As the title suggests, I have some questions abour fleets and whether or not they are worth it:
1. Is fleet membership typically restricted to one toon/faction, or can multiple characters on the same account be involved in a fleet?
2. Is it possible to leave a fleet if membership isn't working out?
It's a little complicated to answer because some fleet "entities" operate more than one fleet.
example. I am second in command of such an operation. we have two fleets, one on the Fed side for feds and Fed Ally Roms, the "Soulfire Consortium", and the other on the KDF side for KDF and KDF allied Rom, the Soulfire Warriors".
Even though the game considers both fleets to be separate, we think of ourselves as one larger entity.
There are also fleets that operate more that one fleet on the same faction. These are often to allow for the fact a fleet has hit the membership cap (500 last time I checked). Or even a "Minor Leauge" fleet for newer players/members who eventually might make it to the top fleet.
There are also fleets that only operate on one side or the other. My fleet is allied with such a fleet that only operates on the KDF side. We've opened our doors to their member's Fed and Fed-Rom toons.
for number 2, if leaving a fleet was not an option, Cryptic would have a lot of problems on their hands.
As to their worth.. quick way to find groups to run content. Make friends. Have ready access to some of the best gear in the game. There is a reason you can only get Elite gear from fleet stores, and why it reuires player input into fleet projects (the basis for the rep system) to be able to earn the abilty to buy them.
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
What's my position?
That people should know what they're screaming about!

Thanks for the replies! The info you're giving me is definitely helping me make an informed decision on whether to join a fleet, or remain a FTP loner.
I was also curious about how much commitment fleets typically want from their members (I will be going back to school next month, so I won't be online quite so much), but I imagine that differs from fleet to fleet.
all membership polices are set by the individual fleet's leaders.
Some don't care, some are really strict, and some are willing to make exceptions.
Some will have FC quotas or mandatory activities. Some will just "hey you're on, that's fine"

^ That's pretty much the gist of it. It varies from fleet to fleet.
Most fleets, however, do expect you to donate resources to fleet projects before they'll allow you to use the fleet stores to buy fleet gear. Usually they'll expect you to hit a certain one-time goal on the project leaderboards like 50,000-150,000 credits earned.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
the fleet I am in also runs a fed and kdf version, with a custom chat channel to coordinate and hang out. It works pretty well but the kdf fleet is mostly alts and suffers a bit on development. /shrug
I highly recommend being in a fleet; the gear is nice and if the people are decent the social aspect is also nice.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! You have all done a lot to clarify my questions about fleets, and give me a better idea about the benefits involved.
Consider this last post as an advertisement: if there are any fleets that are (1) big on roleplaying, and (2) don't have too heavy a commitment schedule, then I'd definitely be interested.

1) fleets are divided by faction, but members can put as many alts in as they like
2) yes, there is a leave button in the roster
Fleets can support Alts, but in reality this is a policy that individual Fleets decide upon, and is not universal...
