Made 50 on my first character yesterday. My question is, I stopped after finishing the Vault mission in the Reman story arc, and I was wondering if it was worth it to complete the storyline and go through all the other missions? Or should I go right to Rep missions.
I recommend finishing the FE content. Some of the awards are pretty good. Such as the Jem'hadar Space Set from the DS9 missions.
I also recommend checking out the Foundry. Not the farm missions, though. Some of the Foundry Missions are equal if not superior to the FE content. Again, the rewards, in this case Dilithium, are good.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
This is something that really does ruin things for me.
The storyline is treated as an 'optional extra'.
midway through the 2800 series, you can still go to DS9.
I got my klingon to level50 pre LOR and never took it past 'what lies beneath' (finally did that load the last FE event) but yet he has full rep (except counter-command - only T3 there) despite being on the 2800 series now.
And worse, he's done the dyson missions already.
Why can you transwarp to Borg space if you've not unlocked the borg missions?
I would like players rank to have additional requirements for players rank. As in the episodes are locked in level-gates. Sure you could have a Fed captain, and right now do all the missions, and side missions etc. to level up. And get a level50 without ever finishing Spectres. instead, your fed Character is locked at level 19 (or maybe 24) until the end of Temporal Ambassador.
Finishing an episode is the justification for your rank increase. Heck, even integrate that into the (unreplayable) link-missions - Welcome to Spacedock, Secrets of Nimbus (although that would be better added to it, sent there as a newly minted Lt cmdr), Heading out, Venture into Deep Space, Report to Gamma Orionis.
It just makes sense - you're reassigned to a new region, because you've been promoted. Actually puts some RPG back into the game.
The fact the map is completely open (except the borg and sphere space now) to someone just starting, despite them being so new, really grates. A level15 char should not be able to go to Zeta Andromedae, or the Narendra sector.
The storyline needs to shape the map and the world. Otherwise, what's the point? it's not like it's a terribly new concept, even in 'open world games'. even GTA 3 had it way back in 03, so why can't we?

If you don't see anything appealing, and playing through a story isn't your thing, then no I guess you don't really need to do the other story missions, although I would recommend that you skip through the ones you can and play the handful that aren't skippable in order to properly unlock the Dyson Sphere zones.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
Also, remember than a few dilithium missions and some others are not available until you reach the some later episodes. I can think right now on the Defera ones, for example.
But i will recommend EVERYBODY to finish with all the FE episodes. Some of em are great and they will provide you more fun than you will expect, some others grants really interesting equipment, that you can use to replace fleet gear or reputation gear if you still didnt have any. Not to mention, episodes provide experience points, that you will require later in game as well. Besides the replay of episodes grants you as well a choice of marks or a small dilithium container.
I reached level 50 without finishing the main story missions as well. I have been slowly doing them over time but that taken brakes every now and then both my Fed and KDF toons are at the same part of the main story involving the Cardassian Struggle. The mission is Rapier. I have done the same with my recently created Rom toon which is only up to the 20th mission in the main story; Cloak & Dagger, but is currently level 43 thanks to doing foundry missions and Doff (Duty Officer) missions.
I will likely return to doing the main missions next month because I am doing two different grinds right now on all three toons. I typically try to grind at least 8k of dilithium ore on my Fed and KDF toon everyday. I try to shoot for at least 4k of dil everyday for my Rom toon since that "semi-active". I am also grinding the Risian Summer Event for Lohlunat Favors to sell on the Exchange like a lot of other people are doing. It's a good way to make ECs. I made just over 22 million ECs just on my Rom toon since the event started. However, selling prices for each favor has steadily declined since the event started; about 20k EC for each favor at the beginning to about 8.9k ECs today.
Yeah, so grind, grind, grind to be able to afford more expensive stuff on the Exchange and refining dilithium for rep gear and to trade for Zen.

Don't worry about trying to get stuff off the exchange on a new character. Focus on getting geared up and learning about everything. This will give you time to establish permanent ways of making decent and solid cash. Make sure you doff for contraband on your KDF everyday. Even with one character, it will pull some good money. If your Romulan is KDF, you can doff for contraband with them too.

Since this will be my 4th toon I am quite aware on how to make ECs in the game. However, the Risian Summer Event is simply on opportunity to make pretty easy ECs even though the value of Lohlunat Favors are falling every day. Would be nice to buy another mirror universe Negh'var battle cruiser if I can spot it selling for under 6 million ECs again.
The ECs will be used to eventually buy Mk XI and MK XII stuff as well as building up the Doff roster for that toon. My current KDF toon pulls in 30 - 50 contraband on a daily basis; however, I don't sell them. The main purpose is to use them to convert them to dilithium ore for stockpiling purposes.
My Rom is Fed aligned. I will create a Reman KDF aligned toon probably next year. Daily contraband gathering for each Fed and Rom toons range between 2 to 7.

