I think this particular horse has been beaten dead and smashed into its separate atoms by now....but still it comes back to haunt us!

I like disco balls and party horns etc, so if i feel like messing about i'll setone off and to heck with any RP'ers in the room. If you don't like actualy having to deal with other people doing what they want in an MMO then you are in the wrong game. As long as what people do doesn't actually interfere with players then i have no issues with how people want to act.

You could even macro this, if you know how.

OP I agree 100%. They are simply troll feed. A dozen a times a day some jackwad runs up to the security officer or exchange console I'm standing at blasts a ball and runs away. They are visually annoying but worst of all they give another player the ability to control your character. STO has the ability to turn this off client side so why not give it to us? It certainly didn't take them long to fix Q's dancing.

There is nothing else in this game that has the ability to manipulate other characters like this. It's the reason that trolls run it. People who argue that those that don't want them are impacting their game are either delusional to the disco balls abilities or the very trolls using them. PW needs to either greatly limit where they can be used, increase there cost to something like 100 lobi to stop the spam or what I'd most prefer, give client side control.

If you don't know how to behave in public, perhaps its you who needs to find a different game. Intentionally provoking other players is not nice and demonstrates exactly the kind of behavior people take issue with where it concerns social items.

Before this shambling, undead horse gets too far down the lane... Because experience has taught me in which direction this thread is going...

Let me remind everyone to steer clear of insulting other forum users or otherwise making personal attacks based on their views and opinions. Likewise, flaming the Devs is off-limits here.

Furthermore, it is not necessary to repeat your personal viewpoint over and over again. This can be considered a form of spamming if it does not advance the conversation, and it generally leads to trolling and flaming.

We do not need to endlessly debate the pros and cons of the Party Amplifiers yet again. Please leave your constructive feedback for the Dev team, whether it be positive or negative, and then please move along to another thread.

    ~Bluegeek

    Constructive feedback to the devs:

    1) Remove the Party Ball from the store and make it a temporary seasonal event item for Risa, like the snowballs. That way, people who like them can still have fun without them being shoved in everyone else's faces all the time.
    2) The best way to get rid of these complaints is to allow us the ability to extend permanent fleet holding invitations to other people outside your fleet, so that fleets with open starbases can create social zones of their very own that they can moderate as they see fit.
    3) Please don't ever give the players anything they can spam again, rather it effects my character or not, because it gets old fast.

    -Thank you.

The more people cry about Disco Balls, the more I enjoy using them.

The next greatest troll weapon is the Party Horn.

Yes these are really upsetting, whenever someone sets off a disco ball I just have to run over and join in the dance, one of my Klingon toons is an alien and I have a costume for him that is a little green martian type with big head and antenna and little skinny body and he just looks so stupid dancing, so no, I absolutely can't stand having fun, this must stop. ;)
Honestly, lighten the hell up, if you hate the disco ball that much, switch to another instance. These things don't stop interactions, they don't close open menus, so they are really easy to ignore, the only people being bothered by these things are the ones making a special effort to be bothered by these things.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
    Oh Hell NO to ARC

I know this topic is like beating a dead horse but seriously, enough already!

You're lowballing like a boss. This is beyond dead horse, even beyond dead elephant- we're talking a dead fantasy creature that leaves behind a skeleton that gets made into a city, and it's being beaten remorselessly.
If I want to play a certain way what gives someone else the right to take that away from me.

That sword cuts both ways- explain what gives you the right to take playing with dev-approved in-game devices away from anyone else and then we'll start from there, how 'bout that?

There was a big difference between ice grenades and disco balls.

Disco balls simply cause inactive toons and npc's in the area to dance. If someone doesn't want to be effected they can simply walk/beam away. It also has no effect on any terminals (bank, mail, ect...) and doesn't stop you from continuing on with your business while the disco goes on around you.

The ice grenades however rooted you to the ground, stopping you from moving, and sent you into red alert which stopped you from beaming out and canceled your interactions.

So no, disco balls are not trolling and yes, ice grenades were.

    Done.

    Thanks for the laugh .
    Needed it . :D

Disco balls and all their wretched kin are fine, provided those who enjoy them recognise that not everyone shares their view.

