Hey everyone! I wanted to make a forum thread for you guys to help me pick a cool topic for my next mission!
This isn't just any "give me a mission to make" thread, though.
What I'm specifically looking for are suggestions coming from people who have played my missions and know my strengths as an author, and can think of an interesting way that those strengths can be applied to a hook for a new mission or some kind of setup.
I can be fickle when it comes to feedback but I'm sure that you guys can come up with some good notions. Have at it!
P.S. Thanks to a fellow community member's idea for this to help me get out of my authoring slump.
This is a tough one. How about Section 31 develops a new form of time travel involving a transporter. The mission is to breach there security and go back in time to prevent the formation of Section 31.
Just kidding...
On your actual subject; I suggest you create a Federation stealth mission against <Insert Enemy> where the player's goal is to locate information regarding the enemy's defenses for a specific battle front. Perhaps it could be for an invasion of the enemy's home planet or colony. The twist is that the player actually discovers a secret that their entire civilization is actually on the verge of collapse. The player finds that the entire premise of the conflict is to hide this inevitable collapse and they are too proud to ask for help. The player would have to decide if they will offer assistance to the current enemy to make a potential friend or drive them towards the collapse. You would make all combat optional with potential diplomatic or humanitarian aid for the enemy.
There are a couple of challenges to creating this type of mission. First, would be the use of a Cryptic race that already exists in the game. To get around this I would make up a race so it would not have to involve a specific Cryptic race. That way you could do with them as you please. The second challenge would be developing maps that allow the player to choose combat diplomatic choices. This would probably be best achieved by allowing the majority of maps to be investigative in nature with optional combat and perhaps a few optional diplomatic opportunities. None of these would change the outcome of the mission. That would be saved for the final map. The third challenge would be the dialogue that leads to these conclusions. This is where your writing skills are flexed. It is too easy to write dialogue that leads to a simple outcome with no real thought behind it. You would not be able to do that with this type of mission. The story behind it and the dialogue that tells that story would have to be complex.
Cool ideas. I like the pure diplomacy aspect of Evil70th's specifically, that kind of dichotomy in mission design might be interesting to pursue. If anyone else has anything please keep it coming.
I was absolutely serious when I suggested something horror themed to you.
Not sure exactly what, but horror/thriller is a genre Trek rarely dips into.
I bet you could do a fun thing knowing all the tricks you know.
I would like to see a mission (epic series maybe?) that highlights the stuff that makes the Federation great and an awesome place to be instead of doing the "look how corrupt everyone is" routine like in the Purity series (doesn't mean it isn't awesome and enjoyed the heck out of it, it just made me hate the unifom I am wearing when I was done).
It should do for the Federation that same thing that the "Honor of [blank]" series did for the Klingon Empire. You know, about the what makes your faction great, instead of how it sucks.
It should be like the Voyager episode where they got sucked into the titular void and how the cooperation with everyone made them feel a little like being at home.
Sigh, remember the time where space operas were about how awesome the future was going to be rather than how (in a thinly vield "War on X" allegory) it is going to suck? (Looking at you, BsG!)
PS: On a more general note, Thanks to each and everyone who makes these good story heavy foundry missions. It is the reason I keep coming back to STO (for ~2 years now).

This, do a horror episode.
I want to do one such as this myself and I believe I have material I can use. If you need inspiration, try to make a Trek parody of something like a horror game, movie, etc.

A concept I've been wanting to try for a while is 'you are alone, completely by yourself on the whole ship/base... and someone knocks on the door.' Horror is really an area Trek sadly never went near very often, though when done right it can be great (Empok Nor from DS9).

If we could get rid of boffs it would help with that kind of atmosphere.
Hey, if youre still taking suggestions, what about something that involves a species that only speaks in verbal irony? Kinda like the TNG episode, Darmok. You could start this off by having the first thing a Starfleet officer says to this species being we come in peace .

I hope this post helps.
