I am using the engine+deflector on a sci dhelan. Full weapons and Aux means very low shields and engine power until the plasmonic leech kicks in. Main reason for getting the engine was to combine with the deflector for the 2pc double buff to defense, since she flies slow all the time. It is noticeable difference. The boost to turn-rate also helps.
Your free to ignore the games harder content if you like... and the fact that ships have defense ratings.
Your right I guess it is my choice to min max... I assumed most people wanted to max things like there amp core bonuses... and defense ratings.
I guess if defense isn't important to you there is no real reason to look at a engine that revolves around defense rating.
Trying to convince others that what you are saying makes a ton of sense though is silly.
Ships have defense ratings... defense ratings are based on speed first. Yes I agree most of the games NPCs are not smart enough, or powerful enough to take out a player shuttle. Having said that if the OP is interested in PvP they will HAVE to move or they will die instantly... if they are interested in doing speed runs of PvE content... or the harder stfs ect... they will NEED to move.
So what I said is still true... basic skill points and things like Leech will have there engine power well over 50 with out really trying... which makes Hyper >.
[Amp] Core is a good reason to keep engines at ca. 50 (and hope to get them boosted enough with your Plasmonic Leech).
Still, the guy was right about you're being too absolute in terms of 'must.' I fly many Escorts, and zipping around has never really made much sense to me, as it's forward momentum you want with that Escort, really. So, *my* playstyle is to keep Engine power at a bare minimum (enough to reach 75 in battle), and just park my Escort right in front of that Planet Killer or Borg Cube. Whilst others may be happy buzzing around it like a freak, that is not necessarily the *only* play-style available and/or viable.
Also, yes, defense value increases with speed; but your overall defense (shield, extra aux for heals, etcs) also increases when you can divert some power from Engines to other systems, like shield or aux.

Diversity, gotta love it!
