Need Help w/ Risa Floater & Powerboard

To ALL -

I have a few questions on each of the above:

Risa Superior Floater
What I do know: Pressing both mouse key will make it move and pressing space bar will turn on thrusters.
Question: Whne I pres the space bar my Character wants to fo up. I am having a hard time to keep the space bar pressed and move in constant height. I have noticed other Characters that are doing this, have not found any that would help me with the information. What do I do so I can acheive this?

What I do know: Pressing both mouse key will make it move and pressing space bar will jump the Powerboard. In a race I have noticed some with the exact Powerboard overtake me from behind.
Question: Is there a way to make the Powerboard goe even faster?
What are and what do they do, the red floating strips that are in the water?
I have been having trouble with taking my place at the end of the race, even when there is no onee close to me. Is there a way to help me out ot capture my place better than I have been?

I want to Thank Each in advance for all those that have provided useful information to the above.

    Press R (auto run) and use the mouse to steer when you want to stop press S. After that it just takes time learning the course.

    There are speed boosts along the course that make you a bit faster.

    The space bar on the flyer is the vertical thruster so yeah it makes you go up. If you steer the flyer down (using the mouse per wpace2's instructions) while simultaneously using the space bar you do get a little extra forward speed out of it. It's a bit disorienting and hardly seems worth the effort. Assuming you aren't trying to fit in 3 alts in one hunt there is more than enough time to get it done.

    For the floater, I go into shooter mode (press B), and use the W key to fire the thrusters. Much easier to navigate this way as you generally don't have to use the space bar thrusters to climb or descend if you don't want to.

    For the powerboards, while you're doing the race, you can hit the red boards on the course for a speed boost, and also if you time a jump off the ramps at the top of the ramp you will also get another temporary speed boost, usually about 4 to 8 seconds worth.

    I suspect one or possible both of those methods is how someone using the same board overtook you from behind.