My advise: dont sell favors now. Just save em, and when the event is over you will see how the prices start to rise (obviously because nobody can gather favors anymore). Then you can selll em at really high prices ^^. Remember, that, unless im wrong, when the event is over you can still buy stuff on Risa and rise birds, etc. so people will still searching for favors.
NEVER buy weapons with EC. That is a really bad move. I mean, unless you pay 50.000 ec for a purple weapon.. lol, and that is not going to happen. You have millions of ways to gather good weapons without wasting EC. In fact, that is one of the big purposes of the FE content. You can get far more than enough weaponry in em and you dont need any purple exchange weapon.
REMEMBER than you can replay a lot of episodes and you will gain gear fited to your level. And remember that you dont need purple equipment , specially for ground. With the gear of the episodes you have more than enough. Unless you play in elite mode, but i dont think its the case, and still, a good blue MKXI weapon is almost the same that a MKXII purple one. There is almost no difference at all. Remember this, because some people really have a obsession with purple equipment, and they dont realize the difference is almost minimum.
And if you buy things with EC, sell some contraband in the exchange, for about 400k+ each group of 10 contraband. If you do that almost everyday you will see how our EC flow raises really fast. But again, dont use that EC to buy weapons.. that is a really "noob" move (with no offense). Usually people who buy weapons in the exchange is because they cant find a specific weapon anywhere, and the exchange is the last resource they have. Or because they need a specific weapon in a specific time and they dont have time / they dont want to waste time replaying another episode or doing something else. But bying weapons in the exchange for a regular basis.. NOOOOOO. Its a really bad move. And its not needed.

Are you speaking from experience like from the 2013 Summer / Winter Events?
I plan on saving some favors to be sold for next year's summer event when I know selling prices will reset to around 20k EC per favor. As of yesterday prices are around 7.8k EC per favor.

I generally don't go for the very rare stuff. Not gonna bother installing 'em on my ships. I go for the Mk XI and possibly Mk XII stuff that are not excessively expensive. The purpose is to flip them for a profit in the Exchange. For example, I made a pretty good profit back in season 8.5 buying Anti-Proton Beam Array Mk XI weapons at relatively low prices and sell 'em at relatively high prices. On average I made about 35% - 45% profit per weapon depending on the buy and sell price.
The weapons that I have bought and installed in my ships have typically cost me less than than 200k ECs. I am not really focused on DSP so I can simply wait to complete rep systems for better weapons. In fact, all my toons are flying starships that are purposely un-optimized (like no slotted Doff for space / ground bonuses). Nothing on my starships costs more than 200k ECs on the Exchange, many are less than half of that. I am not using any rep gear whatsoever.
I like being challenged when doing elite STFs. I'll get around to maximizing my DPS sooner or later....

As stated in my previous post, the sole purpose for contraband is to be converted to dilithium ore.

No, actually i am not speaking from experience. Im just aplying common sense. After the event nobody will be able to do the events to get favors, so the prices will be higher.
If you only purpose of contraband is convert it to dilithium, you will end anyways with far more contraband that the quantity you can conver to dilithium. That is the ammount of contraband you should sell in the exchange. I tell you this because that is what i do. I know i need at least 15 contraband in every char to do the return contraband assignment (about 3 times in a day), so, every more 5 contraband i get, i stack it, and when i have 10 i sell it to the exchange. OR, i transfer em to my federation toons, to help em with dilithium stacking.

Since this is my 1st "seasonal event" as well, I am going to assume that once the event is over on July 17th people will not be able to use favors anymore. I can see prices rising a bit perhaps towards then end of the event due to the "last chance" effect, but nowhere near what the prices were at the beginning of the event. I am sure someone who has experienced the 2013 Summer / Winter Events can provide clarity.
As for contraband I think I have around 800 in my KDF's inventory even after funneling hundreds of contraband to my other two toons. Not really interested in converting to ECs at the moment. Naturally, once my 2nd KDF toon gets up to speed my contraband accumulation will potentially be doubled. However, that will probably take a solid month of building up that toon to gather the right mix of Doffs to at least be somewhat effective.
In reality, my 2nd KDF toon (4th toon in total) will only be active for about 1 month. I paid for a 1 month subscription to increase my bank and inventory slots for all my toon. In addition, I also wanted the additional Boff slots and the Account Bank. Getting an extra toon slot is just icing on the cake. I figured I will use it because if I don't then when my subscription ends the extra toon slot would be lost unless a toon is currently occupying the slot.
The main focus is to continue to play my Fed and 1st KDF toons full time, while my Rom toon is "semi-active"; every other day. Not sure when I will go back to the 2nd KDF toon. Maybe at the end of this year.
Since this is my 1st "seasonal event" as well, I am going to assume that once the event is over on July 17th people will not be able to use favors anymore.
You will be able to buy favors in the exchange, and you will be able to use em, the only thing that will change after the event is over is:
a) You will not be able to keep doing the events to gather free favors.
b) If you didnt open a project slot in the event reputation, you will not longer be able to acces the event store, so you will need to go to Risa to buy something at the Vendor. I assume the Vendor will still be there.
But, you will be able to keep rising birds if you have eggs / pets or you will be able to buy risa staff if you have favors.
At least that is how i think it works or it should be. The store of the winter event is still there, and if you have resources you can keep buying stuff, like the frosted boots, for example. I assume it will be the same. Now, the winter event map is not there anymore, that is the only thing different, but Risa v been always there, so.

The Solanae space set is also pretty good.
So yeah, check out the gear list and see if anything catches your eye.
