In the last few updates to STO, we have been getting mechanics from Neverwinter. The new crafting system is basically Neverwinters. Now in the new Neverwinter module, two new zen store items were added, for 5,000 zen, you can buy tokens to finish off their version of the reputation system.
Do you guys/gals/ think that this is going to come with Delta Rising and become the norm for Cryptic's games? PWE's gaming model isn't grindfest, but to heavily monetize everything, including the most trivial of systems.
I predict the game will be heavily monetized some more, yes. But I also think in turn, it will continue to be heavily time-gated.
There are too many precedents that have already been set, and the game appears to continue to follow the pay4convenience trend. There's no reason for me to believe it will change.
I do not think I would follow NW's development decisions too closely and anticipate everything there making its way into STO in some way, but I do think it can be used as a good indicator of just how many suggestions PWE has issued Cryptic on where to go with monetization.
I think I would like this. I'm kind of tired of all the grinds. If there was a way to pay-off reputation projects with ZEN. Or even better, fleet projects - I would seriously consider it.
I'm more afraid of the possibility of the devs inserting their promo 'code' fests that NW has been conducting over there. The ones that are so ridiculously time sensitive, that only peeps within a 5 to 10 minute time frame window (it feels like,) can get the special items that the NW devs feel like coming out with. The ones being those that you're supposed to insert as a Redeem Code deal, yet NEVER work, as far as I have attempted to try, over in NW. MY waking hours heavily affected by my night job, likely the primary boohoo cause, but whatever...
I'm not sure how such would be implemented here in STO, but I can tell yah, from my own experience, it all has been AGGRAVATING. (And put in all Caps to not be mistaken, foo shoo.) Enough that I left NW for feeling 'in some way', cheesed out of limited pixelated stuff. Hopefuly by gawd, that whole bit, wont come here to STO. I don't feel the STO community deserves to be treated like that. It's bad enough with some of the decisions lately, such as removing Exploration clusters, with no replacement, and the lack of the hourly events, in favor of HARD to access 'new' versions, that make for colorful metaphors in the Devs collective direction. And so on...
That's not surprising. To be quite truthful, Cryptic could use a new monetization designer (or more). The current monetization strategy for their games might be successful from a business standpoint, but the player retention incentive could use some work.
If I had the credentials and lived in the area, it might actually be an interesting challenge to tackle. Someone with a keen insight to player demographics and being able to balance the ability to make money while simultaneously keeping players interested and engaged in the f2p business model.
Having that kind of power and burden on your shoulders couldn't be easy for any person.
After thinking about it, Cryptic has put a price tag on their adventure zones. Technically, players do not have to pay for content, but now they are given the option. Games like WOW, where they have expansions the size of STO released, it is understandable to want the players to experience the new content, but in this instance, Cryptic is saying that one of their adventure zones (three areas, a new dungeon, and five traits) are worth the equivalent of STO when it first launched.
Hmm ... not sure what to make of this ... .
To me this looks like either a mutated version of Leviathan 99's suggestion that they hire a sociologist for helping to understand the player mindset, or ... the glowing eye / mystical aura bits that they added to the Lockboxes are not doing their job and Lockbox use is still on the downward spiral .

They should instead spend that money on doing this, and create bitcoin out of thin air.
It's the same basic concept, but would probably work better for them.

Speechless.

Why, exactly?

Well..you expect them to make it 100% free? Games would die in less than a year..

More like they put a premium price tag on their ships and now it's no longer a reliable income so it's time to diversify .
