See above; I'm fairly sure FFXIV isn't the only game that's licked this nuisance... on which note I'll have to track down some screen grabs to present as evidence.
For this purpose, I think the following might be acceptable as an opening argument:
I truly agree, the weapons look cartoonish and I think part of why they made the weapons so large is to show off each unique piece, the weapons are artistic and if they are smaller scale then we won't see as much detail on the weapons.
That'd be a bloody silly reason if true; it's not like there's a shortage of places where the weapon models could get their proverbial fifteen minutes while remaining appropriately scaled. The character selection screen comes to mind, as do some cutscenes.
I'd like to see a revamp of the appearances of the common weapons along side a scaling down/with player
The older designs have long since been out down by recent additions and improvements to the clothing and character textures.
They stick out like sore thumbs from the games early years like toys a child has outgrown but keeps for sentimental reasons , frankly, we need a metaphorical garage/carboot/lawn/yard sale to get rid of them

I loled hard at the incessant (and now banal) attribution of bad art to the F2P model. Bad art, especially when the main problem is as easy to fix as scaling, has to do with dev taste, not source of income. Most of the models in question were created during the long period when this was not F2P, so... I mean, do you need a Vulcan to slap you?
They are afraid items and effects won't be clearly visible at a smaller scale, and they're right. STO IS cartoony by design. Love it, hate it, but at least keep your little opinions to yourselves. You're acting like the whiners who actually expected Nintendo to remake Wind Waker not cel-shaded back in 2002.

That fear is, I believe, unjustified with respect to items. I would also put forth the opinion that effects (i.e. Nanoprobe Infestation) are somewhat outside the focus of this thread.
The "weapons are big for identification" thing goes out the window when you look at the newer weapons, which are better scaled and still easily identifiable. The old weapons really need work done to them, I mean female NPC characters can't even use them without major clipping issues...
I think the beams/effects is another thread, and yes I think they could be toned down a little. However I think the issue of graphics scaling on the 3D models is far more important.
And as to ground combat? Really I think it's okay. For the most part. I think space needs serious scaling down. The thickness of beam array "beams" is so wide it obscures a lot of your screen. It makes things cluttered and hard to see. Screenshots I take while firing beams should look majestic... but instead look comical.
However, those are issues for another thread.
The 3D scaling of weapons is unrelated and IMO one of the top visual priorities in the game ("one of"... not "the"...).
Some rifles and pistols are worse offenders than others.
However, I have GOT to say that the new plasma rifles (The ones that use the visualization of the Shotgun, it would seem) Are actually a bit TOO SMALL. They simply don't look substantial, and to be honest, I'm not a big fan of their look anyhow.
In any case, there should be a mild down scaling of most weps.

I have spoken. This thread may be closed now.
