Is pvp bootcamp really teaching the skills of pvp or how to click buttons faster?
Quite simple really, just that, I played in some pug games lately and my build granted 1 year old now still holds out.
the problem is the people of today are not playing with maths like the legends, making themselves squishy and to be quite frank clueless about the game.
Squishy you say? Last time I played against you, you had the most deaths on your team and lowest damage with zero heals to any of your teammates. Kettle, meet pot, you both suck.
I think the 2x Tac, 2x Sci, 1x Eng vs. 4x Tac, 1x Sci doohickamabob Devolved linked is something that many folks don't get when they rage about STO being a Tac game.

cant exactly teach experience, those things you mentioned are picked up from that. builds and guides can only help so much, but they are a light in the dark
Btw, we were all set up for that rematch. What happened with that?
Cheers!
Let's do it. Hobo's vs. Pandas. We usually have peeps on at night. If y'all can't play during a weekday evening/night (U.S. timezone) we could set one up for two weekends from now (I can't play this coming weekend). Let me know.
Many people I've given my builds to, and I mean exact build/equipment/spec/doffs/everything, can't duplicate or sometimes even come close to what I'm doing.
Understanding how a build works, how the timing of offense and defense abilities work, and how to pilot that specific ship successfully, is WAY more important than just copy and paste.
Reading "guides" and c/p-ing builds is funny.
Who says that person that wrote the guide or made a build knows what he's doing?
I just like when they call it "master builds"
And also by c/p-ing you never get to figure out why is something there, or can you take it of and try something else.

Yeah, that's why I take advice, but I build my own ship. I've tried other people's builds but they usually just don't feel right or rely on a tactic that I don't use. Also, I think I've learned more about the game from experimenting with powers than from guides. Don't get me wrong, guides helped a lot at first, but after a while I needed to form my own play style.

lol, wrong. is a player more likely to learn the game with a build that will work? or a build that he came up with that wont.
some one succeeding is much more likely to figure out why the build he is using works then someone with a build that fundamentally doesn't work, and has no success with. once a player understands why the build he is using works, he doesn't need help making builds anymore.

"lol, wrong"??
-how can a player that needs to c/p other people's builds even know what is a good build?
-he won't ever figure it out that way, and he will need more advice every step of the way.
I know tons of examples of such behavior.
If you don't want to learn game mechanics, read tooltips, and actually notice in real-time what, why, how and when then no amount of build c/p-ing will help you.
Unless if we are here talking about broken dual a2b faw3 dem3 marion spiral valdore leech "builds" that you can indeed c/p, only thing you need is a spacebar and enough EC.
the point?

your argument is basically that training wheels are a BS way to learn how to ride a bike.
until about season 7, i was maintaining the go to thread for cookie cutter build. i received a ton of feedback about it from people that used it and it worked for them exactly as i described. they had no idea what they were doing, what a functional build looked like, or how any ability interacted and how and when they should be used. they had no way to learn ether if all their experienced was total failure every time.
with a build that works if used right, at least they have a foundation from which they can learn. when they figure out how to make the functional build work, they understand WHY it works, and they don't need to be spoon fed anymore. that's the theory behind that thread, and everyone i talked to that used it told me that's how they learned to play well.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.
Was it an attack on pugs or just the game itself and the state that it is in right now? It's not just PvP where folks are making that kind of complaint...it's both PvE and PvP. The number of folks that play without thinking continues to grow. They copy a build and then proceed to play it wrong - trying to do things they've got no idea how to do or the experience to do. And yeah, that's both in PvP and PvE...
As tedious as it may have seemed to some to answer the same questions over and over from different folks on things - I think it's far worse that the questions simply aren't being asked as much. Threads weren't stickied - the search is still more miss than hit - so yeah, either there's no new players coming in (which doesn't match what's being seen in the game by examples of gameplay from players) or folks just don't care about learning in the least and are just working their spacebars harder and faster while hoping for the best...sometimes not even caring for the best...just mash TRIBBLE faster.

I think you are bored.
And congratulations on "holding your own" against pugs.

Cookie-cutter builds can help set a foundation for learning PvP.
Using one to start, doesn't mean you can't learn about the game at the same time. You can pick it apart and remake it as your own.
LOL seeing this post reminded me of fs on ground pvp
