Hello, as my KDF tac toon is nearing lvl 50, I hve started to shink about a ship to use. As I prefer beams and cruisers my choices are:
Mogh battlecruiser - never used one, not even the Avenger, but on paper it looks good.
Bortasq battlecruiser - not sure which one to use, but the sci variant with sensor analysis looks also good. But the turn rate is, well, really low. And I do not know if the set is worth it or if I should take just that one ship.
JHDC - this ship has been in my inventory since I bought it a sale for 400 lobi about a year ago. The only problem is that I will most definitely never have JHAS so my pets selection is limited. And it is also surpassed by the Xindi carrier now.
Which one of these three would you recommend to use? Thanks.
Because it has some versatility to it, can run beam arrays or cannons effectively with or without A2B, I recommend the Mogh. It's can do great DPS in either configuration with the right BO setup and other goodies.
Personally, I find it does better with beam arrays with an A2B setup than without, though others may have had different results.
Mogh is nice, but only 4 tac consoles, its primary draw is the 5/3 frontal assault weapon layout. Borts are nice ships, very nice. 2/3 consoles is worth having IMHO. But buying the package is pricy. Still with the pack you can "swap consoles" around by swapping the ships. The tack bort with 5 tac consoles and 2 piece set should put out very solid dps in a durable platform. Any of the 3 can slot a high end sci officer in the universal. I would not sweat the slow, its not hard to get a workable turn rate these days, and these are broadside beam array type boats...
The JHDC is a nice ship but it offers little over the above and you would be better off selling it IMHO. Pros: its "free" since you have it in-hand, and its a carrier, so its dps is "5/3" performance with even other types of elite fighters. Also it gains a bonus with the JH set, so 200 lobi upgrade to the set and a nasty polaron build is possible. Cons... weak fighters die too fast, and its officer seating is inflexible.
So my thoughts... condensed...
mogh if you want to use DBB frontal assault.
bort if you want beam arrays. Yes, its possible to make a DBB ship of it but you probably need multiple turn consoles for that.
JHDC if you like the idea of pets and a polaron build. Remember the JH shield is lacking a bit so the set idea is questionable.
I have a JHDC and if I had your choice today I would use the tactical bort probably.
Thank you all for your input. It seems that I will take the Bortasq command variant as it has sensor analysis skilll. The JHDC is free, but without JHAS it is not what it could be.
At L50, if you REALLY hate being able to move, you can get a Vo'Quv, which gives you sensor analysis, AND a good selection of Carrier pets available to make up for not being able to manuever
I kinda wish it did, so that carriers become the kinda-sorta KDF equivalent to science vessels.
They already get subsystem targeting and have the 3/3 weapon layout of science vessels. EDIT And the commander sci boff slot. It's 3/4 of the way there.

you must be the guy i was trying to talk out of the borty in chat last night. before you grab that borty, bear in mind that the only person in the thread to recommend it confessed to not even using it themselves.
95% chance you are going to regret that purchase.
Beam boat cruiser, eh? Fleet K'tinga retrofit. I much prefer to fly my Fleet K'tinga retrofit than my Fleet Tor'khat. Much more fun to play.
I hope you enjoy whatever you choose.
OP should also consider adding the Fleet Negh'var to their shopping list. It can support A2B beam builds just fine and it's super-tanky and hard to kill.
Fleet Negh'Var? Hell, a mirror Negh'var has awesome hull stats as it stands! Fleet is better, yes, but for a very close second try the mirror. Save some money and fleet modules for something else, later.
Fleet K'Tinga Retro is a great ship and I love it, but it's the red-headed step child of fleet retrofits and has been dumped on by Cryptic in terms of stats and performance compared to EVERY other fleet ship and every other ship that costs fleet modules. You really have to love the ship to go that route (which I do), but there are better options.
Do NOT get the borty. You WILL be disappointed in the long run. You WILL find it annoying, un-fun, and just painful to fly. It has too many negative aspects and no benefits. The consoles are TRIBBLE, so just pretend you're going to set the ship up without any of them. Then look at any other ship you'd set up. That other ship will be better.
Go with the other ship. Trust me.
For a fun and relatively cheap test-drive of another ship type you might want to branch out into, look at the mirror qin, mirror somraw, mirror negh'var, and mirror hegh'ta to see what floats your boat. All can be found on the exchange.
Follow-up question: He says he bought JHDC on sale for 400 lobi. When was this? What kind of event, and will any more be coming? I hadn't heard of it, but took several long breaks from the game over the years.

I sadly have to agree. I have a Tac Borty and I've tried, tried to like that ship, but the unfortunate truth is that there's nothing the Bortasqu' can do that some other KDF ship can't do better. Between that and the fact that I can go out grocery shopping while waiting for the ship to turn around means it stays in dry-dock 99% of the time.

It was about 3/4 year ago, there was a 50% discount on all lobi ships so I took it. Has been in my bank ever since, transferred from one character to another. It is just now with my KDF tac that I have started to rhink about opening the box even without having JHAS for pets. Unfortunately I have no idea if that offer will be repeated.
Thank you all for the input. I have decided not to take the Bortasqu then. However there are really few Klingon cruisers with 4 tac console slots and a lt.cmdr tac slot. Actually there is only fleet Tor'Kah and fleet Mogh.
It seems I will open that JHDC box after all. I doubt it would sell well now when there is the Xindi carrier, which is much better in every aspect. I will just have to fly it without JHAS.

Jhdc can still slot elite scorps...it's still a very nice option.
I wouldn't say the xindi carrier surpasses the jhdc. I really wouldn't...

Time will only tell!
