Build help please

Hey,

I'm a noob at this game basically, played at start, then stoped, then played a bit again, then stoped and now playing again. I have however deleted all the toons i previously had (none of them had anything worthwhile on them anyway) and started from scratch, mainly to see the entire storyline again.
I'm now at the point where i'm tier 4 in all reps, going for tier 5. The toon is a fed engineer flying around in a operations ody i bought a long time ago. What i'd like some advice with are 2 different builds (i have no interest in pvp, so please pve advice), one for a tanking Ops Ody (i can replace this with a better option further down the line) and one for a dps oriented fleet Avenger.
I intend to use romulan plasma weapons on both (and a cutting beam), would like it to be a full beam setup. I have no problem using different doffs and boffs for each ship.
Any advice/help would be appreciated. I know nothing about which doffs to use, which mods are better on a weapon, what consoles go where, etc. I'd like something that will allow to me be efficient enough, doesn't have to be the mother of all builds.

P.S. I'd like to have 6-9 points in threat control, unless it can be replaced by the cruiser command. I know there is no need for tanking in this game, but i'd still like to be able to do it.

for plasma you need to use the romulan plasma beam & console from reputation which give 7% or so boost to plasma damage.

Weapon mods depend some on your goals. Accuracy turns into crit chance once you have a 100% chance to hit the target, and helps to hit targets with high defenses, so its a win-win. As a romulan with a lot of crit chance, I like crit damage bonus, but if your crit chance is low, damage X3 has merits... it just depends but when buying expensive weapons, go for the goal you want to have later not the stats you have NOW.

A lot of people run aux to battery. With a technician officer, this lets you use officer abilities more often while having a high power level. High power levels let you use a fleet warp core and get a damage bonus. So this is a very popular build due to having all these things play off each other.

So if I were doing the avenger, I would start with something like
5 dual beam banks up front, rom rep beam aft, cutting beam aft, and say mines or something in the final aft slot. 4 fleet resist all/ turn or turn/resist or a mix of the 2 types. science console can be the romulan plasma console. 4 fleet plasma/crit consoles. Borg shield to get power from being shot. Whatever deflector/engine you like; JH engine is a good starter. Until you can get all that standard turn consoles and standard plasma consoles fill in. You can drop one fleet engineer console for a rep console if you like; the new undine turn one or any of the others that you want badly. You could drop a second one as well depending on how much you value turn rate. Theres a turn rate shield(?) or something from the solanae set.

probably run tac with team 1, faw, faw, ap beta and team 1 again for the other tac. science officer, hazard emmit and team perhaps? engineer, team, power to shields, aux to battery? universal, fill in -- he could be used to swap out to a 4/1 beam/torp up front (use rom torp or dyson gw one perhaps) with a torp spread or stay all beams and have more self healing.

active officers... technician aux to battery if you want to do that, also I like cooldown reduction on evasive manuver, and you might like to improve tac team or something defensive, and 2 more for personal flavor or double up on something.

this is just a starting point though. You will want to customize around on it to fit your style.

I am not sure how to build a pure tank. Seems like a lot of that is captain skill and gear... high hull ship, good shields, defensive officers, and your skill tree. But I don't see how you could get things to shoot you unless you can build threat greater than high end dps ally.... which I can't see doing in a defensive ship even with tanking threat captain skill. Dps makes a LOT of threat.

I would suggest parking the Oddy in favour of the free Sovi for a cruiser simply because it is more combat capable, there is also the fact that without dps you can't tank because things won't bother shooting you.

    With that in mind...
    Oddy: http://www.kaysvaultofstuff.com/odyssey.html
    Sovi: http://www.kaysvaultofstuff.com/sovereign.html
    Avenger: http://www.kaysvaultofstuff.com/avenger.html

If you want to do the tanking thing then my suggestions (from the selection above) would be...
    Sovi:-
    http://www.kaysvaultofstuff.com/general-purpose-sovi.html
    http://www.kaysvaultofstuff.com/aux2sif-sovi.html
Both give enough heals for you to tank while also giving you the ability to throw these at allies if you can't draw NPCs away.

    Avenger:-
    http://www.kaysvaultofstuff.com/beam-general-purpose-avenger.html
    http://www.kaysvaultofstuff.com/aux2sif-avenger.html
Much like the Sovi selection these give you ample self and team heals.

    I hope this helps you.
