Say something positive about: The Undiscovered Country

Well, unlike the previous one I did, Insurrection, being my least favorite, now Undiscovered Country is my personal favorite, and I'm honestly curious what folks think about it.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

Saw it in the movie theater when it came out. A bit cheezy but I liked it. Left the theater sad knowing it was the last one. :(

an investigation, a diplomatic nightmare, a botched rescue, a friend and his ship coming to help, an arrogant enemy commander who wont pipe down, a treacherous friend. a race against a deadline to find the killers of a larger problem.

who wouldnt be interested in the film :P. next best thing to mass effect and fighting harbinger and his minions.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Its the best ST Movie ever with having a perfect balance of great story, acting/character play & a good deal of action that matters and is not just there for the sake of fancy pewpew. IMHO of course :)

For me it ties with WoK for best Trek movie. It is so well constructed and in the battle with Chang, keeps the tension flowing until the moment Kirk says "Fire!"
I ask nothing but that you remember me.

Ah Undiscovered Country.. There are so many good things to say about the movie. It is the Swan Song to the TOS cast and done very well from a conceptual point and executed well on most counts. This one did not need to be a big action movie to work and since the cast was aging they had to rely on comedy and this worked for the most part. The big action sequence towards the end was tense.

The last scene was especially sad and cheery at the same time and it gives me such nostalgia and feelings of being a kid again.

This one is still number 4 for me because I still rank Wrath of Khan, First Contact. and Voyage Home higher on the list.

Exactly but for me the kicker was the last scene.. not for tension but for all of us knowing that this is it this crew is done...

Wrath of Khan is my personal fav,but knowing that The Undiscovered Country is the final film w/ the TOS crew and the last film before G. Roddenberrys death , makes it especially poinent (spelling ? ).....for me.

Saying something good about this movie is like shooting fish in a barrel with a mini gun!

This must be the easiest of the lot, I mean come on, it had Christopher freaking Plumber as the bad guy, a very good story, the last time we saw the entire crew together, Worf's grandfather, some good comedy moments, did I say Christopher freaking Plumber!!!

We saw grouchy-3-months-from-retirement-Kirk getting woken by Spock in the middle of the night over some radiation and Chekov in the centre seat with a hangover.
    I need a beer.

Despite the cheesy lines, the damn Shaksphere Klingon, and an obvious plot error* it turned out ok. It let us see the inside of a D7 and that's all I got.

    *Here is the plot error.
So we have a Starfleet admiral and a Shaksphere Klingon that are on opposite sides that are working together to start a war with each other. Seems logical:rolleyes:.

It gave me the best movie-going experience I ever had. Premier night, last seat in the house, literally, and I didn't care. I strongly suspect every last person in the theater was a die-hard trekkie, and we were all completely engaged in the film: cheers, gasps, laughter, tears when the crew made their final goodbyes. Yet all from a crowd that knew when to make noise and when to be silent. Golden. I've never had another film experience like it.

Thats... not really a plot error. It would not surprise me if a lot of current and early past wars had similar backgrounds. Another point to love this Trek movie; no fear to shy away from showing mad warmonger motivations. At least those in this movie had a tiny bit of dignity & honor as misguided as they where.

Chang has so much great dialogue.... "Tickle us, do we not laugh? Prick us, do we not bleed? Wrong us shall we not revenge?"

Although I think Spock had the best line in the film .... "I've been dead before."

Naw, his best line was "If I were human, I believe my response would be, 'Go to hell.' If I were human."

I thought the Rura Penthe scenes kinda scrambled the pacing (could fast forward through those bits without feeling like I'd missed anything); but otherwise it's one of the best Trek films they ever made.

The only bad thing about the film is the mysterious emission seeking torpedo that was on the Enterprise at the end, despite it meaning to be on the Excelsior.

Other than that it is THE best ST film (beating FC into 2nd place).

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Me, I think I liked that Shakespeare quote a bit better in Data's (admittedly paraphrased) version.

"If you prick me, do I not... leak?" :D

Well, the torpedo is where it is. Remember, it was cobbled together from a regular torpedo and an astrometric probe.

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.p3OEBPD6HU3QI.jpg

It was made using the emission seeking equipment that the Excelsior was using for its Beta Quadrant mission.

I think he means that it was actually Excelsior who had the equipment for tracking gaseous anomalies. The beginning of the film shows them doing just that when the Praxis shockwave hits them.

I have mixed feeling about that plot error, myself. I know it makes more rational sense for Excelsior to be the one making the torpedo since they had the equipment. But for once I agree with 'the Shat' that the Enterprise shouldn't be saved by its rival/replacement in its final battle.

It's plausible the Enterprise could have been on a similar assignment. IIRC it was never mentioned what the Enterprise had been doing prior to being ordered to escort Gorkon to Earth. There are a whole lot of gaseous anomalies out there.... stands to reason the Federation would have more than one ship studying them.

Maybe it was R&D weekend? :P

Postitive about TUC? Probably my second favourite of the movies. It has a good mix of humour, supsense and intrigue. The battle scene at the end was to the point, and accomplish a "good fight" without excessive levels of sfx, in comparison to the more recent movies.

Plus - phasering cookware to prove a point was amusing.

Great line, though I've always laughed at another that shows his ironic humor: "There's an old Vulcan proverb, 'Only Nixon could go to China'." :)
