I've been thinking of recording a little bit. What's a good (free) recording software that does in game sound, and dosent lag your game a lot with an older computer.
I am interested in this as well. Though, I would also need something easy to understand. I am still learning on computers.

I know this is not what you want to here, but fork out the thirty dollars for Fraps. It is well worth it. There are some free recording services out there and I have used many of them. I was not really happy until I used Fraps. That being if you have a nvadia video you can use shadow play? Name might be wrong. Bit it is free for cards that support it. Also Overwolf, I believe it is from the same developers that developed TS3. It gets updates all the time and STO is supposed to be on their list to work with their free recorder.

For SOOOOOO many reasons the money you spend on FRAPS will be the soundest best spent money in your gaming career.
EDIT: Speaking from experience as I've purchased FRAPS and made one or two videos. Windows Movie Maker is a good choice for free software to edit your FRAPS files and it will also handle manipulating your video files in game sound vs any audio you choose to add during edits. Whatever recording software you choose, be sure to set up your file system BEFORE you start recording. Set your recording software to limit the file size. FRAPS has a setting for this. If you DON'T do this you will very likely end up with huge ungainly files that will be nearly impossible to edit.
Cheers and happy recording. Any questions that you think I can help with hit me up on one of my sites, I don't get to the STO forums that often.
The problem is that recording video is CPU intensive and it will cause lag.
Your PC needs to have a CPU with at least 4 cores. Two cores can be set for the game and 2 for the video recording software. The higher you set the video compression (meaning small video file size), the more demanding video recording will be. You may even experience dropped frames.
"Old" is relative since some people would consider a 2 year old PC to be too old for their needs. I would be best if you can list the exact specifications of your PC and PC model number if it is not a custom built PC; meaning you bought something like a Dell PC.
I can't get fraps, and I have an old dell laptop, the one with the blue thing in the middle that they use in schools. Running windows xp.
I mean this in the nicest way possible...
If this is the best way that you can describe your machine in detail, then you probably lack the know-how to use video capture software without a lot of headaches.

Agreed.
If the machine is old enough to still have the early touchpad/joystick mouse control, then it can't run any of the current video capture programs AND Star Trek Online.
Best advice at this point it to either not worry about capturing video while you're playing, or get a new computer, probably something more than a former school machine.

I assume the "blue thing" is an "eraser head" used to control the mouse (made famous by IBM's ThinkPad laptop series).
Since it is running Windows XP, and it has the "blue thing", that suggests a pretty old laptop. To be honest, I am actually surprised you are able to play STO on lit.
Sadly, I have to say that you will simply have to buy a new laptop or better yet, a desktop to record gameplay video. Until that time comes, I think you should simply enjoy playing STO. If you can save up a few hundred dollars, I recommend that you take a look in Dell's online outlet store which basically have a bunch of refurbished or returned laptops. Your best bet is to start looking in November to see if you can get a good deal.
I bought a Dell Latitude 3540 laptop on ebay in early January 2014 for about $500. It is a business laptop with a 1920x1080 resolution screen and a dedicated graphics card (Radeon HD 8850m to be exact). It can play STO pretty well when I am not playing it on my desktop. I later discovered that the exact laptop models were sold on Dell's outlet website for around $350 back in early December 2013. The person I bought it from were selling several Dell 3540 laptops and made a nice little $150 (less shipping) off of each laptop he sold.
Brand new the laptop costs around $900 at the time so paying $500 for a refurbished one in Jan 2014 was not bad. However, it would have been nice to grab it for $350 directly from Dell in December 2013 if I knew about it back then.
I also recommend you familiarize yourself about laptops by just reading laptop reviews so that you can get a general idea about current laptop technology.
Does anyone know if there is a website that will teach you to use Windows Movie Maker? I have a good desktop, and use windows 8.1

What about the /demorecord command is that something the op can use?
In game demo record is wish washy at best. Yes you can record edit and play back but posting to YouTube is different story. Also with each sto update you might lose the capability to watch older recorded video. If you want to know more about this look at either stoked or priority ones pod cast on the subject. The one from stoked is a video.

i kinda figured that i wouldn't be able to, i just thought it would be kinda cool to do it for the Star Trek Battles Channel or something. i DID find a parser however, and thats great.
thanks for the dell place, and thank you to the rest of you.
If you're using Teamspeak you can download the Overwolf add on that includes a video recorder for free. It doesn't have a lot of features but gets the job done, you'll have to do editing with another program.
