Hi,
Firstly want to thank everyone who responded to my previous thread. You were all very helpful, and my life has been much better - I've found my ground combat easier and less frustrating. I'm sure I'm still not doing things as good as I could... but managed to upgrade gear cheaply, changed away team composition... and doing a lot better now.
- Switched to 2 engineers (with shield heals, mortar & laser turret, drone & weapon malfunction), 1 tac, 1 science and myself ( engineer using shiewld heals and drones)
- equipped everyone with dual pistols.. they were cheap (lol 5K for purple mk xi guns - other options were all 40-50K+ each)
1) Character Skill Build
Anyways, I've hit lvl 50 and still going through the Romulan part of the federation storyline. No idea if this leveling is normal, but the way I play it worked out that way. So now looking at my skills... and I realize I splashed em all over the place... and now looking to fine-tun my build somewhat. I'm also not sure whats mainly PvP orientated and not really needed.
So here's approx what my current rainbow build is.. and really needs to be changed;
http://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/?build=kamdashcurrent_0
I've tried to remember exactly what my skills are set to, what gear is equipped on both shilp and ground, etc - but I can't remember it all. So it's not 100% accurate, but it's close enough to reflect what a terrible build it is :P
A couple of things stand out for me:
- I realize I need to turf the torpedo skills, as I rely more on my 6 beam array's to do damage. I still like having the 2 torpedo's, as they do get used often enough... and atm I'm not sure I could utilize 8 beams without doing things I'm not comfy with (ie relying on batteries, or expensive as hell gear I can't afford to buy)
- for PvE, is Beam Overload or Fire at Will generally better? I tend to focus on 1 enemy at a time, even if facing groups in space... which has been working fine for me so far.
- Is Starship Inertia Dampeners (resist hold, disable & knock) useful for PvE? I know that some Romulan ships annoy me by dropping 3 tractor mines that I keep triggering... but that is mostly just annoying as the mines die fast. So wondering if putting points in here is a waste if I don't plan on PvP'ing...
- Does Starship Particle Generators beef up Aceton Beam's? I ask because I love hitting enemies with this at the initial engagement. But is it worth spending points here for just the 1 skill (albiet used on 2 BO's).
- Is subsystem repair a skill that should be used in PvE or not?
Here is an alternate possible build, assuming all above are true (ie the skills are mainly for PvP)

I know people might think I'm a bit close-minded... but I really hate using or having to rely on batteries & such to keep things going. I struggle to remember I have health & shield healing items on my captain in ground combat... and have enough trouble in space combat keeping an eye on my BO's skills and using them, don't really want to add more by having to rely on consumables just to operate better.
What I'm saying - please don't suggest investing in batteries skill, and then using a build which requires I bankrupt myself buying and using batteries :P
Also, I'm not rich. I have like 400K EC, so no way can I afford any of the ultra-rare, super expensive consoles and such (which sell for like anywhere from 500k up to millions of EC).
2) dOFF missions now at lvl 50.
Just what are the purpose do Duty Officer missions now that I'm lvl 50? By doing them I am getting expertise, which I have plenty of right now (like 170K), some EC (ok, this I need)... as well as points in that section, which will eventually level them up.
Other than the EC, I'm wondering what the point it? I know I can get titles as the different things level up... but other than the ec & Dilithium... should I stress about them?
3) Engineering, Medical & Military DO bonuses... what purpose?
These give you purchasable holograms... do these actually do anything, or just something cosmetic?
4) Is there anywhere I can look up STO abbreviations?
I ask as I have seen them all over these forums, and some of them I do understand... while some I have absolutely no idea what they are referring to - which is problematic as I'm seeing these abbreviations used in this 'newbie' forum :P
Here's 3 that spring to mind:
- DEM3
- KCB
- RSP3
I'm not sure what these refer to, 2 of them possibly BO skills, as the 3 seems to indicate they are the 3rd level of something?
5) Ground Weapons
Currently have 4 dual pistols (doing much better than the hodge-podge of mixed weapon types I have before)... but thinking maybe I should switch when I can afford to. I don't see other players using anything other than rsome form of big gun (rifles, etc).
Was thinking of going 4 blast assaults or assault miniguns or such... for the extra range over dual pistols. Biggest issue is price.. they are higher priced than the dual's were, so would be something to save for.
Does damage type matter that much in ground combat for PvE missioning? Or just grab whatever damage type I can afford?
And am I correct in thinking that the best modifiers will be along lines of crit chance & crit damage?
Well, thank you to anyone who actually read all of this and can help me out.
Edit - forgot 1 thing.
How to enable the showing of armor on ground?
I ask as I have seen ppl with their armor showing, but my armor never shows... and I'm assuming that I disabled this option somehow, or sometime in the past... and I have no idea how to re-enable it
