Weapon Visuals and Sound FX

timothyre99timothyre99 Member Posts: 366 Arc User
Hello once again everyone. This topic is rather simple. What is your favorite Sound Effect on a weapon, and what is your favorite visual on a weapon? Feel free to also post the inverse. For all I care, you can even post both. It would help if you provide a why, but it is not necessary, seeing how how it can be hard to provide a reason for an art based opinion. I'll start.

Right now, out of the weapon types I have seen, I think phased polaron look the best. However, I don't have much int he way of best Sound effect.

Now on to the worst fx's. I absolutely despise the sound of normal tetryons, whether they are beams or cannons, or even ground weapons. My least favorite visual so far is disrupters, particularly nanite due to the disappointment in thinking they will be darker than usual and then them not being darker. This dislike is due to the light, Limey green color. I like warm colors, and I like green, but for some reason, I despise warm greens, and the disrupters are just that.

IMO, probably the only weapons that sound right are photons and quantums (unless you believe they should sound like quad cannons :P). Everything else seems a bit off.

Phasers sound too stiff and dull. They should sound more like this or this.

Disruptor beams usually sound similar to phasers. Disruptor bolts should sound more like this. You can hear Dominion Polarons, Romulan Disruptors and Torpedoes, and Cardassian "Spiral Wave" Disruptors in the same clip, not to mention Quantum Torpedoes and Phaser Quad Cannons sharing the same sound effect... :P

Andorian Phaser weapons also have a unique sound seen on Enterprise. Heard from pretty much any battle involving an Andorian Battlecruiser.

Consistency isn't Star Trek's strong-suite, so everything always sounds different throughout every series.

Well in this particular movie the Enterprise-E for some odd reason has a differing sound, than before from First Contact so go figure when it comes to sound effects consistency.

Who IS Cryptic's sound dev, btw? I don't think we've ever heard from them...at all. :P

I did say you could discuss visuals as well, not just sound.

I love the look of the Chroniton Dual Beam Bank (though the sound gets on your nerves as it can be heard from a hundred miles away).

I love the Transphasic Torp sound effects, really nice (esp on a spread)

I never get bored of Polaron beam array look and sound.

What needs to be addressed by devs, in my opinion, are the sound effects for anything Antiproton. It makes such a racket that I have avoided using them at all costs. Grating, teeth on edge whining sound that drowns out everything else.

    .

I hate it. Specially since it is not the original sound effect. I love the original one, not the one that you can hear in the game.

I love the sound of the tetryon cannons. I just love it. Lol, too bad they are useless, sigh.

I kinda hope they will make better sounds, they all sound alike to me in essence.

    They are all equally irritating.
Its mostly because they are used so often, hence why 9 out of 10 times i simply mute the sound or listen to spotify or whatnot.

So far the best sounding energy weapon I like, is the new destabilizing tetryons.

Don't get me wrong I like or can live with some of the others, but the top listed is so far the best sounding to me.

I think I am referring to the original sound effect. I haven't used transphasics in a long time but remember loving how they sounded. Might as well fit one and check :)

It's nice hearing all of your opinions. :) they all do kind of sound alike, but I just hate the normal tetryons more for some reason. I think it is because they are supposed to be weapons yet sound so wimpy. Eh, I really don't know though.

Does this include ground/personal weapons too? If so, I would say that my favorite visual would be Phaser weapons because they look very high-tech and favorite sound fx would be plasma because it has a deep, low-pitch sound. Repeater pistols also have a really cool firing sound in my opinion.

My most hated graphics is Plasma Ground weapons. 1950 Sci-Fi Ray Guns feel so out of place among the other weapon models.

For sounds, I hate the Quad Phaser Cannons. They sound like a tiny pew gun compared to how they sounded in DS9 and First Contact.

Tetryon space beams, iirc, sound similar to Tolian Soran's disruptor weapon from Generations. I kinda like it.

I'm glad you point this out and provide examples of how phasers SHOULD sound. This has been something that's always bugged me about the phasers in game.

That is because the quad phaser cannons are Cryptic invention. The original weapons mounted in the Defiant we all saw in DS9 were "pulse phasers". Not phaser cannons. And i never saw cannons in the star trek universe btw. Not that i remember. So, since cryptic needed cannons on STO, they just included the pulse phasers of the Defiant in the same category.

And i agree, the original sound of the pulse phasers is really beautiful, the opposite to the actual quad phaser cannons in STO lol.

I doubt Cryptic even has a dedicated sound dev.

I think we should see more retro-looking ground weapons, early to mid 20th century and 80's to early 90's.

For sound, I imagine using either something like the Slayers laser spears from Krull, or the ones from Sadors ships from Battle beyond the stars, since the latter did sound more like lasers.
