What ships do you tend to use for the Episodes?

mli777mli777 Member Posts: 90 Arc User
With the upcoming Delta Rising expansion and episodes, I think it might be interesting to see what types of ships do players use in the Cryptic made Episodes.

So the questions I have are:

Do you have a preference for which ship to use in the storylines?

What type of builds do you use? Similar to those used for PVE queues? PVP builds? Or something more like canon (ie, Phasers and Photons/Quantums on Fed ships, Disruptors and Photons on KDF ships, etc.)

If you are picking a non-T6 ship to use for the Delta Rising missions, which one would you choose?

Dyson, Breen Raider, Risian Cruiser. Use stuff that gets free upgrades for now while we see how things play out. Last thing I want to do is let myself get all hyped up, buy new ships, then decide its nothing but a lot of grind and get ticked off.

Yeah, if there's one gimmick of MMOs I loathe more than any other, it is the need to haul around half a dozen different "resist sets" for different content zones/enemy types.

It's stupidly circular. Fight these enemies to get a currency type that lets you buy gear to defeat this enemy type faster. Now I've bought the gear...wait...now I have no reason to fight this enemy type any more since I bought the gear already...there's a new enemy type to fight...that gives a new currency type...

    Ugh...

Just another version of a time gate/gear check.

Then there's the inevitable extra 5 minute wait while someone fiddles in their bank to find the right set, etc.

    BUT! To answer the question.

I'll be flying a T5U-11 Vo'Quv (eventually) unless they put a frigate-capable Romulan carrier in the game.

I'll probably go into DR with all my ships upgraded and decide to make changes from there

    This ^

I mainly play my Reman Tac and Romulan Sci

Reman is in a Recon DSD and will still be, Romulan is in a Tulwar and will stay there.

    Interesting thoughts so far.

So, for myself, when it comes to missions, I generally like to go do some roleplaying.

For my main character, a Federation Tactical, I typically like use my Assault Cruiser Refit (as named in my signature). It is my main ship, though I do like to occasionally switch to others on PVE queues.

For Cryptic missions, the ship is usually outfitted with mostly canon weapons, aside from a forward Gravimetric Photon Torpedo and a Borg KCB.

    So the layout is
    Fore:
2x Phaser Beam Arrays, 1x Wide Angle Quantum launcher, One Photon Launcher
    Aft:
2x Phaser Beam Arrays, 1x Borg KCB, 1x Gravimetric Photon Torpedo Launcher

The Boff layout is adapted from the cookie cutter A2B/FAW build, but with Torpedo Spread III along with some other powers like Reverse shield polarity.

I tend to develop different playstyles for different characters and adapt ships to those playstyles.

I prefer to set those ships up to handle whatever I throw at them when I'm in the mood for that playstyle.. rather than hot-swapping between ships that are super-specialized for specific content.

On the flip side, this means each character I run through each type of content presents its own perks and challenges each time I play it.

My Plasma Torpedo Vesta(meticulously maintained distance, timing and zone control) will approach a mission very differently than my Vacuum Bastion(charge in, pull everything close, and unleash exotic AoE damage) will; my Bio-S'golth(align, collect, destroy) is a very different experience compared to my ADSD Drain-boat(saturate and lock-down); my Starfleet-standardized(phaser arrays/photon/quantum) Regent(dodge, weave, evade) does things differently than my KDF-standardized Bortasqu(lancing attack runs with beam arrays and forward cannons).

    Depends on the toon.

There's the Fed Romulan tac in his fleet Tvaro......the Fed science officer in the Recluse.....the Romulan KDf in an Adapted BC......the KDF engineer in his Bortas......the Gorn scientist in her Voth ships.....

They all have their own way of doing things.

ETA I could have gone on, but figured twelve examples would be overkill.....

I generally do this too. I have an idea how a given character will play and I evolve them as I move up through tiers of ship. By 50 I have a much stronger idea how the character works and that's when I'll pick two ships for then that best work with their style.

Must admit, I did ponder putting my KDf engineer in his Chell Grett T5u.

Fine ship in its own right, and upgraded could be rather fun.

PvE or PVP doesn't matter, I always fly my Science Odyssey the U.S.S. Liberty and despite the fact that I bought the pack I'll probably still remain in my Odyssey.

As stupid as it may sound, I feel she's mine, she's become my home in STO :) like Scotty, I just don't know if I can part with her.

I have an engineer in a fleet ambassador that feels much the same way.

