If you have a halfway decent group, you will just sit in the middle of the map doing nothing, because all the BOPs and raptors have been blown up seconds after they have spawned. It's no wonder people question your contribution to the team effort. In general it's always a bad idea to position yourself on a spot where you cannot contribute until it's almost too late.

When I first started playing STO (over two years ago), I remember the rally cry on "The Cure Found" invariably was "Engies on Kang!" and it was very common to see 1 or 2 engineers on Kang directly while the rest of the team took out the clusters one by one.

My, my, how times have changed!

Sure, my fleet likes that I've built an amazing heal boat to hover over Kang and keep him healthy, and I occasionally get some compliments from the general public, and I know it's impossible to please 100% of the people 100% of the time, but HOLY MOTHER CRAPOLA! Do I really have to be accused of being "AFK" when I'm producing (at bare minimum) a steady stream of Extend Shields onto Kang? and often offering to help anyone in need?

I know why people hate AFK'ers -- they take up a needed slot and produce nothing in return. But how does this apply -- HOWEVER you look at it -- to Kang? 1) I'm sitting right in the middle of the enemy's attack zome! An AFK'er under these circumstances is risking obvious death, so why would a PLAYER make such a move (as opposed to moving off to the side, somewhere safe). 2) Yes, I've played a few maps where the cube destruction is so fast that Kang never gets attacked, but these are rarities. More often than not I'm in a game where Kang gets swarmed at least once, and NEEDED me (or any healer) to be there.

So seriously, people -- what gives? On the one extreme, I'm getting some high praise for my tanking abilites, but on the other, I'm being told I'm nothing but a leech and some have gone so far as to threaten "reporting" me. All feedback is appreciated.

    COLOR ME BEWILDERED!

The best way is and was always killing everything before it can reach the kang. I play since F2P-Start and even at that time even a decently build escort could do that (especially when taking the raptors from behind).

I dont like ppl standing at the kang in stf with me, simply because normally I am the one killing every spawn and cube between spawns (when pugging). So a babysitter is not needed, which should be clear after the first raptor spawn, so everyone still standing at kang gets a small notification, thats its not needed and offensive help would be nice.

"If you need to heal the kang, you are doing something wrong" is a simple rule for cure, since dps requirements are so low (<5k without GW), some pets could do that^^

I drive an Oddy that is no way min-maxed to death and I can kill Borg pretty well and take out a cube eventually. ;) But some of the people out there can wipe out CSE in like 5 minutes.

Babysitting the Kang was ALWAYS a waste of resources, not nil since power creep.
    That's pretty much it.

Even in old times it was better to intercept the spawns before they got into firing range.

Yeah, back in the old days I'd always hang out half way between kang and two sides and EWP one while taking out the other then come back and finish off.
Sitting there "doing nothing" next to Kang was always a waste of time.
If you're healing, sure, good stuff. But when healing isn't required, it's DPS down the tube.

As for heal boats in current PvE content... my heal boat achieved 1st place in CCE multiple times when I tried it. And does well in the queued fleet event where you save the transports.
They have their place, but these days it's kind of pointless most of the time, unfortunately. This game has been "DPS: Online" for a good while.
