or two (if I do it at all.) Things like this are going to happen, this system is NOT done by any means and there will no doubt be some items that gain way more then intended and some that gain less (or in this case nothing at all.)
Best advice at this point, just wait. Don't use this system right now, let the PvP Min/Max 'Gotta have it NOW' crowd do all the testing and find all the bugs. Sit back, save your Dil, level your R&D and wait for it to smooth itself out before you use it.
You don't need Mk XIII for anything today, and you probably won't for a long time if at all. I know it's tempting to click that 'Upgrade Item' button, but just know that button comes with quite an unnecessary risk. Not saying it was the OP's fault (it absolutely wasn't) it's just a sad reality.
I've actually had positive experiences with the upgrade system so far.
The biggest issue I've had is that my "Assimilated Subtranswarp Engines Mk XII" won't upgrade. The other parts from the Assimilated set upgraded just fine, but not the impulse engine.
This is holodeck. I submit bug reports on *Tribble*. I play on holodeck.
Well, good luck getting a bug fixed on Holodeck then. ;-)
I agree that they should have held the launch of all of this. My understanding is that they're trying to work up a solution now which will involve attempts to either update missing mods into place or provide a trade-in, in the case of upgraded gear with fewer than intended or non-functional mods. If a piece of gear got downgraded however, that will likely require direct GM or developer intervention.
You can debate all day long whether you should have to file a ticket but not filing a ticket in some cases means your issue won't get fixed. The bugs that have happened, happened.
Also, a live server in an MMO should never be bug free. It should probably have fewer bugs and issues that what we got in this last patch but the idea that a test server can solve all bugs or that bugs should never have to be reported on a live server is outrageously unrealistic and the level of effort to even attempt to pursue this would likely mean no updates, ever.
I will upgrade my schools. This way it will settle itself in the next few weeks. I did upgrade my ground undine shields and the item showed increase in shields from earlier, so no idea if at all.
Might get back and realise that i never upgraded as time itself was reversed with the holodeck being offline last night.
Delta rising is going to be like this as well. There is simply no way that they can find all the bugs before launch. But 20 percent bugs squished is okay i think.
Live long and have fun or die trying..:D
Whether you think you are right or wrong, either way you are RIGHT.
I upgraded my KHG Shields & that extra i on then end makes such a difference to its performance its unbelievable,,,,,lol,,,wont be upgrading anything else its a rip off,,,,

I'm impressed somebody else actually used their brain. The OP would've been well served if he had patience...or another coffee to wake up.

Except, as people have already commented, previewing the item can affect the original item without 'upgrading' as well.
Its a great system when core functionality doesn't work correctly. (At least loadouts are just a bit buggy to non-functional, not outright broken)
The easiest way to use brain power before jumping into anything is to at least skil the tribble official thread for this or the patch notes from the last 2 or 3 patches and see what players had to say and or warn about. It was all there available to the PUBLIC to see! I'm still stunned they brought this resource sink to live as quickly as they did. There was barely time for proper testing.

Yes you're right, but I was excited about this new possibility of the game and decided to try the new system updates. Unfortunately it never should have left the server trible with all these bugs!
Is there some kind of button you press to get the upgrade screen to reappear?
As a test, I put in a phaser rifle to be upgraded and closed the window. Now I can't even find it. Its like the weapon just vanished. (Days and days ago by now.)
So, either is user error or the upgrade system 'vanishes' my items. I haven't figured out which it is yet. But like so many others I don't plan to use the system for another month or two until most of the inevitable issues have been sorted out, aside from a single test with one minor alt to check it all out.
Personally I think its a sad state of affairs where new content is released, and many players don't even bother touching said new feature as they await bug fixes long before they even begin.

Press "I" to show your inventory, click assets and you will see the upgrade button and you will be able to get your item back
What no one is posting along with their complaint of a weak or failed upgrade is.. what is your R&D skill level in that category when you went to upgrade?
If you saw no to a pitiful increase, and your R&D skill was below level 5, then you should have expected a lacking result.
They told us....
"..keep working on your R&D schools. Level 5 in an R&D school will allow you to craft Basic Tech Upgrades, level 10 will open access to Improved Tech Upgrades, and level 15 grants the ability to craft Superior Tech Upgrades. Focus on the school associated with the gear that you want to upgrade first if you really want to improve your ships shields, work on your Shields R&D skill."
I heard yesterday, during James' live stream ( http://www.twitch.tv/jameso428 ) that he's had success and made a lot of money selling upgraded items.
So while this doesn't tackle the bugs, it should make you aware that maybe you didn't do something right either. What was your R&D skill?

R&D level has nothing to do with upgrades other than what quality of upgrade kit you can craft.

Tech upgrade kit quality only affects how much dilithium upgrades cost as the high the quality the fewer you have to use to upgrade something.

Key words are "Allow you to craft tech upgrades". There's no skill involved in applying them. You slot your item. You slot your upgrade tech. You push a button X times paying dilithium for each press until you hit 100% ready to upgrade then you pay dilithium again. Something seemingly random (if you are lucky enough to get a new stat) pops out the other end with an XIII behind it and a fractional change hardly worth even one of the button press's dilithium on most of the items I even looked at. I barely upgraded anything. 0.9 points is not worth the cost.
It's called a bug. You submit a bug report. You should have figured that out on your own.
Oh yes, and lets also gloss over the fact that Cryptic, in their usual show of disregard for their player base, put something onto holodeck 3 weeks earlier than it should have been!
We were far from finishing it, the thread for the testing was by far the longest one related to the recent update. This is a slap in the face to every good person who took the time to test this on tribble or logically work out the flaws.
I honestly don't get why they suddenly needed to release it...
Ten soldiers wisely led will beat a hundred without a head. - Euripides
I no longer do any Bug Hunting work for Cryptic. I may resume if a serious attempt to fix the game is made.
And yet no one seems to remember the devs are trying to give us a freebie, to give us a head-start when the full system really goes live... the state of the system is irrelevant for this gesture, and certainly not a sign that they don't care.
Anyway, despite being sorry that it happened, bugs happen OP, no matter the server - thus, you should submit bug reports no matter what
Also, btw, Tribble IS a test server, with priority on game-breaking stuff first, then working the way down. But they can't catch everything (no one does)
Was named Trek17.
Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh', if only due to personal standards.
