A lot of the hatred, so to speak, is fairly recent, after god knows how long of klingon players endlessly complaining about everything Fed. Like seriously it used to be you couldn't go an hour without a new thread about how the feds were getting this or that, or how the feds are babies, or how the feds suck so much from the KDF players.
The entire atmosphere proved to be incredibly toxic, particularly when certain fleets started to breath their own fumes, believe their own propaganda/RP, and generally throw away any regard for making the game a fun or at least respectful experience for all.
That's probably the number one reason why I stopped playing my Klingon toon.
Recently, a fleet that shall remain nameless basically had the past year and a half of their actions crash down around them, spawning numerous forum threads, anti-fleet actions, and putting them into a position they had so gleefully put others not very long ago.
That fleet seems to have noticed that at some point they actually became the bad guys, not the heroes of their own story, and I think are currently under orders to not actually talk any more shut ingame because almost every time they've done so in the past while it has been to make the game incredibly toxic and demeaning.
I don't hate the KDF as a whole, and I don't hate players for playing on the KDF side. I do however have a profound dislike for players who use the antagonistic PVP nature of the KDF faction as an excuse to be an immense buttocks to everyone they meet and in the worst ways possible.
All I can say is I love pvp and on here I love doing it once in awhile but there is some hard facts you have to remember when you come to this game. For one this game has never been a pvp game it just has the ability to fight against another player but has never been marketed or promised to be anything more than a pve game.
im not sure where this myth originated, but it is clearly not true.
2008-2009:
"The universe of Star Trek Online is shaped and changed by the actions of the players. The Federation and the Klingon Empire will be competing for influence and resources throughout the galaxy and players can influence the results through PvP battles and a system we're calling Competitive PvE." [ie kerrat]
"There will be PvP in STO. PvP will be consensual. If you don't want to do it, you will never have to."
"In general, theres more PvP involvement on the Klingon side of the game."
"Yes! We plan on shipping with the ability to play as Federation and play on the Klingon side. The Klingon game play is going to be drastically different to the Federation game play. It's going to be a lot more focused on PvP; their advancement is a little bit different - it is not a full-on story-driven game like the Federation."
"...Episodes are just one of the ways to progress in the game. You can gain similar rewards by engaging in PvP or exploring Star Clusters."
"Your Klingon Captain can be a Science, Engineering or Tactical officer. However, they must advance through PvP, as they will not have access to the same amount of player-vs.-environment content as Federation players at launch."
pvp was clearly marketed as huge part of sto (particularly for the kdf faction) before the game was even in beta. obviously they lost their way and allowed pvp (and the kdf) to languish, but to maintain that pvp was an afterthought or somehow not an big part of the plan and the marketing hype is a bit disingenuous.
is it any wonder kdf pvpers harbour such negativity about the current state of the faction and the state of pvp?

Exactly. Look further at the game mechanics. Of what use are SNB, the Elachi black ball, or the Fluidic Phase Decoupler in PvE? Why would the developers continue to market high-end escorts and sci ships that aren't necessary to complete ISE 14,000 times? Even as it is allowed to atrophy, the PvP side of the game is still marketed towards PvP'ers in terms of powers and equipment, mostly in forms requiring RL cash or significant grind hours. I'm not of a mind to think that Cryptic has deliberately set out to kill PvP as I think they realise that PvP'ers spend a good deal of money for people requiring a minimum of content. I just think that they're happy taking our money without spending much in the way of developing new PvP-oriented content or balancing/testing.
Is that the Development Staff eventually felt that the KDF (Thanks to an out cry of KDF players that were probably also fed) Needed Story content..which took years in its self to fully flesh out.. and even to this day doesn't always feel fully fleshed out..
Then the true start to the nail in the coffin of the KDF's PVP life span.. was Fed vs Fed queue.
The moment they did that... Poof..
In this day and age.. PVP is ruled by a cool down war..
Either its Aux 2 Bat + Tech doffs...
Or its now the Swapping of the Cooled down Consoles.. (Something that, to me, feels like an Exploit, because why else would they add that 30 sec cool down if they wanted you to be able to do it? Not to mention your not able to do it in combat..)
You would think that if something was frowned upon, it wouldn't get used, even by the elite PVPers.. and if witnessed, would be shunned for doing so. Yet in the current PVP.. it seems like we've given up trying to take the high road.. and are now in the hunt for every possible advantage we can find.. Even if it bends the rules to a near breakable way..
But what do I know? I still enjoy trolling with a Sci BoP That can't get a kill to save its life.
You think that your beta test was bad?

I can't speak to a hated for the KDF, but I can relay what I've experienced. I don't really have loyalty to either faction. I have both Fed and Klink characters and I like them both equally. In that spirit when I fly around in places like Ker'rat if I see one side is really outnumbered. I'll jump on the other faction and try to even the odds. It's not really fun partaking in a curb stomp when its 10 against 1.
What I have noticed in these little engagements is that if I'm on my Klingon character and I kill fedside people they don't really say much of anything at all. On the other hand if I kill klinks with my fed I will get nasty whispers about how much I suck and my ship sucks and something about my mother lol. So honestly I see more hatred from the Klingon side against the feds then the other way around. Now I'm sure some feds hate the kdf I'm just relaying my own experience.
Additionally, in the few klingon fleets that I've been in the conversation inevitably turns into those stupid feds they all suck...etc etc. While the fed fleets I've been in basically have nothing to say at all about the klingons, good or bad.
Meh, Feds Sucking is a real thing and part of an ancient tradition of Trek gaming that predates STO by over 20 years. In every factionally-segregated Trek game with PvP, the Feds have ALWAYS been the noobiest faction. It's not even an STO thing. It dates way, way back, before we even had graphics.
I would argue that it is itself part of a wider tradition where players of the protagonist faction always have an average quality lower than that of the antagonist faction.
