I've found it hard to use escort or scout ships - because I never really know where I'm aiming. Cannons shoot forward in a limited arc - and many times I can get disoriented. If a simple crosshair was added simply showing what direction the front center of the ship is facing - then it would be much much easier for all players to use cannons. Just a toggle in the options to turn this feature on and off.
Not sure that would really help in a 3d space where your camera isn't even bound to the ship (Think StarFox 64, but worse!!!). A better idea would be to have an option to anchor the camera into an over the shoulder (Nacelle?) perspective. Same for over the side, too, to make broadsiding easier (i.e. not ridiculously awkward)

I thought we already had that? My camera follows my ship,... unless I accidentally hit the X key. When that happens, hitting X again, resets it. My normal view is back to front, right over the top of my hull. I see, where my front arc is pointing.
As for the OP, in a situation where you can unbind your view from your ship position, I'm afraid, like the previous poster, a cross hair isn't really going to help.

What would be useful? You know those weapon arc overlays that appear when you hover over a weapon? How about the option to leave those on permanently instead of having them vanish anytime you move the mouse away?
Actually I like the idea of a toggle-able ghost reticle showing the ships direction of travel, not some garish 3d object impairing the view just a faint crosshair, it wouldn't point in the cameras direction it would point in the direction the ship is actually going and it makes more sense than much of the graphic nonsense we have thrown at us.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
All of that just gives you approximations, what would be cool would be an actual ADI so that you would know for certain that you are lining up that narrow angled gun to shoot at where you want it to shoot not where you hope its going to shoot in the heat of battle. We a flying ships in the early 25th century with the weapon aiming capabilities of the late 17th century, it all adds to the feeling that the whole space flight aspect of the game is half done.

I was thinking about it too. Would be helpful.

I somewhat like this idea, but I would modify it. Rather than a crosshair, which I could very easily lose amongst all the other graphic wizardry, I would make it much larger, perhaps even a circle outlining the full 45 degree arc. Everything within that circle could be hit by the DHCs, and everything outside could not.
In the meantime, I'm using a KCB as a laser pointer to find my target's position.
