Taking screen shots with Mac

I am wondering if there is a way to take a screen shot on a mac in a fashion similar to the F9 manor on the PC, where the option is available to remove the HUD. Right now the only way I am able to take a screen shot is to use the Shift+command+3 combo, however it captures the HUD as well.

    Get the opensource program called Paintbrush found on sourceforge (opensource) this program is free for the Mac use that to edit our screen dump you have taken. Very simple to cut out what you want and then re-paste to a new image then save. Under Windows the free program is called Paint.Net Again Paintbrush simple to use and it's free. Use google to search for it or go to "paintbrush.sourceforge.net" Note I've not posted a link but this is what your looking for underlined.
