Avenger vs Tempest

What should I buy the Avenger or the Tempest im a Tac captain and im in need of ship that has better firepower than any fed ship and it survives an whole elite STF without taking too much damage. That ship would be the Avenger or the Tempest.

I have the Avenger battlecruiser and I don't regret it. It's a good ship, does plenty of damage, can survive quite a bit, etc. Overall, though, I would estimate the Tempest is better and can survive just as much.
EDIT: Full disclosure: I don't have the tempest. I've seen some of what it can do, though, and have reviewed the stats a few times.
I have both, I use the tempest for pvp because I prefer cannon escort dogfights
I use the avenger for pve because it's 8 weapons and has more survival prowess.
I'd go with the avenger if only flying pve but the tempest if doing pve and pvp

Tempest gets access to APO3, with Commander tac.
Commander engineering is lowered to LtComm.
Sci stations remain the same. Same amount of buffs for each career. Avenger is a bit more tanky stat wise, but turns way slower. Has 5 forward facing guns, but imo Tempest wins out. It uses those 4 fore much faster. And can heal as strong as the Avenger does.
hell yeah the avenger works with phasers. I use the elite fleet phasers accx2 with one dbb and BO3. it is a killer.
This is the hilarious thing with the Tempest.
It can be a dual LtCdr ENG "Escort." It has 7 regular weapon slots instead of a Cruiser's 8, but it has the all-important +15 Weapons Power as an Escort. You can be a superior beamboat than other Cruiser Beamboats

The only wrong ship is a ship that isn't being flown. In other words, what do you feel more comfortable flying?
Don't fall into the Tac must fly this, Sci must fly that category. You can't go wrong with either. Just look at the stats of both ships and find what YOU like about them. If you don't like it, then buy the other ship later.
Don't force yourself into one or the other.

I don't have the Tempest yet, but a friend of mine does and he loves it.
That is a very quick mock-up of the Patrol Escort I did. Not much, but it gives some type of idea.
The avenger is pretty tanky and you can sit in a group of lesser npcs and they'll never kill you. Plus with five fwd guns it will melt anything that it points it's nose at into space dust in seconds.
Only side of it I don't like is it's limited science scope, it's always nice to have to odd extra heal or crowd control skill for that vital moment in an stf.
That brings me on to the tempest. It can be anything you want it to be. A canon heavy face melting escort, a BFAW A2B monster or even a grav well throwing heavy science ship. It is so versatile you can do what you like and change it if you don't like it.
I'd go with the tempest for the sheer versatility of it. Unless you are happy with cruiser play styles in which case the avenger will do you well.
That said, the Avenger is a solid boat. It can dish out the damage and take it all the same. The 5 forward slots make it a very nice cannon boat, but the lower turn rate can make it a bit frustrating trying to use them in places like the space BZ.
I did fit my Tempest with phasers to maximize on the aft gun and the nadion bomb. So far I have not been disappointed with doing that. There's also other flavors of phasers out now, so you can pick whatever type suits you. I use traditional phasers because of the color lol.
In the end I felt like I had to make some concessions with the Avenger to get a working build on it where I didn't need to with the Tempest. I also find the Tempest to be better in the looks department than the Avenger. It just has a sleek swooping feel to it. But that's just my own personal taste. I'd have to throw my vote to the Tempest over the Avenger.
