Sounds to me like pretty standard (okay, higher standard) bug movement. Each time you make a pass at your target you turn approximately 90 degree towards your target, then reverse your thrust and turn the other 90 degree, so as to perfectly allign with your target again. Given that the bug has a pretty high base inertia and turn rating these 180s are a lot easier to pull off in that ship. Try it with a risian corvette. It has even better base movement values.
As for the large amount of damage you recieved, i'd speculate, that you were just caught between tactical team cycles. If that happens and the enemy can squeeze in every available buff (omega, mark, alpha, gdf [if you have it], tactical fleet; or a varying amount of them, depending on how experienced your opponent is, as to not overextend himself), then you're pretty much dead.
Your only real chance of surviving that would be to evasive+omega out of the enemies arc or rom-cloak for a moment. Though these are of course only partial solutions.
A good pilote will probably bait you into actually giving him a gdf, so beware you own pressure damage against such a nimble and hard-hitting enemy.

The spike hits were caused semi-consistently by me and hank was having issues figuring out where it actually came from. Everyone was just curious wtf it was.

I'm thinking I'll have to crunch some numbers and figure out the best way to combat the maneuver...
    Chive on and prosper, eh?
