This may sound like a foolish question, but what are the basic concepts behind stacking multiple instances of the same console? I am assuming that stacking multiple copies of the same console on the same ship leads to diminishing returns. I have three of the Dyson tactical consoles that boost critical hit chance percentage, and they are tuned to antiproton (all of my beam arrays are antiproton). Would a fourth tactical console like that be worth anything? And if not, could I use a different but similar console and get full results? I know that there is ALSO a Dyson antiproton tactical console that buffs critical -damage- instead of chance, and I'm wondering if it would contribute the full range of its' benefits due to the fact that it is a completely different console.
Tac consoles just keep adding, it should be noted that the % damage is of the base damage, to see what you're getting be within a system, eg park outside DS9, then swap out a console and look at the weapon damage from the tooltip, also for consoles that have critH or CritD look at attack on the ship status page.
Most standard consoles stack: armour, science, tactical etc. The universal consoles, mostly from rep system or cstore ships are limited to one of a particular type per ship at any one time - you can't fit 4 copies of plasmonic leech and get +60 power levels.
Consoles and deflectors etc that contain the same characteristic like extra shield power or additional points in a skill just add up, so skills can well exceed the 99 point limit within the skill system.

So in reality there's no reason why I cannot and should not use four of the same console. That's remarkable. Thank you for the help.

Most of the consoles iirc have some kind of diminishing returns, but not tac consoles. Stack those as high as you like.
As a rule, I tend not to stack more than 2 of a console type when it's a sci or an eng console.
I may have completely misremembered this though, so don't quote me.
Most consoles, directly, do "linearly stack". 4 Defense boosting consoles provides 4x the increase to defense stat X. 4 + damage consoles gives 4x the damage boost.
However, many formulas (especially defense and skill-effect) are ultimately "scaling" skills - where the increase is greater at lesser values than higher ones - going from +10 defense to +20 "affects" you more than going from, say, +90 to +100. These are the ones commonly called "diminishing return" consoles...
Note - this is very glossed over. High level concept only...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I stack all four tactical slots on my fleet excelsior with 30% Antiproton Mag Regulators and it is great to see how they perform. When my fleet gets to tier three in the spire I am looking forward to getting the ones that have 31.9%. Hell yeah

Well, actually, you shouldn't because it'll be one less console slot available to you for something else.
But conventional wisdom states you should :P