These things can be self regulated, indeed should be.

However, that will change if the ball tossers try to take over every social zone and instance.

Everyone has their fun place to go, but if your idea of fun is making other people unhappy, then at one point you're going to force cryptics hand.

The funniest use of party devices was in Surface Tension. There is an option to use party devices in the celebration on Qo'nos, so I pulled out the explosive party popper...

And spewed tribbles all over the Klingon High Council.

Not only was this a laugh, but it explains why the war's still going on

As far as the balls, who cares really? If the screwed up your abilities to interact with banks/mail etc, or froze you so you could not do anything but dance, that would be one thing. As it is they are harmless.

As far as breaking immersion? If they took out all the immersion breakers in the game now, STO would probably dissolve as if hit by the Tar-Aiym Krang.

I know this topic is like beating a dead horse but seriously, enough already! I has taken me almost a full year to get to this point, but I'm sick and tired of the damn disco ball spamming. I like to play the game in a semi-serious way, by that I mean I wear a canon uniform, I don't jump around on consoles, and I don't spam people with freaking disco balls.
Apparently anytime someone sees a group of people (at the security officer on DS9 for example) it is an open invitation to spam them. I'm all for people having fun in the game, but this needs to be fixed. THE DISCO BALL SHOULD ONLY BE AVAILABLE FOR USE ON RISA AND DROZANA STATION. I'm sure I'm going to get TRIBBLE for bringing up such an old gripe and I'm sure Cryptic isn't going to give two $hit$ about it, but for my own venting I needed to say something.

Agree completely, they should be restricted to Risa or they should be completely deleted from the game. Or just make them so they don't force every avatar into animations.. I guess that would work to.

I'm all for immersion. And ERPing. And any other way any player chooses to experience the game. But to say an aspect of it isn't "canon", and even get annoyed by anything they've decided to apply that premise to... I don't understand.

The Subspace Party Amplifier, to me at least, is something that seems reasonable to assume at least one species might invent in the Star Trek universe. It seems more reasonable to me that people would want to RP/play "around" that piece of technology, rather than have their immersion broken by it. Same with any other item people get trolled by.

Next time someone drops a Subspace Party Amplifier by your feet when you're ERPing, RP the sucker into the session! "My hips are already moving on their own!" or "I think it just got that much harder for you to find my species' genitalia!" would fit pretty well into the situation.

In other words: Don't get trolled when things out of your control happens. Make the best of it.

Social devices don't bother me. And I wish I could share the knowledge of this immunity with my fellow players, but I'm afraid it will be of no help to them. However, just because I'm not affected by such devices and find them to be harmless fun doesn't mean I'll run around like a party animal and force people to do what they don't want to do, despite increasing temptations to do so due to baiting threads such as this. I understand people play the game differently than I do. All I ask is for the same courtesy and civility in return from those sensitive to exposure to these devices. In some cases, people don't intentionally use these devices to troll others. You have no right to berate them and send them offending messages simply because they use these devices seemingly out of the blue.

Try to keep in mind that not everyone is a troll out to ruin your precious gameplay experience.

Personally, I don't really have strong feelings about disco balls either way. I've been annoyed by them; I've also run towards them to participate in the dancing. Depends on my character, and what mood I'm in at the time.

I also play Lord of the Rings Online, and they had a much worse version of this problem. They have a variety of items which affect other players, causing them to cower in fear, burst into flames, and so forth. To make matters worse, there are deeds (their version of accolades) associated with the use of these items, encouraging their excessive use.

Their solution to player complaints was to implement an "opt out" feature called "disable involuntary emotes". I think a feature like that that would solve our disco ball problem.

I've seen these types of threads ever since the first ice grenade came out and they always go the same way so I'm just going to go ahead and close this now.

Cryptic knows there are people that don't like the disco balls, ice grenades and so fourth which is why there are ways to get away from them and they don't actually impede your character from doing things and they also understand those that are frustrated with them. But like a lot have said, it's a game there are ways around them and people have the right to play the game as they want just as those complaining about them.

    Anyways, /closed.
