An Idea - Inspired by Assassins Creed 4

Sometimes I find my old or unused ships in my ship slots looking so bored :P

It's nice to just go back and play them for a bit of fun, but I find there's nothing productive about them once they've reached their 'sell-by' date, so to speak.

2 Months ago i bought Assassins Creed 4 and thoroughly enjoyed the naval battles. Astonishing stuff and so fun!

Then i came across a feature called 'Kenway's Fleet'.

You can steal enemy ships that you board and add them to your fleet, where they can trade cargo for Reales for your privateer needs! It was yet another fun feature of the game.

So it occurred to me, why not make all those ships in Star Trek Online that you have kept in your slot have a purpose when you are not using them!?

Allow them to perform missions in the background much like Doff's - science vessels doing science missions, cruisers doing your cargo and passenger runs, and your escorts ensuring parts of your faction's space are secured.

What would you think about this? What else would you add to this possible system if it were to happen? Would you suggest this to the Dev's?

There has long been a discussion about your unused ships being commanded by your Boffs as part of an Admiral ability - where you can go into some type of Mission with yours and 4 other ships as an armada of sorts.

It will be interesting to see if the new Expansion Pack is a Level Cap increase and that is included.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Same here, though I'm mostly curious to see how they work with stuff like captain powers into it.
I mean, slotting equipment onto those ships wouldn't be too hard, y'know? But there's no way that they'd set it up to slot yet another full set of Bridge Officers onto these NPC ships.
I figure that their powers would probably be dictated by whatever of your BOff's actually gets put in control of the ship in question.

I have to say, I'm less enamoured of the lead-a-fleet idea.

    However, a thought strikes me.

I've been casually idling some time in NWO, and one thing there has struck me as really good.

    The neverwinter gateway thing.

It has a nifty mechanic where your companions can go do simple little flash game missions for minor rewards in the main game.

Now, something like but using your ship roster might be fun.

Rewards can be small amounts od dilithium, even very rarely lobi, that sort of thing.

Thanks for the input on this guys. It's nice to know that this idea has sort of been mentioned before. I'm surprised Cryptic hasn't yet done anything or announced anything for it.

With battles on all fronts and dangers to all three factions, our ships shouldn't be stuck in some drydock until you want to play it again :P

Anyway here's a little more on what the idea came from. Obviously it doesn't have to be as complicated or sophisticated as AC4's fleet management, but you can probably see how some of the features would work.
