Thus far, all my 5 toon are using "authentic" gear. Even though each toons are doing the various rep systems, no rep gear has been installed on any starships yet.
Note: I find that Romulan starships are under powered (because 40 power points are devoted to singularity abilities). I have decided to give the free Ambassador Support Cruiser Retrofit a green paint job and install plasma weapons. However, before changing the default gear that came with the cruiser I accidentally brought it into ISE. I had forgotten to switch back to my Ha'nom... I only blew up twice. Not a bad way to break in a new ship I suppose.
I always try to incorporate energy and kinetic weapons on my ships.
So not always phasers on Starfleet ships, but i don't care TBH.
Phasers just suck compared to other energy types IMO.
My goal is not to break 20 or 30K DPS anyways, i prefer utility over pure DPS.
For the rest of the gear, i don't care how a set or some consoles are called, if it works i'll use it.
Ships in STO aren't made very authentic anyways. Ships being put into the wrong category and other ships being made completely wrong and so on.
It should be Cryptics goal to encourage players to use classic Weapon/ship combinations, but they do the exact opposite.
"...'With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured...the first thought forbidden...the first freedom denied--chains us all irrevocably.' ... The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged. I fear that today--"
- (TNG) Picard, quoting Judge Aaron Satie
In principle, my Starfleet toons have canon starships and use phaser/photon/quantum weaponry, but I do use Cryptic's 25th century refit skins (often mixed with original parts) to portray refits which are headcanonical upgraded. So, my exploration cruiser uses quantums for example while my Klingon commands a non-.canon design (Mogh) but with disruptor weaponry and the bio-torp (green torps are canon )
Whenever I change that equipment behaviour I state a reason for doing so in the captain's log/character bios. For example, the Nebula my sci has is fitted with proton/antiproton weaponry for certain reasons. Once that "assignment" ends it will be changed to regular gear.
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
Nope, not at all. Mainly because I care about what works best rather than what is authentic.
EDIT
Correction, my rom toon is sort of authentic in that she uses rom plasma DHCs on her fleet mogai and my kdf eng is authenticish in that she uses disruptor DHCs on her Fleet Tork, but has a transphasic cluster torp on there as well.
Disruptor faw to replicate the many guns on the ship (dbbs) with csv'ed rear turrets to add even more firepower visuals
spread plasma torpedos to replicate the scims many, many launchers
scorpions as hangar fodder (working slowly through rom rep)
Add to that all three consoles and it looks pretty awesome; flying cloaked before unleashing hell via its fire-whilst-cloaked console
Of course, most look down on the noob using the tharalon cannon, but if its a canon-ish build, you -have- to unleash the tharalon (t5 QA and secondary shields)...I just wish its bite was better for the risk involved (of course that could be as I need to use more part gen)
My scimitar uses disruptor cannons and is overpowered.... Has shields while cloaked and Can still attack while in cloak... Pretty much authentic. If you enjoy playing "authentic" ships would recommend the startreck battles thread/channel out, great group of guys even if the do go out of the way to handicap themselves (by flying authentic ships).

Not as bad as me. I once jumped into a PvP queue in a runabout.
I like to use whatever the factions energy type is
But when it comes to torpedo warheads I'm much more changable, but then thats how torpedoes with variable payloads worked in the shows so I guess its still authentic
These are the Voyages on the STO forum, the final frontier. Our continuing mission: to explore Pretentious Posts, to seek out new Overreactions and Misinformation , to boldly experience Cynicism like no man has before.......
My ships and gear are every bit as authentic as one might expect in a Starfleet in which a green lieutenant, fresh out of the Academy, is given command of a starship...
