Isn't it always fun when some newbie...

...starts spamming the hell out of "Hey all you people who have played this for 2 years or more, I've been at it 2 weeks and I'm here to tell all of you what great stuff this game needs to steal from the suck-TRIBBLE game I just ragequit?"

And double the fun when the newbie here to tell us all what the game needs then starts spewing every dead horse that's been beaten since Beta?

There is always the 0.1% chance that they are right, but each MMO has their own style and what works for one MMO doesn't for another. Personally, STO needs more complex missions that aren't solved through a phaser, decent exploration, and onboard ship missions since that is what the Star Trek series had.

My favorite goes back some years, u used to teleport right infront of admiral quinns office when u beamed to the station, before the teleport pads where installed (your first mission was to find it and talk to him) yet, my first year playing the most asked question around ESD general chat was "wheres admiral quinns office?" (falls over) ...so they changed ESD (the last look) and put the place u teleported to, in another room away from view of his office, then they seemed to find it easier

problem is, a newbie turns often pretty fast into a noob and starts to rage and goes into selfdefence for everything he says.

There are already a few candidates for that out there: Dont troll me, I said dont troll me, I warn you

or the other variant the usual having an excuss for raging: I know I have bad garmin, english is not my language, so dont troll me or I wll report you.

Quite a few things being attributed to the "newbie" are the same things folks that have been around since beta do...

edit: As an aside, heh - how many of the folks sporting Jul/Aug 2012 instead of Jun 2012 dates do you think ended up with Jul/Aug instead because they were on a temporary vacation from the forums at Cryptic's request at the time?

I think its like joining a new school, you dont know who to ask for help, or who is going to jump all over you. Since we arent looking into a real persons eyes, or get to see a personality in facial expression, people can quickly forget they are dealing with another person. This goes for both sides, new people can just as easily join and try to bring up a bad attitude then wonder why everyone is avoiding em or owning em. But you can also have new people run off by getting a bad first impression if trolled when they ask for help.

I think when u first enter into a social game, take the time to talk to and get to know those around u, they may offer u hints and help. But dont be frustrated by people out to make a fool of you. You could very well get a good start and make many friends like I did, in game im polite and often tell jokes to help provide a pleasant atmosphere for those who i game with. My best advice, find someone who wears a star fleet uniform, they are more often helpful then someone who looks like a mad max villain or a street walker.

    Knock yourself out.

They may not be bad ideas per se, but they're still dead horses for some reason- often as not, and another of my favorites, dead because the Devs and management are unified in their stance "We're not doing that, because" but the modern-day gamer can't tolerate being denied their Absolute Right of Whatever *I* Want in *My* Game, Dammit™.

I'm sure there's some "Internet Law of Inverted Complexity" hiding in such situations. Something, perhaps, about nerds being prone to over-think things by so much that sometimes you have to make them more complicated to keep the nerds from trying to figure them out "from a point beyond the actual starting position?"

Of course it's also tied to that online game tendency "Never look around when you can ask someone to paint you a line leading there instead." ;)

Are you seriously suggesting that Cryptic has never said "we're doing X" and then done Y or that they never said "we're not doing X" and then done X?

C'mon...lol...it was one of my favorite old jokes.

Stahl would talk about great things they were planning...that would never happen.
Geko would talk about bad things they were not planning...that would always happen.

But yeah, communication is a bit lacking, idk if its they have so many changes that cant keep up or if they just toss a bunch of fish in the pond and see what they catch. Hmm, now i picture their main office looking like wallstreet during trade hour! :O

Nope. Just dealing with the generic concept of dead horse topics overall...and the people who just can't stop beating them. :D

And then that one time BranFlakes said "Calm down, this is leaked, you haven't heard the whole story yet" and some clown with "hammer" in his name said "Yeah, once we get the whole spiel it'll probably be worse."

...and then the Anniversary was "revamped." :(

Heh, there's too much power - we need to tweak the Eng consoles. Have they looked around recently?

TTL is too low - we need to tweak Tac BOFF Ability stacking. Have they looked around recently?

There's so many examples here and there...of it looking like there's half a dozen left hands and half a dozen right hands with none of the left hands and right hands in agreement.

That's not to say there aren't some serious dead horses out there...I mean, things where folks are just beating little piles of bone dust cause that's all that's left; but there tends to be a very dismissive attitude of things which in the end comes down to being no different than what's being dismissed.

Joe Random: Your idea is just your opinion.
    Random Joe: Like your idea?
    Joe Random: But, but, but...
    Random Joe: /facepalm

Yeah, there are folks that come in and want to change the game into something completely different based on what they like - they don't have to be new though. And besides, without evaluating the potential need for change - you're left with facing stagnation.

Then there's the Canon extremists...and well...

    Joe Random: That violates Canon!
Random Joe: Where's the 2409/2410 Canon that's being violated?
    Joe Random: But, but, but...
    Random Joe: /facepalm

Then there's the tricky rules on necroing threads. Wait, can't talk about that - it's moderation.

Joe Random: You can't discuss moderation.
Random Joe: But what if there's a question or explanation needed to clarify things?
    Joe Random: But, but, but...
    Random Joe: /facepalm

In the end, yes...sadly, the forums can end up being more fun than the game, eh? Meh...

Oh- and not limited to newbies, but seriously- what's with the astounding number of people who combine being long-winded with having no Enter key, or at least no clue that it can be used to break text into digestible paragraphs rather than one monolithic block? Every one of their posts, based on length, looks like a brick (for the short ones) or a concrete block standing up on end.

Often the cretins who do this also run short of spaces, and we all know how vital a working spacebar is to this game. Are these people for real?

The thought has crossed my mind...not that it does anything but add to the annoyance if true. "Sure this gives everyone else headaches, but my fantastic ideas must be posted right! freaking! now! so all you poor crosseyed chumps suck it up."

Nevermind that I can see that for the smaller ones, but can you imagine trying to type the equivalent of 2 pages of newspaper on one of those things? We're not talking inconsiderate posting here, we're talking severe masochism with a sadistic "suffer along with me" component.

I have posted here from my Android at work, during my meal breaks. You can use proper spacing, and grammar. Spell check will sometimes change in game acronyms, and such, to a real word before I submit, sometimes.

I, too, have also noticed a trend in communication between human beings where people get upset that a well-written and thought-out post can't be digested in less than 60 seconds, but they still have the burning desire to post an opinion about it.

I'd prefer comprehensible English ("comprehensible," not "perfect English thesis level," note) in measured paragraphs over people having page-wide by two-page-tall monolithic uncontrolled vowel movements with nary a line break or space in sight, yes.

And now you and urus both get a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat, and 3 free (not to mention desperately needed) visits to Dr. Phil's Clinic for the Subtlety Impaired plus his home training course "How to Stop Missing Those Annoying Points." :D
