...to tell the guy/gal or group of folks that killed, "GF" - "Well played." - etc, etc, etc?

Or is there always some excuse that you have to offer for why you were defeated?

Oh, don't get me wrong - there are plenty of excuses...oodles of excuses - but uh, it's usually because you did or did not do something, right? So uh...in making those excuses...you're just admitting that you were at fault for something. So uh...basically you got outplayed, right?

So why not just offer that "GF" - "Well played." - etc, etc, etc and think about what you did or didn't do and do or don't do it differently next time, right?

Almost every kill in STO is a team effort. The winner did their part. The loser did their part.

Congratulate the winner for their part, don't blame them for your part...

...just saying.

edit: Removed "GG", because the post was about deaths - not matches...and well, yeah, although there may be similarities in the excuses - the intent of the post was in regard to deaths not matches.

Theres nothing you "have to" .This is bs to make someone say gg of fu or any other acronym if that person is not meaning that. Each and every person says whatever they want not some unwritten rule.

whats next? grind pve and say at the end "what an awesome pvp" ?

if they think it was gg they say gg if they don't they wont say it.

how about make zone chat unavailable in arena?

I say "thanks for playing", most of the time.

But I'm a little afraid to say anything if my side won.

Neither, really. I am more curious about how it was done than on pithy platitudes. I don't really say that sort of thing win or lose. If I win, I pick apart what you did wrong. If I lose, I ask you to pick apart what I did wrong. Anything else doesn't really serve a purpose.

I typically dont say anything at the end of a match. Typically.

But at the start of the match on some toons i might say something meant to be funny

My avenger is quite adept at screaming LEEEROYYYY JENKINNNS and then full impulsing straight to their spawn by itself (actually intentional, they pop all their stuff on me, i hopefully survive it, and then my teammates come in behind me and wipe them out)

But about the only time I ever say anything is when someone snarks off at us. I find silence is usually best, especially if the match was one sided/pugstomp.

I will however always thank the guy that stays when all of his teammates warped out on him.

I wont GG anyone unless it was actually a GG.

If my team stomps the other team 15 to 0 i wont say a word and likewise if our team was done in the same way.

If the game was not enjoyable or in anyway "good" i wont say a word. Saying so when a game was obviously not is just patronizing.

Simply typing it for every single match regardless of if you made it enjoyable for your opponents and them for yourself just devalues the entire gesture.

I usually say good game myself after PvP matches; even if we defeated our opponents 15-0 or we got defeated 0-15.

Simply being that team tried its hardest in the match; and usually a 15-0 score may not say how difficult or unlucky each side was; as score lines can be depective.

    My opinion of course.

    It's curious...reading the replies...reading my OP...reading the replies.

As in a death...not in a loss of a match...

Can see where one might take that as being defeated in a match...but it follows the killed...
Almost every kill in STO is a team effort. The winner did their part. The loser did their part.

Didn't want to say the killer and killee...so it was the person that won that particular fight and lost that particular fight, still just about the single death.

It's not about saying GG at the end of a match...it's about not making excuses about why you died.

It's always been a trip seeing folks say...

    "I didn't do this..."
    "I should have done that..."
    "I forgot to equip this..."
"I'm running this gear and should have been running that gear..."
"I was flying alone knowing that the enemy was in a group..."
    Etc, etc, etc...

Basically, all they do is complain at the other guy - as if it were the other guy's fault...for stuff they themselves did or didn't do...

I don't think I actually have the time to congratulate everyone that kills me. Can I just give a blanket congrats here?

Heh, I rarely say anything when somebody kills me. I'm usually looking at why I died, off smoking, or charging back in blindly with rage to get revenge even though that just means I'm more likely to die again...

...the gist of the thread, though - was basically "Do you have what it takes not to make excuses for why you got blown up...or...do you always have to make an excuse for why the other guy killed you?"

Well....thinking in terms of an arena, there's hardly any time at all to say anything after a kill. So talking about 'GG' and all....you kinda get the assumption that it's after the match as a whole.

Heh, those things you mention - I don't type them in chat, but it's what I'm telling myself. At least so I don't do the same thing next time.

Which I think is a trip, in thinking about it. Cause the folks that don't say it out loud - don't type it out loud, lol - are usually going to think about it and try to fix it...while the folks that type it out and complain...a day or so later, they're making the same excuses. It's like they didn't listen to what they typed...er...didn't read what they typed.

    " i will punish you "

    " I'm the Devil of Darkness "

    later..

    " Hey Dude.. dont shoot @ me ! "

" Dammit.. you killed me again.. why ? "

    " Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "

@ the End of the Match..

" gg but I'm still the best of the best "

" gf but i have some laggs here.. "

" You only have luck that i played with one hand ^^ "

Normally, I'm the guy that acts as cannon fodder (of course, which means as the opposing force is concentrating on ME, the experienced pvpers on my team are going on the offensive).

As the apparently designated red-shirt on my pug team, I am used to dying, often in a large and bright blossom of explosions.

Do I get angry? No. It's been said over and over, we all die. No reason to get angry.

So, having said that, I typically do throw a "gg" at the end of the match, while I am thinking on what I could/should have done differently. When I venture to Ker'rat, I'll even give a "gf, nice job, etc" to the Klink that successfully ganks me. No hard feelings.

About the only time I get snarky is when loosing 0-15, with a massive amount of cheese from a fleet-made or partial fleet-made. Even then, I'll just say "thanks for the spanks" and let it go.

All those so-called negative remarks/e-peening/l2p stuff - I only see that happening in the opvp channel, I've never seen it come up during or after a match.

I usually say "thanks for the match :) " or if it was a good game I'll say "GG was fun :) "

Sometimes I'll pm someone who killed me in an awesome way and say something like " nice kill :) ".

If someone is spamming consoles or other junk I usually wont say anything because they are usually:

    A) trolling, in which case, sending a tell or talking in zone will only feed their disability, or

    B) They feel it's the "only way to get a kill" or "it's ok to use because it works" or "it's in the game so it's fair play."

either case there's no point in talking to them.
