I have run the new mirror event like a thousand times lol.. 12 character completed it.. uggg.. im not even gonna get into grind in this post hahaha.. but, I am using at my point of reference. I find a lot of "newer" content suffers from some of the same problems.
however, there was ups and downs to the event. the ups were, cryptic is finally attempting (failing, but attempting and adversity breads innovation) to make the three classes have nitches in each mission.
and it does look nice.. and voice over work is always nice..
however, it is not very well thought out.. there is a general story line to the game, and there is content that leads up to where we are now.. the last time we dealt with the mirror universe, it was in the ce event, where supposably they are trying to help, and if you leave them alone, they will target enemies before you, and blah blah blah..
then, without any story background, were suddenly being raided by them, and for some strange reason, (again, no background or story) they are raiding a romulan outpost.. and not just raiding it, but throwing away hundreds of ships, and even after we repell them, they still give it the last college try.. we never figure out why they are there, and what is on the station that they want.
now, this is the problem, there is absolutely no story content with this mass murder, shoot first, ask questions later, zerg. at least at the beginning of the c/e event has about twenty minutes worth of reading, not just telling you how to defeat it, but explaining that the mirror universe is showing up , and why the tholians are there. to be fair, its not the most compelling writing in the world, but it gives you the reasons your there, and what your trying to accomplish.
with the m/u event, you just show up, they explain how to kill things, but not why your killing the things, or more importantly, why those things are trying to kill you.
and even worse, the dreadnaught comes out, and before it even uses its ability, the romulans have psychically figured out that it can make its own rifts.. appearently romulans tech. is so good, they can predict stuff that is gonna happen.
this is the problem with a lot of content in the game in my opinion. a lot of it is just stuck in the game with no real story or thought. honestly, it gives you no background on what, where, why, when, and how. your just told to do it cause its in the game and its the only thing to do. lol.
the people you see asking for better story content, are not just asking for new stories, but asking for the story to be told better. this is star trek, we are star trek fans, we deserve a higher caliber of story telling and story execution.
other content that suffers from this, is most of the fleet based instances. the no win scenario (why am I, a captain/admiral [however you view yourself in the game lol] taking a 3rd year cadet coarse). im not saying I shouldn't, I understand cause its fun. but in the flow of the game, why am I.
a lot of the voth missions suffer from this as well. for some reason, cryptic decided to hide the story in little easter eggs you stumble across. which, the direct story should never be hidden. it should be the fore front of everything your doing.. easter eggs are meant to be finding out something about someone that makes you understand their decision better or what not.
for three years now, we have been told that the iconians are responsible for everything.. well... is it gonna be another 3 years before they finally tell the story lol... successful games don't create super long story arcs.. they use the short story method and use all the short stories to build the world and future story arcs off of. most of sto's story arcs are the same thing, just different race, and they all keep telling us of a story about the iconians that seems to have no end in sight..
on nimbus, there is a lot of great story, but there is a lot of just do it scenarios that don't explain why.. consistency is key, and in a video game that is telling a story, I need to be told why im doing certain things.. im hoping that in the future, story telling will be as good as some of the other assets they have been improving.