Was levelling him when they first offered the T3 and T5 versions.

He flew the T3, kept it through T4 and hasn't flown anything but an Ambassador since.

My stock standard set for Cryptic missions and Foundry is:
    • Federation Engineer: Odyssey science
    • Federation Tactical: Fleet Avenger (heavy weapons layout: beams with one DHC)
    • Federation Science: Vesta (Disabling Support carrier)
    • KDF Engineer: Bortasqu Command
    • KDF Tactical: Fleet Mogh (for the moment, too much like Avenger so going into a B'rel or similar soon)
    • KDF Science: Korath Temporal (shield stripping and control support)
    • Romulan Engineer: Fleet D'Deridex
    • Romulan Tactical: Fleet T'Varo
    • Romulan Science: Fleet Daeinos (Dyson for Voth missions)

I play Star Trek style so every ship has torpedos and energy weapons, ability to survive (I consider getting blown up once a fail, and twice as "something's wrong, back to the drawing board"), and ability to hold my own (whether PvE or solo, my ship or toon must be able to perform and usually occupies a middle ground... I'm almost never the highest-DPS in a team but I'm usually not the lowest either).

I'll probably go for T6 ships for Delta missions. If I were to go in with a T5U, the Odyssey which is the most flexible of my builds.

Each of my characters pretty much has 1 ship they use for everything. I have other ships outfitted that I occasionally play just for 'something different,' but for the most part my characters use their 'main' ship for all content.

Fed Tac- Fleet Assault Cruiser Refit
Rom Engineer - Scimitar Dreadnought Warbird

I rarely switch ships, but occasionally I break out my Obelisk Carrier, Mirror Advanced Escort or my Mirror Universe Reconnaissance Science Vessel. They're fun to play, but none of them compare to my 'main' ships.
    Insert witty signature line here.

This is the case for me as well; the only character that regularly switches ships is my first character, who has one main ship for story content (roleplaying if you will) and a more robust one for queues. I keep the first around of nostalgia, and will likely take it into the DQ for the story content there.

Main sci: Fleet Star Cruiser for story content, D´Kora marauder for queues.
The rest is in my signature. :)

    Depends on the character.

Vulcan - Regent for normal stuff. She will probably be the only one doing DR stuff at first, simply because she gets all the budget to use on gear and stuff...

Altmer - Depends entirely upon when the T6 intrepid is released, because it is almost certainly coming... Shame I didn't do the Anniversary event on her really.

    Fed-Rom - D'deridex. Rom Plasma DBB build.

    KDF-Rom - D'deridex. Rom Plasma DHC build.

Klingon - depends, could be one of two very squishy BoPs, could be a beam boat Vor'cha, could be a DHC + turrets laugh a second jousting Vo'quv racer. (her most effective ship, as unlike the others it's actually got a PvP kill... [via ramming speed admittedly])

    My still being levelled guys:

Saurian. Her NX- class. (She wont be doing any DR stuff for a very long time, as she will need to be totally min maxxed, with Epic Mk XIV of specified mods before I even debate attempting DR stuff on her, and she certainly wont touch new PvE Elites until power creep brings them down to ISE level now.)

Klingon. Some sort of Cruiser. Probably...

Gorn. RA Varanus, to eventually become FT5-U Varanus.

Mine fly thier own ships. My main has an Armitage with MACO set, Borg KCB and consol. Phasers, grav. torp. and adapted trans. torp. I tried switching it out for a Patrol Escort fitted out to fight the Voth, but it did not make that much differince.

Each of my characters has a selection of ships available, though not all of them are combat-worthy yet. I periodically change the ship I'm using on a particular character to get more experience with the ship type, and compare effectiveness against various foes. All 4 of my alts have Risan corvettes & cruisers, but since half of them are Romulan, they are limited to a different range of flyable ships than their allies.

Ultimately, whatever ship my alts happen to be using at the time is the one they go into an episode with, unless the mission proves to be too hard, and a stronger ship is called for ("Last Stand" is one example of this).

My fed engi uses 3 ships that are getting free T5-U upgrade so he will use one of those, probably the Risian War Liner. Another toon uses a Chel Grett thats getting upgraded for free so she will use that. The other 5 toons only have fleet T5, so they are going into retirement for casual DOFFing, and I will skip the episodes on them if possible.

Any ship with a cloaking device that doesn't take up a console slot works for me. This is one reason why while I primarily play KDF my one Fed has a Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer.

I like to control the engagement and angle of contact.
