As I heard a guy in Hydrophobia once say, "I only have 2 balls, and neither of them are crystal." LOL. Nevertheless, I bet he'd be able to predict, with 100% certainly, that this thread will be locked very soon. :P

I guess he wasn't Tholian. Lol, then again, a Tholian would probably die from this.

Exactly how does pouring ice water over your head make money appear in the lab's bank account? You want to help cure ALS? Write a check.
Lol except most of the people doing this are also donating money, and everyone who does it nominates more people to do it. By making this a social media thing they have basically gotten the attention of 90% of the wired world.
1) as others have said, this has brought attention and a lot of support for ALS. Which my mother in law has so I'm happy to see this kind of "promotion" being done to get the people talking about a serious terminal disease.
2) Moved to ten forward :P

I think it's pretty unfortunate to see people snubbing something that has brought in such results.

I'm of several minds about this.
1. It's unequivocally good that donations have spiked.
2. It should NOT take some lame social-media weaksauce challenge to get people to be charitable, especially to a cause like ALS research.
3. While the social-media stupid makes my brain hurt, this HAS gotten results. In an ideal world, however, people would just give money to causes like this without having stupid social-media stunts to egg them on.
So. Happy about the funds being raised for such a noble cause, but despairing for humanity.
If the social media aspect offends you, write the check and don't do the challenge, but I don't see any downside at all to the challenge for those who do it. The key will be to find ways to sustain the momentum this has started--but this has the benefits, for instance, of adding to the ALS Association's mailing lists, and giving them further ideas about how to target their outreach.

But we live in the real world, not the ideal one. So since this has gotten results, we can now look forward to "Ice swimming for AIDS," "Bungie Jumping for [pick your favorite type of] cancer," "Wet t-shirt challenge for Multiple Sclerosis," "Belly-flopping for concussion awareness," and it's only going to spiral downward from there as long as anyone thinks there's money to be had.

In general, I agree.
The problem comes, however, when I get challenged to do the stupid stunt despite having already given a not inconsiderable portion of my meager funds to the cause in question. When I try to explain my situation, I get called a coward and get told that I must not care about people dying slow, horrible deaths and get doxxed on Tumblr.
It's happened before. So do please forgive me for my strong dislike of social media stunts.
You need to film and post yourself doing the challenge in order to challenge others.
On that note, since this is a STO forum, I would hope to see Trekkies in uniform doing it. It would help donations and would help to bring more light to STO.
Imagine Taco doing this. It would have a frakkin spaceship going over his head at the end! EPIC!

At least Trendy and Smirk should do this during the next live stream.
It raises awareness so that more people do write checks.
And ALS has what to do with STO? Think before you post.
And writing checks to ALS research does more for ALS than stupid "America's Funniest Home Videos" grade stunts. Once again, think before you post.

This AFV stunts have already raised millions for ALS
The only thing I agree with you is that this should be in Ten Forward

Actually the guy who started it just recently died from ALS.
CRUISERS NEED A 206% HULL BUFF
Well, there's your cure for ALS right there.
Dude. That's not cool. Not cool at ALL.

The ALS Association has publicized the results they have gotten from this--and the jump in donations is really mindblowing.
