I wanted to try my hand at a little demo record action.
I've tried fraps, but I really want access to the camera view components,
just so I could try a trailer type video, short and sweet.
I looked
here, but was kind of vague, then found
this old thread,
really good as far as "what to do", but it doesn't seem to work for me.
Could it be because my game is in the Steam folder?
(Even though I use a shortcut directly to sto's exe bypassing steam?)
Or has this demo record (playback) option been disabled in some way?
I can record a sequence, and find the file, and change the shortcut(2) target as
the forum post suggested,
but it just opens the game to the enter password screen.
Running winxp pro sp3 if that helps.
Would appreciate any help on this...
Thanks
ps. Tried that
tool, but get an "unable to find runtime" error on install.
Installed
runtime, got same error on install.

Thanks, I've bookmarked that tutorial.
But that is the tool I've already tried to install, (v2.9.6.0)
Exact error I get is "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application".

have you tried doing it from the command line, navigate to your STO install folder and type in "gameglient -demoplay (demoname)"?
have you recorded the stuff you want to access in game??
You need to run the normal client... Steam or no steam...
When you want to record something just simply type:
/demorecord
or
/demorecord "Name"
This will initiate the demo recording sequence... you'll know it's recording when you see "Demo Recording" in your HUD
To stop the Demo Record, just warp/log/change to a different map and it'll stop or type
/demorecordstop
Note: The longer you record the longer it will take for the file to be ready.
aka a 5 min demo record will save instantly (depending on your pc)
a 1 hr demorecord will take longer to save, which will seem like your pc froze, but just let it do it's thing...
Once you've done this...
A file will be saved, and if you use the Demorecord Launcher Tool, you'll see a list of the saved file, just click on the file you want to manipulate, launch it... and you'll be editing your way into STO's Demorecord Engine
Hoped I was able to help...
TL;DR
/demorecord - to start
/demorecordstop - to stop
Demo record launcher to launch file
Thanks tekehd,
You managed to clarify in one line,
(what I couldn't figure out what the wiki was trying to tell me!)
Yes! Just got it to work for the first time.
This is a great start to getting my foot in the door.
Even if I can't get Rachel Garrets STO Demo Launcher tool to work,
I can at least I can get started on a video.
Thanks again!

A runtime error is usually caused by you not having the correct version of runtime which is a windows update. Go onto Microsoft's website and download any updates, theses updates are usually optional updates so make sure you check the optional ones. That should fix the runtime error, if it doesn't its very possible that the program is not compatible with windows xp, as windows xp is becoming obsolute at this point.
Praetor of the -RTS- Romulan Tal Shiar fleet!
Thanks kirstiein,
That did the trick!
Although there didn't seem to be any updates directly related to direct x
or runtime, there was a new one for silverlight, and a few for older versions of
net framework I hadn't downloaded before, because of there size and they
didn't really seem necessary.
(Sometimes one update too many messes with my pc, sound card, etc).
Now everything works!
(As far as winxp compatability, I'm pretty sure the author of the tool originally built it for xp,
and upgraded her os around the 4th build to win7, if I remember correctly).
Anyways, Thanks again kirstiein, and everyone else for their help.
Very much appreciated!
Cheers,
Steve
